La Budde campaigned for compulsory conservation education, the restoration of Horicon Marsh, a resident fishing license bill, preservation of tracts of virgin timber and reforestation, and improved Indian welfare. Letters include correspondence with members of the Wisconsin legislature, with congressmen from most Wisconsin districts, with Wisconsin senators and governors, and with other conservationists such as Charles Broughton, Louis Radke, and Haskell Noyes. |

Originally known as the La Crosse County Retired Teachers Association, the organization changed its name to the La Crosse Area Retired Teachers Association in 1966. A second name change occurred in 1993 when the organization became known as the La Crosse Area Retired Educators Association. The group is still active. In 1959, the group became part of the Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association. The organization is also affiliated with the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA), a division of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). | La Crosse Bridge Association (La Crosse, Wis.). | Title: La Crosse Bridge Association Records Physical Description: 0.4 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 087 Abstract: Also known as the “Citizens Bridge Committee” and the “La Crosse Bridge Dedication Committee,” the La Crosse Bridge Association (La Crosse, Wis.) sought to promote the construction of a new trans-channel Mississippi River Bridge and arrange for its public dedication. This group came into existence shortly after a sudden traffic accident caused the failure of the municipal wagon bridge (built in 1891). The collection consists of records of the La Crosse Bridge Association from 1935 and 1940. Materials include correspondence, minutes, committee materials, financial records, article/history drafts, and a photographic scrapbook documenting the new Cass Street bridge (Mississippi High Bridge) parade and dedication held on September 23, 1939. |

| La Crosse Committee on Aging. | Title: La Crosse Committee on Aging Records Physical Description: 2.4 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 054 Abstract: The La Crosse Committee on Aging began in 1965 and was a quasi-public entity. In the early 1990s, the organization's finances came under public scrutiny. The board of directors dissolved the group in 1992. Records are divided into two major categories of administrative files and financial materials; within the series the files are listed alphabetically. Administrative materials include board of directors' files such as minutes (1964-1979; 1981-1988; 1990-1992) and a list of members (1966-1991). Other files include executive correspondence, legal documents, newsletters, and materials related to special events sponsored by the Committee. Financial materials include audits (1974-1991), grant information, IRS correspondence, ledgers (1970-1992), treasurers' reports (1967-1991), correspondence and financial reporting to the United Way, and various tax documents. |

The La Crosse Music Study Club (for which a history is included) offered an “Artists series” from 1919 to 1926 forming the basis for the association which affiliated with Community Concerts (a division of Columbia Artists Management, Inc.) and started its first concert series in 1932. |

The name was then changed to the La Crosse Concert Band. Privately sponsored, the band of professional musicians continues to perform every summer in La Crosse parks. Records of the La Crosse Concert Band (originally named the La Crosse City Band) consist of a constitution (2004), list of board members (2003-2004), minutes (1956-1978), clippings and schedules (1931-1982; 1993-2005), and photographs (1937-1967; 1979; 1990-2005). Lastly, a plastic kazoo with the Band's insignia is included. |

The minutes also include a special 1976 budget review meeting, a 1977 special meeting regarding the landfill site at Lakeview Farm and a few voucher signing meetings. Call Number: La Crosse Series 68 Abstract: Records of the county superintendent of schools including annual district reports, minutes of the La Crosse County school committee, 1947-1965, and files on school district boundary changes, 1921-1965. The annual reports include statistical and financial information as well as censuses of children under 20 years of age for each school district. The boundary files contain correspondence, minutes of public meetings, and orders describing land involved in approved and denied changes. For the period 1948-1950 the boundary files include minutes only. The case files are arranged by number and a number log serves as a finding aid to this section. Additionally, there are roster cards about individual teachers noting their salaries, their educational background, and other biographical information, and, for an earlier period, salary information is present in the superintendent's reports to the Teachers' Retirement Fund. |

Most materials date from 1968-1982 and include some historical background, administrative files, facility planning, financial, membership lists, meeting minutes (1929-1982), newsletters, some photographs and special events (Bonspiels). Most of the records are photocopies of originals with two exceptions. A book of minutes covers the period December 1929-April 1964. Original photographs (circa 1950s) are included as well. The club sold their facility at 1905 Palace St. in 1998. A small group of club members continue to curl at the Galesville Curling Club. Members of the La Crosse Curling Club carry on their search for another facility in La Crosse. |

Records include history materials made up of an essay entitled “Reflections on a Sister-City Odyssey: La Crosse and Dubna” by Charles E. Hanson (2001), newspaper articles (2000-2004), and a book about Dubna written in Russian. Administrative materials include board of director minutes (2005), correspondence (2004), and newsletters (1990-1997). Programs include information on Hands Across the Heartlands (1992-1993) and Russia Week (1996). Youth programs/exchanges include materials on Pioneer Camp (1991), the exchange program (1992-1994), and a thematic exchange called “Ecology of Big Waters” (1993-1994). Memorabilia includes a commemorative plate from Dubna and a decorative painted spoon. |

The public library was originally funded through a bequest of former Wisconsin governor Cadwallader C. Washburn, and was overseen by a private board until Dec. 1981 when the library became a city department. Records consist of board materials, such as minutes, annual reports, departmental statistics, budgets and other financial information, correspondence, documents relating to the three library buildings, and individual departments and service areas. Also a good collection of photographs and moving images are included of the buildings (interior and exterior), board members, directors, staff, and Cadwallader C. Washburn. |

Included are minutes, correspondence, publicity materials, position papers, background information, clippings, maps, and information on the La Crosse River Valley Study. |

(24 archives boxes and 15 flat boxes) and 9 photographs Call Number: La Crosse Series 45; PH La Crosse Series 45 Abstract: Records of the school district of La Crosse, Wisconsin, consisting of minutes of the Board of Education, 1851-1971; published annual reports, 1874-1972; administrative bulletins, 1937-1974; clipping scrapbooks, 1875-1954; and administrative subject files. The last-named contains school directories; budgets and information on teacher salaries; surveys and planning materials for construction and renovation of buildings; handbooks for teachers, parents, and students; curricular materials and evaluations; and other publications and reports. There are also files of brochures and printed materials on individual schools such as Central High School and Logan Junior High School, as well as bulletins and other records of Emma Erickson School. Of special interest is a 1936 study of high school graduates and scrapbooks about the turn of the century “Penny Savings System” and the PTO of Washburn School, 1917-1934. Although there is little administrative correspondence in the series, there is a large file of correspondence of former superintendent Richard Bardwell about the administration of child care in La Crosse during World War II. The few photographs received with the series illustrate that child care program, Central High School, and the Fifth Ward School (ca. 1883). |

Local 448 had its charter revoked in 1980 due to the small size of its membership. Council (La Crosse, Wis.). | Title: United Service Organizations, La Crosse, Wisconsin Council Records Physical Description: 0.2 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 083 Abstract: The United Service Organizations for National Defense was organized on a national level in 1941 and consisted of several civilian partner groups: the Salvation Army, Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. Thus the USO was formed, entirely supported by both private citizens and organizations. The USO facilities were to act as recreation centers for armed forces personnel during World War II. Information, counseling services and travelers' aid were also available. Locally, the USO operated from 1941 to 1946. Records (1941-1946) include newspaper clippings, correspondence, facility use reports, field service bulletins, financial records, membership/committees, minutes, notes and some miscellaneous material. |

Bridge Engineer. | Title: La Crosse, Wisconsin, Bridge Engineer Records Physical Description: 0.8 cubic feet Call Number: La Crosse Series 044 Abstract: Directed by the Board of Public Works, the bridge engineer was responsible for operating the drawbridge/swinging span mechanism on the municipal Mississippi River wagon bridge. This bridge was in use from 1891-1939 and was built and maintained by the City of La Crosse (Wis.). These records date from 1901-1939 and list river traffic, mainly steamboats and barges, that required the swinging span to be opened. Information included in these records are the name of and the time the vessel(s) passed through the bridge opening. Occasionally an engineer would note what the vessel was carrying, such as logs or lumber. The records end on Sept. 23, 1939, when the new high bridge at La Crosse was completed by the Wisconsin Highway Commission. |

In 1908 the Council passed an ordinance establishing a Board of Park Commissioners and a Park Department to assume those supervisory duties. Arranged chronologically, these include accounts for each fund, such as fire, poor, general fund, streets, etc., and include income as well as expenditures. The function of this organization, based largely in Wisconsin and Michigan, is to support the activities of the 32nd Division Veterans Association. Records include three historical scrapbooks that provide a great deal of information about the group, its functions, and its officers. Other administrative records include a list of charter members, president's reports, and reunion registers that list attendees. Two newspaper scrapbooks collected by the Ladies document the World War II service of the 32nd Division from basic training through fighting in the Pacific and a military ball program shows a social activity of the Wisconsin National Guard in which the Ladies could take part. Photographs include over 100 shots of various Ladies reunions from the 1950s through the 1990s. These pictures show members eating, dancing, installing officers, and socializing with each other and with men from the 32nd Division Veterans Association, who held their reunions at the same time. Other photographs show Ladies members who compiled a cook book, many of their group presidents, entertainer Joe E. Brown (who was a special guest at a reunion), the home of General Edwin F. Harding, and a ceremony at the Wisconsin National Guard military ball at which the newly formed 32nd Infantry Battalion inherited the honors of the 32nd Infantry Division. |

They contain information on organizing his administration, legislation, the formation of the Progressive Party in 1934, the dismissal of University President Glenn Frank in 1936, and the founding of the National Progressives of America in 1938. The Personal Papers contain La Follette's correspondence with members of his family and friends throughout his lifetime and general correspondence written during the years when he was out of office. Formed with the immediate goal of opposing state legislation that eroded the protections guaranteed to lesbians and gays under Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, the group later dedicated itself to promoting equality in many areas: alternative families, criminal justice, health care, housing, political participation, and public accommodations. LRN sponsored "Community Speak Outs" that brought together public officials and members of the gay and lesbian community; held candidate forums for federal, state, and local races; met with public officials; gathered information about local hate crimes; and networked with other local gay and lesbian organizations. Lauer, a sanitary squadman during World War I who was very active and prominent in veterans' organizations throughout his life. The largest portion of the collection relates to Lauer's work with three different veterans' organziations: the 32nd Division Veterans Association, the National Tuscania Survivor's Association, and the Red Arrow Club of Milwaukee. These materials document his role as historian and give an idea of the activities of the organizations. The 32nd Division Veterans Association played a large role in the publication of Harold Blakeley's 32nd Infantry Division in World War II, the Tuscania group corresponded with the German U-boat captain who sank their ship, and the Red Arrow Club successfully lobbied to have State Highway 32 dedicated as the Red Arrow 32nd Division Memorial Highway. The collection also contains materials relating to Lauer's work in the war industries during World War II, particularly papers and photographs from the Milwaukee Ordnance Plant. Lauer's role as a historian in veterans' organizations led other veterans to entrust him with their primary documents; this collection has military intelligence documents from both World Wars, including maps, reports, and photographs. Lauer's numerous writings, autobiographical and unit histories, are included along with some unpublished historical writings of others on the World Wars. The histories of the 126th Infantry Regiment in World War I and the 127th Infantry Regiment in World War II are particularly comprehensive. |

(12 archives boxes and 2 flat boxes) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 18 Abstract: Personal, family, and business papers of the Lawton, Baird, Carey, Arndt, and Delany families of De Pere, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New York, primarily focussed on the lives of Joseph Grellet Lawton, his wife, Ellen Virginia Baird Lawton, and their children and other relatives. Joseph G. Lawton was an early Wisconsin settler, entrepreneur, and developer instrumental in encouraging settlement and industrial growth in the Green Bay area. He and his wife held interests in land, banks, bridges, dams, and factories, as well as land and mining interests in Pennsylvania. The collection contains correspondence concerning family and personal news; business letterbooks and financial records from enterprises in both Wisconsin and Pennsylvania; Joseph Lawton's daily journals and diaries; an account book of William M. Lawton, a Chicago attorney; and a few papers of Ellen J. Lawton Thompson. |

(6 archives boxes and 1 oversize box) of photographs Call Number: Milwaukee Mss 168; PH Milwaukee Mss 168 Abstract: Official records of the Milwaukee, Wis. art school which was established by Charlotte Partridge and Miriam Frink in 1920 and closed due to financial insolvency in 1974. At its closure, the school was regarded as one of the top five art schools in the country and enjoyed a historical reputation for innovative methods in art education. Included are minutes of the Board of Trustees/Directors; correspondence; and administrative, financial, curricular, legal, historical, public relations, building, registrar's, and student-related materials which provide a broad look at the school's operations and methods. Records primarily cover the period from 1954 to 1974 and coincide with administrative terms of Layton directors Edmund Lewandowski (1954-1972) and Neil Lieberman (1972-1974). Files pertaining to the faculty union established at the school in 1971 and subsequent grievances and lawsuits indicate increasing hostilities between Layton administration and its faculty. Much of the material, including a separate file maintained by Board chair Carl Moebius records the school's traumatic closing. Photographs, mostly dating from 1954 to 1974, document Layton classrooms, art education, student projects, and some of the exhibitions held at the school. There are also views of the building, faculty, Layton Art Gallery, and student life. |
