The collection also documents the theatrical career of Wick's wife, Dodee Wick (Hilda Eckstrom) through photographs, scripts, reviews, playbills, and professional and personal correspondence.

Wickenden, Elizabeth, 1909-2001	Title: Elizabeth Wickenden Papers, 1885-2001 (bulk 1932-1989) Quantity: 15.4 c.f. (15 record center cartons and 1 archives box), 1 tape recording, and 5 photographs (1 folder); plus additions of 3.7 c.f. and photographs Call Number: Mss 800; M99-098; M2001-090; M2001-165; M2005-100 Abstract: Professional papers, mainly 1932 to 1989, of Elizabeth Wickenden, a social welfare and Social Security policy consultant, analyst, and writer, and professor of public policy and urban studies. The papers document her professional positions as well as her activities as a consultant to national social welfare organizations, and her leading role in the Study Group on Social Security and the Save Our Security coalition. Also reflected are her activities as Professor of Urban Studies at the City University of New York (1966-1974) and at Fordham University (1979-1983). Issues with which she was concerned include transiency, poverty, welfare reform, welfare rights, welfare law, child protection and child welfare, Social Security and Medicare legislation, national health insurance, and unemployment compensation. There is also a small quantity of personal records and photographs, including school papers and four diaries from the 1920s and 1930s.

(24 volumes in 3 record center cartons) Call Number: Eau Claire Mss BA Abstract: Printed Wisconsin Supreme Court cases and legal briefs prepared by the Eau Claire, Wisconsin law firm of Wickham and Farr, and by opposing attorneys. The cases span the dates of James Wickham's law practice from 1888 until 1909, when he was appointed circuit court judge for Wisconsin's newly-created 19th circuit. In 1889 Wickham was joined in practice by Frank R. Farr. Wickham and Farr undertook cases from all of the counties surrounding Eau Claire. The cases represented in the collection are comprised of appeals of all types to the Wisconsin Supreme Court with two to the U.S. Supreme Court, a few to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit, and one each to the Minnesota and Illinois Supreme Courts.

While most of the images in the collection are undated, the majority of the images appear to document life in Milwaukee in the 1940s, particularly on the city's south side.

Wilcox, Roy P., 1873-1946	Title: Roy P. Wilcox Papers, 1890-1925 Quantity: 3.0 c.f. (8 archives boxes) Call Number: Eau Claire Mss AV Abstract: Papers of Roy P. Wilcox, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, attorney, Republican state senator from 1917 to 1920, and unsuccessful primary candidate for governor in 1918 and 1920 and for senator in 1925. The papers consist of materials from his political campaigns and his State Senate term, speeches, and a small subject file concerning the city commission form of government and workmen's compensation legislation. The political materials include lists of supporters, campaign literature, a few financial reports, and materials from the Guardians of Liberty. The 1925 correspondence is especially revealing of the daily inside operations of the campaign and of relationships with party leaders in Wilcox' race against Robert M. La Follette, Jr., for the senior La Follette's vacant Senate seat.

The collection documents the group's efforts to preserve the natural environment of Hudson and the area near the Wisconsin-Minnesota border.
Wild, Robert, 1875-1928	Title: Robert Wild Family Papers, 1825-1937 Quantity: 2.4 c.f. (10 archives boxes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss CJ Abstract: Papers of Wild, a Milwaukee attorney who was vice-president of the State Board of Bar Examiners and regent of the University of Wisconsin, accompanied by records of other members of his family. The collection consists essentially of papers of a German immigrant family that transplanted traditions and customs of the homeland to a new environment. The collection includes financial records of the Milwaukee West Seite Hoch Schule, 1871-1877; minutes of meetings of the Deutsche Gesellschaft von Milwaukee, 1880-1917; programs of German social and cultural activities; papers, 1846-1879, of Dr. Francis Huebschmann; and papers, 1844-1894, of Franz Anton Mohr, a family friend. Robert Wild's papers include letters from members of the legal profession in the state, from regents and faculty members of the University, particularly from the Department of German, and from leaders in German universities and institutes whom he met on a trip abroad in 1927; and also his articles and addresses on historical and literary subjects and on political measures he opposed, such as Prohibition and woman suffrage. The collection contains a diary, 1921, and some letters of Robert Wild's brother, George B. Wild. The latter, at one time business manager of the Toledo (Ohio) Baseball Club, corresponded with the club's patron, Noah Swayne, after 1915. There are also papers, 1825-1883, of Swayne's father, Noah Haynes Swayne, a United States Supreme Court justice, and his brother, General Wager Swayne.
Wilde, Harold R., 1911-1962	Title: Harold R. Wilde Papers, 1925-1959 Quantity: 0.4 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss CR Abstract: Brief papers of Wilde, a Milwaukee businessman and secretary to Wisconsin Senator Alexander Wiley. Most of the correspondence concerns personal matters, although there are two letters from Wiley and one to Wiley discussing the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. As a civic leader, Wilde was often asked to give speeches, and many copies exist in the collection. Also present are financial reports (1947-1950) of the Norcor Manufacturing Company, of which Wilde was vice-president.
Wileden, Arthur F.	Title: Arthur F. Wileden: Rural Community Analysis, South Central Wisconsin, 1949-1966 Extent: 4.0 c.f. (10 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 80 Abstract: Papers of Arthur Wileden, a nationally prominent University of Wisconsin professor of rural sociology, consisting primarily of reports on studies of 17 rural southwestern Wisconsin communities. The reports were produced by students in Wileden's community development course which focused on one community each year. They document the history, ethnicity, religion, education, business, industry, agriculture, government, and recreation for the Wisconsin cities of Belleville, Cambridge, Dodgeville, Edgerton, Evansville, Jefferson, Lake Mills, Lodi, Mineral Point, Mt. Horeb, Poynette, Prairie du Sac, Randolph, Rio, Stoughton, Sun Prairie, and Waterloo.
Wileden, Arthur F.	Title: Oral History Interview with Arthur F. Wileden, 1975 Quantity: 11 tape recordings Call Number: Tape 553A Abstract: Tape-recorded interviews conducted by Dale Treleven of the Wisconsin Historical Society staff with rural sociologist Arthur Wileden; concerning his youth and early teaching experiences in Waukesha County, Wis., his World War I disillusionment, his career at the University of Wisconsin and work on such projects as community leadership conferences and rural community development, rural civil defense during World War II, the development of French Island near La Crosse, the growth of several farm organizations, and the personalities and effectiveness of rural leaders he has known.

Included is incoming and outgoing constituent correspondence which constitutes the vast bulk of the collection; correspondence with family, friends, government agencies, and prominent individuals; files on legislation sponsored by Wiley and on his work in the Foreign Relations Committee and on the Judiciary Committee, especially that relating to anti-trust legislation and the Bricker Amendment; extensive microfilmed biographical clippings; and a very complete record of Wiley's speeches, news releases, and other writings. Well documented in the collection are Wiley's support of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, the Chicago-Lake Michigan Water Diversion case, his advocacy of the Wisconsin dairy industry, his strong anti-communist beliefs and activities, and the censure of Joseph McCarthy by the Senate.
Wiley, George A., 1931-1973	Title: George Wiley Papers, 1949-1975 Quantity: 17.2 c.f. (44 archives boxes) and 28 tape recordings Call Number: Mss 324; Tape 544A Abstract: Papers of George Wiley, a founder and executive director of the National Welfare Rights Organization, documenting both his public and private lives, and his civil rights and anti-poverty activities. While teaching chemistry at Syracuse University, Wiley helped found the local chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality; later he served on CORE's National Action Council, and was associate national director of CORE, 1965-1966. Wiley's records on the National Welfare Rights Organization (1967-1973) form the majority of the collection.

Included are incomplete files of correspondence, mainly concerning legislative matters; bills and proposed legislation; materials collected for legislative reference; a few files related to his career as school superintendent and education in general; personal diaries; and school notebooks of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley.
Wiley, Guilford M., 1880-1955	Title: Guilford M. Wiley Papers Physical Description: 0.6 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 084 Abstract: Guilford M. Wiley served as the principal of La Crosse Central High School from 1921-1926 and as the La Crosse Superintendent of Schools from 1926-1942. Wiley later became involved in politics and served from 1946-1950 in the Wisconsin State Legislature as Republican member of the Assembly from Trempealeau County. In 1952, he was an unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor. Wiley passed away in 1955. Materials in the collection include correspondence (1931-1933; 1945-1954), scattered issues of the La Crosse Central High Tribune (1922; 1928), miscellaneous materials (ca. 1938-1954), materials from the National Council of Presbyterian Men (1943-1954), newspaper clippings arranged by topic (1939-1954), materials from Wiley's political career (1949-1954), twenty photographic postcards depicting the evangelist Reverend Billy Sunday (ca. 1908), and a newspaper clipping scrapbook (1938-1939) containing articles pertaining to the La Crosse public schools.

(1 archives box), 4 tape recordings, photographs, 1 videotape, and 1 data file Call Number: Mss 847; Tape 1282A; PH Mss 847; VHA 278 Abstract: Papers, mainly 1985-1987, of Wiley, a speaker, writer, and activist from Erie, Pennsylvania, who founded Prolifers for Survival (1979-1987) as a bridge between pro-life and anti-nuclear groups. She also organized “We Will Stand Up,” a campaign to promote abortion-free cities for the 1987 papal visit to the U.S., and was a founding lay member of the Pax Center, a Benedictine community for peace and justice. The papers document her evolving stance on the pro-life issue and include her views on peace and disarmament, feminism, and her ties to the Catholic Church. The bulk of the collection consists of her published articles, correspondence and “We Will Stand Up” campaign materials and photographs, but also includes materials on Prolifers for Survival and other pro-life groups, a videotaped television interview, a tape-recorded speech, and a 1994 oral history interview.

Early career files include extensive material from his tenure (1945-1950) as chairman of the Madison Housing Authority as well as information on his two unsuccessful congressional campaigns. Legislative files contain material on issues considered during the 1957, 1959, and 1961 legislative sessions, especially the 1961 sales tax compromise. Judicial files, which document his general professional concerns and involvements rather than specific decisions and rulings, contain extensive material on the state court reorganization efforts of the 1970s in which Wilkie was an active participant.

(2 archives boxes) and 32 photographs Call Number: Stevens Point Mss BX; PH 6529 Abstract: Papers of the Williams families of Waupaca County (Wisconsin) consisting of diaries and account books (1870-1919), including transcriptions of the diaries compiled by Don and Betty Hansen. Harry Williams was the first white child born in Bear Creek (Wisconsin) and the diaries of Harry, his wife Laura (née Wolcott), and his father Lucien document weather, chores, and observations regarding family members and neighbors. The account books are largely addenda added to the diaries in the final pages. The photographs include images of multiple generations of the Williams family, as well as images of the house and outbuildings.

Williams, Eleazer, 1787-1858	Title: Eleazer Williams Papers, 1634-1964 Quantity: 4.4 c.f. (11 archives boxes) and 7 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 76; Green Bay Micro 19; Micro 844 Abstract: Papers of Williams, an Episcopal missionary to the Oneida Indians in New York and Green Bay, Wisconsin, who was of mixed English, French, and Indian lineage and claimed to be the “lost dauphin” of France. Williams, who lived in or near Green Bay from 1822 until 1850, was instrumental in encouraging some members of the Oneida and Stockbridge Indian tribes to immigrate to Wisconsin during the 1820s. The papers consist of materials by Williams including correspondence, 1801-1856, which pertains to his efforts to secure land for the New York Indians; his connections with land companies and French fur traders; his relationship with church and government officials; his repudiation by the Oneida Indians in 1832; and the “lost dauphin” controversy. Other materials written by Williams include autobiographies covering his life to about 1833; notes about Great Lakes geography and early exploration, fur trade, and missionary activities among the Indians, especially the Six Iroquois Nations; journals and journal fragments; sermons and notes; and a few speeches. Materials about Williams include a scrapbook, clippings, pamphlets, a small amount of correspondence to Lyman Draper from acquaintances of Williams, and an article about Williams by Albert G. Ellis. Materials in the collection collected by Williams include journals, narratives, and sermons of several of Williams' ancestors; two diaries of Mrs. Williams, 1834-1839 and 1858-1878; journals of two acquaintances, Albert G. Ellis and John Sargeant; dictionaries and documents in an Indian language, presumably Mohawk or Iroquois; fur trade accounts of Grignon, Lawe, and Porlier, 1818-1832; and almanacs, pamphlets, and books from Williams' library.

Williams with 29 residents of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and vicinity about the history of the area; plus one interview, 1981, conducted by Dale Treleven of the Wisconsin Historical Society staff with Williams concerning his family and youth in Waushara County, the effects of World War II, his moving to Prairie du Chien, and his interest in local history. Also included are papers documenting the Williams family, photographs related to the Prairie du Chien area, and an extensive Wisconsin postcard collection.

Williams Interview, 1978 Quantity: 3 tape recordings Call Number: Tape 721A Abstract: One of a series of tape-recorded oral interviews conducted with Textile Workers Union of America leaders by James A. Cavanaugh of the Historical Society staff, documenting the origins, growth, and decline of the TWUA, internal disputes, relations with other unions, and organizing drives. The interviews document textile unionism prior to the formation of the TWUA, as well as discussing major strikes and gains made through collective bargaining. Specific references are made to organizing activities in Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The Herbert S. Williams interview is part of the Textile Workers Union of America Oral History Project.

(4 archives boxes) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 165 Abstract: Collected papers of Letha Williams documenting her interest in the history of Marinette County, Wisconsin and the town of Marinette's “twin city,” Menominee, Michigan. The papers consist of newspaper clippings, oral histories, and genealogical information about area families collected by Williams for a proposed book on the history of the area. The bulk of her research was concentrated in the following areas: local genealogies, community histories of local towns and Marinette county generally, indigenous Native American groups, and the primary and secondary school systems in the area.
Williams, Warren Lorenzo	Title: Warren Lorenzo Williams Letters, 1864-1865 Quantity: .1 cubic ft. (2 folders) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 82 Abstract: Collection contains letters written by Warren Williams, a member of Company E, 5th Wisconsin Infantry (Reorganized) from September 3, 1864 to his mustering out on June 19, 1865. The letters date from September 11, 1864 to June 6, 1865 and are to his wife and family. In the letters Williams describes life as a soldier, including his muster into service in Wisconsin and being transported to various locales throughout the country. The majority of the contents deal with how much Williams would like to be able to go home and be with his family. According to the Roster Wisconsin Volunteers, Williams was from Vinland, Wisconsin.

Also included are a school copybook, a ciphering book, and a teacher's certificate for Williamson.

(25 boxes; 381 oversize folders; 177 rolls) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 223 Abstract: Specializing in single-family residences, the firm of Willis and Lillian Leenhouts Architects was well-known for its regional modernist style and utilization of passive solar technologies. The collection includes project records of the firm (both files and drawings), as well as Willis and Lillian Leenhouts's professional papers. The project records are the most extensive portion of the collection and pertain to over 500 built and unbuilt projects from 1936 to 1990. Of the projects represented in this collection, the vast majority are single- or multi-family residences in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area.
Willkie-For-President Committee. Wisconsin	Title: Willkie-for-President Committee. Wisconsin: Records, 1943-1945 Quantity: 0.4 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: Wis Mss RW Abstract: Papers relating to the Wisconsin Wilkie-for-President Committee's effort to nominate Wendell Willkie as a presidential candidate on the Republican ticket. Included is correspondence and financial data (kept by Willard Smith, secretary of the committee), speeches, press releases, and clippings. Correspondence is mostly between the Milwaukee headquarters, Smith, and committee workers throughout the state.
Willkom, Terry A., 1943-	Title: Terry A. Willkom Papers, 1971-1974 Quantity: 1.0 c.f. (5 archives boxes) Call Number: Eau Claire Mss AL Abstract: Legislative papers of Willkom, Chippewa Falls, Wis., Democratic representative of Wisconsin's 67th Assembly district (1970-1976). The collection contains primarily reference materials, with some correspondence, and reflects Willkom's special interests in health care and hospitals, and in the budget.
Willow River Power Company (Hudson, Wisconsin)	Title: Willow River Power Company Records, 1866-1953 Quantity: 8.4 c.f. (14 archives boxes and 15 oversize volumes) Call Number: River Falls Mss H Abstract: Business records for the flour and gristmills and the electric power plants operated on the Willow River by Christian Burkhardt (1834-1931) and his family of Burkhardt and Hudson, Wisconsin. Burkhardt, a native of Germany, built his first dam and flour mill on the Willow River in 1868. By 1894 a new mill had been erected and electric generators had been installed, and by 1900 electrical power was being supplied to the city of Hudson for street lighting and residential use. In 1907 all company operations were consolidated into the Burkhardt Milling and Electric Power Company, but because of its continued growth and diversification, the power business was separated from the milling business by the creation in 1922 of the Willow River Power Company. In 1944 all of the Burkhardt properties were purchased by Northern States Power Company. The bulk of the collection is composed of financial and legal records. Minutes of meetings of the Burkhardt Milling and Electric Company, 1907-1947, together with cash and sales books, journals, ledgers, trial balances, and grain and shipping accounts of varied dates relate primarily to the operations of the flour and grain mills, mainly in the period after 1885. Sales records, 1901-1918, minutes of stockholders' and directors' meetings of the Willow River Power Company, 1922-1940, a few reports to state and federal agencies, and assorted legal papers relate to the production and sale of electricity. Wills, editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel and active member of several professional journalism organizations. The collection includes material from his participation in the National News Council (NNC) and the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE), including correspondence and minutes of board meetings for the NNC (1980-1985, the period during which he represented ASNE at board meetings); correspondence concerning ASNE's Ethics Committee; and material regarding the feasibility of establishing a Wisconsin News Council. Also included are many of Wills' speeches on a wide variety of media issues, and correspondence and memoranda on open records and freedom of information issues. Additional documentation concerns the civil disturbances in Milwaukee in 1967.

Includes Wilson's “It Happened Last Night” columns, 1946-1964; his TV Guide columns, 1955-1957; materials on his 1962 play, Home Cooking; and scattered radio and television scripts. Included are investigative and background materials used as evidence for the Senate Subcommittee of the Committee on Education and Labor (1936-1940) in its investigation of oppressive labor practices of agricultural companies in California. Also included are publications of the Army Morale Services Division (1942-1946), which later became the Information and Education Division, some of which Wilson either researched or helped write as well as materials related to Wilson's testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Internal Security, which was investigating Communist activity in the U.S. government and army. In addition, there is extensive material for both the Progressive Party and the American Labor Party (1948-1953), focusing on 1948 presidential candidate, Henry Wallace, and 1949 New York mayoral candidate, Vito Marcantonio.

Title: Winding Rivers Library System Records Physical Description: 8.0 cubic feet Call Number: La Crosse Series 014 Abstract: The Winding Rivers Library System, headquartered in La Crosse, Wis., began with a Library and Construction Act (LSCA) grant in 1965 to the La Crosse Public Library to develop an area library system among public libraries. It was known as La Crosse Area Library Development initially and in 1972 the name was changed to La Crosse Area Library System. Another name change in 1978 resulted in Winding Rivers Library System (WRLS). Today WRLS serves multiple libraries in a seven county region of Wisconsin: Buffalo, Jackson, Juneau, La Crosse, Monroe, Trempealeau and Vernon Counties. Records include Board materials, such as minutes (1971-1990), director’s files and the like; historical materials which include a time line of WRLS development and newspaper clippings; financial records include audits (1971-1993), budgets and financial statements; Library and Technology Act (LSTA) grant files; visual materials which include photographs and 35 mm slides of various staff, board members and services; programs which include Mail-A-Book, Mail-A-Film, Bookmobile and others; publications which include the system newsletter “Whirlpools” (1979-2005); reports which include annual reports to the state of Wisconsin (1973-1993) and to the WRLS board of trustees (1985-2001); and files on system members.
