(12 archives boxes) and 22 photographs Call Number: Parkside Mss 62; PH 3642 Abstract: Records of a Racine, Wisconsin, department store established in 1898 and closed in 1982. Most materials date from the 1920's and 1930's and are significant for their documentation of advertising and marketing techniques, and as a representation of the designs and cultural values of those decades. Included are materials used in merchandising studies conducted in conjunction with the University of Michigan's Bureau of Business Research; advertising and promotional materials, including 66 monthly issues of Zahnettes, 1921-1928, and other direct mail advertising; blueprints and plans of the store; materials concerning store supplies and fixtures; and suppliers' catalogs and fliers. Also included are a small number of personal papers of the store's founder, Edward Zahn and one of his sons, Russell Victor Zahn. |

Also included are several miscellaneous letters. Two from a Viola addressed to her parents and sister, a Mrs. Sarah H. Knible, two from Edward L. G. Zalinski to his sister and brother-in-law Anne and Simon Adler, and one is a letter from the Alumni Association of Lehigh University to Edward Robin Zalinski. |

Papers pertain to Zander's personal, civic, and professional activities and include correspondence, transcripts of Congressional hearings, tape recordings, photographs, and other records dealing with the union's housing developments and Zander's ouster as president of AFSCME. There are also papers relating to his teaching at Green Bay and to other groups and interests in which Zander was involved: the National Planning Association and international planning, Public Services International, and United World Federalists and world peace. Tape recordings include a 1958 address by Harry Golden, editor of the Carolina Israelite, to the National Trade Union Council on Civil Rights of the Jewish Labor Committee; and speeches by Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg, Governor Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, United Auto Workers president Walter Reuther, and Zander at the silver anniversary of AFSCME on November 17, 1961. |

Included is correspondence with noted socialist and money-reform leaders; writings on socialism, money, and taxation; personal financial records; clippings about Zander; genealogical records; minutes of the Two Rivers Social-Democratic Party (1904-1908), and his father William's personal and sawmill business ledgers, 1875-1896, and 1886 building specifications for a house. |

(1 folder), 3 reels of microfilm (35mm), 59 disc recordings, and 4 photographs Call Number: La Crosse Micro 12; Micro 948; SC 775; Disc 166A; Tape 1068A; PH SC 775 Abstract: Papers primarily on a two-year study, 1946-1948, proposed and conducted by Professor Edmund I. Zawacki of the Department of Slavic Languages, University of Wisconsin, which aimed at taking a microscopic look at a Polish-derived community in Wisconsin, measuring how both the culture of the Polish immigrant and the culture of the American inhabitant were changed as a result of heavy Polish immigration into the area. The study was part of the Committee on Studies in American Civilization, a research and teaching program conducted at the University of Wisconsin from 1946 to 1953 sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. The collection consists of correspondence; research material obtained from a year's field work by Harriet Pawlowski in Independence, Wis., including eighty case histories of Polish families in the area; various explanations and summaries of the study; and an outline and chapter drafts for the projected but never completed study report. The sound recordings contain Polish and American folk songs, religious hymns sung in Polish and in English, instrumental Polish folk music, and discussions of Polish and American folk ways. Also present in paper form only are several articles and lectures, 1953-1957, by Zawacki on U.S. international relations and the Cold War. The photographic portion of this collection includes images of Zawacki at a Marquette University presentation; speaking on the Cuba situation at a YGOP rally in Madison, Wis.; and driving a car with a placard on top, “Vote Right, Vote Yes, Frank Lloyd Wright Monona Terrace Site.” |
