Gabriner, 1961-1981 (bulk 1965-1979), a radical activist and student at the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison in the 1960s, later an instructor at Laney Community College in San Francisco, and staff member at the underground newspaper, the Leviathan. The collection contains materials documenting Gabriner's interest in several black liberation, feminist, and radical organizations, including position papers and reference articles of the Weather Underground, Laney (California) Community Organizing Committee, and Prairie Fire Organizing Committee; papers of the UW History Students Association; records relating to the People's Press; materials documenting his work in the Civil Rights movement in the south, particularly with the West Tennessee Voters Project and as a field collecting agent for the Wisconsin Historical Society; documents concerning the Wisconsin Draft Resistance Union and its Clearing House in Madison; personal papers documenting his activity in the Puerto Rican Liberation Movement, including his membership in the Puerto Rican Solidarity Committee; and photocopies of Gabriner's FBI files.

Galamison Papers, 1954-1964 Quantity: 2 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 85 Abstract: Microfilmed papers of Milton Galamison, a civil rights activist and minister of Siloam Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, New York, consisting of correspondence, sermons, speeches, reports, and printed matter. The collection documents civic, cultural, and educational activities of Rev. Galamison's congregation, as well as his own activities in various community organizations such as the Brooklyn NAACP chapter and the Parents Workshop for Equality in New York City Schools that worked toward the elimination of segregation in the city school system.

There is a short diary of his journey from New York to Milwaukee and Walworth County in 1841; descriptions of Wisconsin, with emphasis on its geology, written in 1841 and 1844; papers concerning the Monteville and Black River Railroad Company, 1856-1858, and the Mississippi, Black River, and Lake Superior Railroad Company in 1857; Galesville University material, especially during Gale's presidency, 1858-1865; correspondence pertaining to the Upper Mississippi Valley Historical Society of which Gale was the founder and first president in 1863; letters from prominent early residents of La Crosse, Vernon, Jackson, Buffalo, and other counties in west central Wisconsin; letters to his family while an agent for the United States Sanitary Commission in the South, 1863-1864; material concerning the publication and distribution of his publications, Gale Family Records (Galesville, 1866) and The Upper Mississippi (Chicago, 1867); a history of the Winnebago Indians; a history of Walworth County; other articles and addresses; and some correspondence of his son, William Gale, a lawyer at Winona, Minnesota.

(19 archives boxes and 1 oversize folder) Call Number: Wis Mss MP Abstract: Papers of Zona Gale, a Wisconsin novelist and playwright who won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1921 for her play Miss Lulu Bett. Literary papers, including manuscript drafts and revisions of plays, novels, articles, and other writings, form the major portion of the collection. The correspondence includes letters to and from many literary figures. Gale's interests in many other activities are also reflected; among these are woman suffrage, pacifism, prohibition, mysticism, civil liberties, and support of Progressive politics in Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin.

Galpin, Alfred Maurice, 1901-1983;; Galpin, Alfred, 1841-1924	Title: Alfred Galpin Family Papers, 1861-1966 Quantity: 0.8 c.f. (2 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 182 Abstract: Papers documenting the lives of three generations of Galpins from Appleton, Wisconsin, including Civil War letters and diaries, and literary publications and letters of H. P. Lovecraft. The letters and diaries of Alfred Galpin II relate primarily to his service in Co. H of the First Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and other units in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama, and describe camp life, medical treatment, and prison conditions. The papers of Alfred Galpin III include an active correspondence between him and a fellow member of the United Amateur Press Association, supernatural writer H. P. Lovecraft. Present too are copies of poems, short stories, and critical essays written by Lovecraft and Alfred III.

(2 archives boxes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss CS Abstract: Papers of Gamble, a Milwaukee superintendent of the Bureau of Street Construction, most dating 1946-1954 during construction of Milwaukee's expressway system. Primarily scrapbooks on expressways and highway planning, the papers also include a small amount of personal correspondence and biographical materials, and a study of Milwaukee's traffic flow (1946).
Gannett, Betty	Title: Betty Gannett Papers, 1929-1970 Quantity: 3.5 c.f. (11 archives boxes), 17 reels of microfilm (35mm), and 1 tape recording Call Number: Mss 310; Micro 533; Tape 533A Abstract: Papers of Betty Gannett, an officer of the Communist Party (USA) primarily relating to her work as a Marxist theoretician, writer, and teacher. The majority of the collection consists of lectures and papers, notes, and writings of other kinds on political and educational topics, primarily the Communist Party, the role of economics in society, history, philosophy, and scientific socialism. There is also a very small quantity of personal correspondence (including some letters from Elizabeth Gurley Flynn), 1942-1971, and some material relating to the litigation to deport her under provisions of the Smith Act. On tape is a recording of Gannett's funeral.
Ganzow, Earl O.	Title: Earl O. Ganzow Papers and Photographs, Quantity: 1.0 linear ft. (3 archives boxes) of papers and 0.2 linear ft. (1 archives box) of photographs. Call Number: WVM Mss 1026 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Earl O. Ganzow, a private with the 237th Combat Engineer Battalion during World War II who saw action at the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. The collection consists mostly of the letters Ganzow wrote to his wife, Marian, during his service from March 1943 through November 1945. Writing regularly, at times daily, he described his activities as well as his feelings. While in training at Camp Butner (North Carolina), he remarked upon the birth of his daughter and his reluctance to go overseas while also describing his work on the Tennessee Maneuvers repairing civilian property as part of a Fence Repair Company. Overseas, he touched briefly upon his role in the Normandy invasion as well as the fighting that led to the Battle of the Bulge. He described the destruction of European towns, his feeling that he was fighting for his family and the ability to go home to them, and growing stress due to constant enemy artillery attacks. After absent without leave from his unit for roughly one month, Ganzow's letters provided details of his punishment, being sent to the Loire (France) D.T.C. where he faced loss of pay, rationed stationery for letters home, and physical labor. After being released in the autumn of 1945, Ganzow remained in Europe through the end of November and wrote angrily about the delay and his hopes of starting a new life with his wife and daughter. Other papers include some religious (Catholic) materials, souvenirs from basic training, German propaganda cards portraying Adolf Hitler in a positive light, and a piece of Nazi propaganda, written in French, implying that the United States were merely a tool of the Jews. Photographs include shots of Ganzow and Marian, both individually and at their wedding. There are also pictures of bridges built and destroyed by his unit in Europe, and of his trip back to the United States at after the war.

The collection consists of plays based on Wisconsin history and folklore which were written or narrated by Gard for the Wisconsin College of the Air and the Wisconsin Idea Radio Theatre, two series broadcast by WHA, as well as books and films. One College of the Air production, Lost on the Lady Elgin, is available on tape.

Porter of Skaneateles, Onondago County, New York by his brothers-in-law, William N. and Palmer Gardner, and others in southeastern Wisconsin, giving an excellent picture of land speculation practices and early Milwaukee and Kenosha history.
Garlock, Glenn W., 1877-1939	Title: Glenn W. Garlock Papers, 1898-1919, 1926-1936 Quantity: 1 reel of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 704 Abstract: Diaries and correspondence between Glenn Garlock and his family while he was on Army active duty in the Spanish-American War (1898), the 1916 Texas border incidient with Mexico, and World War I (1916-1919). Garlock's World War I letters describe his duties as an officer in the 128th Infantry, 32nd Division, conditions in the trenches while in France, as well as the impact of the war on the French people and countryside. The correspondence describes life in army camps prior to shipping out for the Philippines at Camp Harvey, Wisconsin and Camp Cuba Libre, Florida. Also included are letters from the World War I training camps at Waco, Texas and Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Garner, a long-time alderman in Madison, Wisconsin, and his wife, Mary Parent Garner, documenting Mr. Garner’s studies at the University of Wisconsin, World War I service and Gas School instruction, American Legion activities, and civic interests including the Madison City Council. Mrs. Garner’s papers reflect her civic interests, including Badger Girls State and the State Board of Public Welfare. Also included is family correspondence and a small amount of material from the Garners’ three children. The photographs and negatives document the family and Harrison Garner’s service in the Wisconsin National Guard (1916).

The collection consists of correspondence, addresses, newspaper clippings of highlights from Garrett's diplomatic career, and scrapbooks containing clippings and correspondence relating to Garrett's work as president of the Federal City Council for Washington, D.C., and his leadership in urban redevelopment for the District of Columbia.

Included is a manuscript autobiography, correspondence, clippings, speeches, research notes, and miscellaneous materials of both a personal and technical nature as well as a bound volume of clipped medical articles and letters written by Dr. Gasser's father, Herman Gasser, M.D. Correspondence includes a cable from French surgeon Alexis Carrel.

Gavin, Bill	Title: Bill Gavin Reports, 1958-1976 Quantity: 5 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 683 Abstract: Reports on music trends prepared by Bill Gavin, a radio program consultant, for use by program managers and disc jockeys in programming. Included in these bi-weekly reports, chiefly 1958-1971, are record evaluations and recommended playlists, information on personnel changes among local San Francisco Bay Area radio stations, and Gavin's comments on radio programming and the music industry.

(4 boxes); 29 audio reels; 1 audio cassette Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 240 Abstract: Collection consists of the records of the Gay Peoples Union (GPU), the first gay rights organization in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and one of the earliest such groups in the state. Collection documents the history of GPU from its beginnings as a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student organization to its development as the most important gay and lesbian rights organization in Milwaukee in the 1970s. The collection also includes audio recordings of Gay Perspective, a radio program produced by GPU and broadcast on local radio stations from 1971 to 1972, and other public presentations given by GPU members as part the organization's educational mission.
