| Nash, N. Richard, 1913- | Title: N. Richard Nash Papers, 1925-1968 Quantity: 22.0 c.f. (53 archives boxes) Call Number: U.S. Mss 41AN Abstract: Papers of a prolific American playwright and author, best known for his Broadway play and film, The Rainmaker, and his teleplays for television series such as the Philco Playhouse. Included are numerous drafts and final versions of Nash's plays, teleplays, screenplays, short stories, and unfinished works, many of them heavily annotated; outlines, treatments, synopses, notes, and similar production-related records. Among the works represented are Nash's award-winning plays, Parting at Imsdorf and Rouge Atomique, his Broadway plays Second Best Bed, The Young and Fair, See the Jaguar, The Rainmaker, Girls of Summer, Handful of Fire, Wildcat, and The Happy Time. Other files consist of correspondence, personal papers, and a few financial records of Nash's personal and business enterprises. There is a small file of his high school essays and exams, dating from 1928. |

(2 archives boxes); plus additions of 10.6 c.f., 1.5 c.f. of photographs, 1 videorecording, and 144 tape recordings Call Number: Mss 30; M2005-129 Abstract: Papers of Philleo Nash, a prominent Wisconsin Democrat, primarily concerning the 1956 Presidential election campaign. Nash was a member of the Wisconsin delegation to the Democratic Convention in Chicago that year and was chair of the Wisconsin State Democratic Committee. Included is correspondence and itineraries; campaign literature and speeches by Averell Harriman, Estes Kefauver, and Adlai Stevenson; and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and press releases. A few items concern his 1955 election as state chair and his election to the office of Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor in 1958. Also documented are Nash's education and his varied professional life including his career as an applied anthropologist, manager of the family cranberry business, university professor, civil rights activist, and public servant. |

The collection documents ethnic programming from the 1930s through the 1950s, and includes biographical information, a copy of Nastal's reminiscences of service with Polish Volunteer Forces of the Canadian Army during World War I, advertising contracts, program logs, and scripts. The logs, in English, are from Our Polish Hour, dating 1947-1954; the scripts, in Polish, are from Theater of the Air and daily serialized sketches. The collection also contains eleven tape recordings of broadcasts, primarily Our Polish Hour, circa 1942-1947. |

(19 archives boxes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss EP Abstract: Records of the Milwaukee branch reflecting particularly the work of Wilbur and Ardie A. Clark Halyard, prominent black community and business leaders. Founded in 1919, the Milwaukee branch was inactive between 1930 and 1949, but revived during the 1950s and 1960s. Much of the branch activity was directed towards fund raising and annual membership campaigns. Although the collection includes national, regional, state, and local records of the NAACP, the most extensive records are those documenting the Milwaukee branch's administrative committees and subject files. |

(21 archives boxes), 5 tape recordings, 7 photographs, and 2 negatives Call Number: Parkside Mss 66; PH Parkside Mss 66; Audio 1153A Abstract: Records of the Racine branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), dating mainly from the presidency of Julian Thomas (1964- ). Included are correspondence, activity files, and brief records on national and state NAACP events. There is also personal correspondence and notes of Thomas, mainly illustrating his work with other Racine civil rights and civic groups; as well as annual reports, membership records, minutes, newsletters and clippings, and reference files. The collection documents affirmative action and equal opportunity programs in Racine, school desegregation, open housing efforts, community action programs, and police community relations. There are also records of the Racine Environment Committee collected during Thomas's tenure on its board of directors, and a few papers from Thomas's minority relations work as an employee of the J.I. Case Company. National, regional, and state NAACP records primarily consist of records of conventions collected by Racine branch members who attended the meetings. Photographs include images of Thomas and other branch members. |

These records primarily document the informational clearinghouse function of the board and consist of correspondence files (mainly 1920-1950) of NABP secretaries H.C. Christensen and Patrick H. Costello. Also included are microfilmed examination questions from NABP sample exams and actual state board examinations, ca. 1915-1950. Although most NAB activities concern the establishment of broadcasting codes and support of the industry in matters relating to government regulation, the bulk of the collection pertains to the association's research function. The balance of the collection consists of files relating to the American Heritage Foundation's 1952 and 1956 Register and Vote promotion; John Meagher, NAB vice-president for radio, 1952-1955; a large group of broadcast editorials; and a file of miscellaneous publications. Also present is a videotape and audio tape of Lyndon B. Johnson's address to the 1968 convention. |

The NAEB traced its origins to the formation of the Association of College and University Broadcasting Stations in 1925. The largest part of the collection is a subject file which documents the NAEB's board of directors, committees, conventions, conferences, seminars, and workshops; the development of the Educational Television Facilities Act of 1962; projects funded through Title VII of the National Defense Education Act of 1958; a curriculum development project directed by Marshall McLuhan; programming material on such offerings as the series “Jeffersonian Heritage”; and files on the National Educational Television and Radio Center, the Fund for Adult Education, the Joint Committee on Educational Television, and other organizations and foundations interested in educational broadcasting. The NAEB disbanded in 1981. |

Correspondence to and from Wisconsin legislators and U.S. congressmen concerns such subjects as urban renewal, city public housing projects, divorce laws, health and welfare service bills, relief laws, curfew ordinances, and residence requirements for public assistance. Other correspondence, memoranda, minutes and reports, pamphlets, and bulletins pertain to other Wisconsin chapters of NASW; NASW's position on various welfare issues; salary studies; the Tripp Committee Report concerning the School of Social Work of the University of Wisconsin; and the Newburgh (New York) welfare plan which denied relief to specified categories of welfare recipients. |

The records document the professionalization of social work and the organization's advocacy role in issues relating to social welfare and include records from the national offices of the NASW as well as records from the Southeastern, South Central, Southwestern, and North Central Wisconsin Branches. The records consist of Chapter correspondence, meeting minutes, financial reports, committee reports, annual reports, newsletters, news clippings, and social action records. A significant portion of the collection consists of the files of the various executive directors of the Wisconsin Chapter. |

In late 1995 the group voted to become a chapter affiliated with the National Audubon Society and changed their name to the Coulee Region Audubon Society. The members wanted to gain more members, form partnerships with other chapters, create a wider scope, and focus attention on the Upper Mississippi River area. The group continues today. Records of the Coulee Region Audubon Society include a constitution and by-laws adopted circa 1965 by the La Crosse Audubon Society, general correspondence (1965-1988), correspondence with the National Audubon Society and the Wisconsin Audubon Council (1965-1987), a list of field trips (1965-1978), meeting meetings of the board (1965-1979) and with the membership (1965-1979), a few undated items from the membership committee, membership lists (1974-1986), newspaper clippings (1970-1981), and lastly treasurer’s reports (1979, 1982, 1988). |

(3 archives boxes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss 207 Abstract: Founded in 1979 at the Chicago Conference on Current Aspects of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Symposium, NCGSTDS became the publisher of Sexual Health Reports, a newsletter that provided factual, up-to-date information to the medical, scientific, and gay/lesbian communities about sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, and other related health issues. Additionally, the organization aided communication between the nation's STD and AIDS service providers, and served as liaison between interested concerns such as the Centers for Disease Control, health organizations, pharmaceutical companies, publishers, and others. The collection includes copies of Sexual Health Reports (originally titled Official Newsletter of the NCGSTDS); correspondence of chair and editor Mark P. Behar including many requests for information; letters to the editor expressing support or hostility; and pamphlets and reports produced by NCGSTDS and others. NCGSTDS dissolved in 1988. |

Two-thirds of the collection consists of exchanges with individuals and organizations from foreign countries and the United States who were active in the anti-war movement. The remainder of the collection pertains to the NCC's steering and standing committees, conferences sponsored by the NCC and other anti-war groups, reports of staff trips and meetings, and various projects such as the International Days of Protest. This section provides revealing, though by no means complete, information about internal operations and disputes. Also included are files of several conferences and staff meetings. |

Originally known as the National Educational Television and Radio Center, NET's activities developed from program acquisition to production, station activation, and a wide variety of services until it functioned as a virtual fourth network. The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, scripts, reports, clippings, photographs, financial records, minutes, and publicity. There are, however, only a limited number of tapes and films. Coverage in incomplete at the highest administrative level, but it is significant for station activation, affiliate relations, and programming. There is also information on NET's on-going self-evaluation and financial shortages; its relations with other organizations concerned with public broadcasting; and its public information, development, and research activities. |

Some of the services established by the Wisconsin Farmers Union are the Farmers Union Central Exchange (CENEX), the Farmers Grain Terminal Association, the Farmers Union Livestock Association, and the Farmers Union Insurance Corporation. Consisting of correspondence and a subject file, the records document the administration, policies, and political stances of both the national and state organizations. Very few records predate 1942. The materials include copies of records from the national organization such as financial records, minutes, reports, speeches of President James Patton, position papers, and press releases. Information is present on the organization's relationship with the American Dairy Association of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Association of Cooperatives, its lobbying activities, youth programs, charges of communist sympathies within the organization, its service organizations, and other topics. Included are files on NPAC's internal structure, correspondence, financial records, publications, and other general records; activities files; and a small affiliate file. Material relating to NPAC's internal structure includes announcements, agenda, and minutes for many meetings of the national steering committee and lists of members and affiliated locals. Early issues (1923-1936) of the NPRC newsletter, News Bulletin, which disseminated reports of successful publicity for private-sector health and welfare agencies, is available only on microfilm. Naujoks, legal counsel and president of the Great Lakes Harbors Association and an authority on Chicago water diversion litigation. Most date from 1951 to 1960 and many concern Naujoks' role in opposing increased diversion of Lake Michigan waters by the Chicago Metropolitan Sanitary District, on behalf of the Great Lakes Harbors Association and as Special Assistant to the Attorneys General of Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The papers also reflect efforts to win Congressional approval for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Waterway and Power Project, and to further the development of Great Lakes local harbors. Other segments deal with other Great Lakes topics and Great Lakes Harbors Association business.
