Quantity: 3.4 cubic ft. 8 boxes Call Number: UWP Manuscript Collection 004 Abstract: Racine County Home and Community Education was founded in 1947 as the Home Demonstration Council, a national women’s program of the University of Wisconsin Extension supported by the United States Department of Agriculture. In 1994, the state withdrew from the national organization to become the Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education. Membership was open to all interested individuals, but chiefly consisted of women. The collection primarily contains organizational records, activity products, and scrapbooks. |

This is a relatively complete set of tax rolls through 1920. After 1920, only every fifth year has been preserved, except for the city of Racine for which a complete set of rolls for the 1920's was kept and the every-fifth-year practice was begun in 1930. |

(34 archives boxes) Call Number: Racine Series 120 Abstract: Envelopes used to collect personal history and military service records for every person living in Racine County, Wisconsin who served in any branch of the United States military, primarily in World War II. For some individuals other prior military service is also recorded. Most of the envelopes contain worksheets, newspaper clippings, and photographs of the individuals, most in military uniform. Although the amount of information provided on each envelope varies, the following data is generally completed: name; political subdivision; draft and serial numbers; home address; name, address, and relationship of nearest relative; personal history including date and place of birth; citizenship status; race; marital status; Racine County schools attended; occupation; last employer; date entered service; drafted or enlisted; branch of service; rank on entry; reception center; training camps and schools; date of discharge; place of discharge; remarks; and whether photograph is enclosed or not. |

The collection consists mainly of corporate financial records and tax returns. Included are a minute book, stock certificate book, order and account book, miscellaneous correspondence, and scattered financial and production records. |

| Racine Unified School District No. 1 (Wis.) | Title: Racine Unified School District No. 1 (Wis.): Reports and Financial Records, 1910-1971 Quantity: 3.8 c.f. (7 archives boxes, 1 record center carton, and 1 flat box) Call Number: Racine Series 137 Abstract: Reports, primarily of a financial or statistical nature, of the Racine School District. Included are published annual reports of the superintendent to the Racine Board of Education, 1910-1930; audits; budgets; reports to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, 1920-1967; and files on the construction of individual school buildings. The superintendent's annual reports to the board include statistics on the student population and district income and expenditures, directories of school officials and teachers, statutes, rules, and regulations; lists of high school graduates; and illustrations. The annual reports to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction include descriptive statistics about the district and its student population; reports of receipts and expenditures; and information about the instructional staff, their professional qualifications, and salaries. Early reports submitted to the district superintendent by individual school principals are also included. After 1960 the state superintendent's reports include only the materials used in the preparation of the state reports, but not the final reports themselves. Also included are a few NEA reports and district self-evaluations submitted to the state office. The construction files consist of correspondence and memoranda exchanged with architects, contractors, and prospective bidders for building projects between 1913 and 1922. There are specifications in the files, but no plans or drawings. Additionally, there are reports on two special district studies: one undertaken by the Board of Education itself in 1926 and one conducted by Griffenhagen and Associates in 1933. Also included is a survey of public educational opportunities in the district, conducted by the League of Women Voters of Racine, 1971, and a promotional brochure (undated) for the Prairie School, a private school. |

Focus of the records is on planning, policy making, program development, and evaluation. The bulk of the records, from 1967 to 1982, reflect upheaval and reexamination of educational concerns with the major topical areas of desegregation, busing, litigation, alternative and magnet schools, bilingual education, flexible scheduling, school dropouts, gifted student programs, Headstart, special education, teacher contract disputes involving the Racine Education Association (the teachers' union), and administrative personnel issues. The Racine school district received national attention during the 1960's and 1970's due to its voluntary efforts to desegregate its schools. |

The papers mainly consist of correspondence and reports regarding Lorraine Radtke's career with the School Board and its various committees, such as the Special Committee on Equality of Educational Opportunity and the Committee on Instruction. These records also include a study, conducted by Radtke, examining the attitudes of teachers in the Milwaukee Public School System. Of interest are the materials relating to the segregation and integration of the schools. A small portion of the records reflect Radtke's other occupations and private life, including personal correspondence. The collection also contains newspaper clippings, fliers, and programs for the 1947 and 1948 season of Music Under the Stars sponsored by the Milwaukee County Park Commission. |

(2 archives boxes) Call Number: Series 1823 Abstract: Legal declarations by water, electric, and other public utility companies surrendering their franchises in exchange for indeterminate permits, pursuant to chapters 499 and 578, Laws of Wisconsin, 1907. The files also include statements from street and interurban railway companies electing not to accept indeterminate permits, but continue to operate under their existing franchises, pursuant to chapter 442, section 2, Laws of Wisconsin, 1919. Accepting an indeterminate permit constituted implied consent on the part of the utility company to the future purchase of its property by the municipality in which the major part of the utility was situated. Box 1, folder 1 contains a docket book showing date of filing, utility name, and location. |

The railway companies investigated were the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul; Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha; Chicago and Northwestern; and the Wisconsin Central. The papers consist entirely of presentations of figures of deductions from freight and passenger earnings, vouchers, car switching, car mileage, recapitulations, demurrage, mileage paid car companies, switching collections, and gross freight earnings. Also included is a printed report of Commissioner John W. Thomas, July 6, 1906. |

(29 boxes); 41 safety film negatives Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 43 Abstract: Collection contains over 600 pieces of original artwork, as well as correspondence and news clippings, of a sports cartoonist for the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel newspapers. Many of the original artworks contain drawings of several individuals. Most of the drawings date from the mid 1950s to mid 1970s. Some of the stars portrayed are Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Liz Blackbourn, Ty Cobb, Dizzy Dean, Mike Ditka, George Halas, Vince Lombardi, Eddie Mathews, Mickey Mantle, "Red" Schoendienst, Babe Ruth, Warren Spahn, Bart Starr, and Johnny Unitas. Rainovic drew fourteen images of Hank Aaron, more than any other sports star in the collection. Most of Rainovic's team drawings concern the Milwaukee Braves and their opponents. Other sports documented in the collection include auto racing, basketball, bowling, boxing, football, golf, hockey, horse racing, polo, skating, skiing, tennis, and track and field. Most of these sports are represented by less than twenty images. The collection also includes a full run (1975-1980) of The Diamond Report, a national quarterly baseball publication which Rainovic edited and published, and his correspondence as a freelance caricaturist and writer. The collection is indexed in a database which contains the names of each person named and depicted in the drawings. |

In addition, Paul Raushenbush was head of the Wisconsin Unemployment Division from 1934 to 1967 and Elizabeth Brandeis Raushenbush was a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin and a leader in the League of Women Voters. Included are his general correspondence, speeches and writings (including an edited oral history published as Our U.C. Story) and unemployment compensation materials (1932-1934) not related to administration of the Wisconsin Unemployment Division. Her papers document teaching at the University of Wisconsin, activities in the League of Women Voters (especially its Wisconsin Tax Study Committee) and the American Federation of Teachers Local 223, extensive public speaking and writing on labor-related topics, and service on various state and federal study committees. |

Call Number: WVM Mss 1312 Abstract: Papers and photographs pertaining to Rose Ray and her husband Fred Ray, Milwaukee, Wisconsin residents who both served in the Army during World War II. The collection has been organized into materials pertaining to each person. The majority of manuscripts and photographs document Rose's service. Rose (maiden name Jrolf) enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943 and received training at Daytona Beach, Florida. After training, Rose was first transferred to Nebraska and then quickly promoted to Mess Sergeant at Sedalia Army Air Field, Missouri (present day Whiteman Air Force Base). While at Sedalia, Rose successfully organized a feuding kitchen staff into a working unit. Manuscripts include service records, certificates, a diary, postcards, ephemeral military items, and WAC memorabilia. Also included are interesting items documenting her time at Sedalia, which include menus from kitchen staff parties, a humorous list of rules for the mess hall, recipes for Christmas cookies, and a poem written by a soldier about the kitchen staff. Photographs include those from training at Daytona Beach, images of the Sedalia kitchen staff and parties, and posing with friends and relatives. There are also images of Rose posing in uniform and also photographs from her military wedding to Fred Ray. Also included are images sent to Rose by fellow soldiers who were training at other bases. Fred Ray, originally from Covington, Virginia, enlisted in the Army in 1939. He was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps and stationed at Albrook Army Airfield in the Panama Canal Zone. Fred was transferred to Sedalia in 1944, where he met Rose. Manuscripts include service records, certificates, identification cards, a newspaper clipping from Sedalia about the bowling team, and menus from holiday meals while in Panama. Photographs include a large collection of recreational activities from his time in Panama. Images show soldiers relaxing, swimming, and also kayaking and canoeing. The photograph collection also includes images of various unidentified soldiers and sailors who were apparently friends with Fred. One interesting image shows two soldiers sitting in the cockpit of a downed German plane. |
