Knapp and his son, Henry E. Knapp; various balance sheets, cashbooks, ledgers, and contracts; inventories; records of logging camps and company boats; maps and descriptions of company owned lands; historical sketches of Dunn County, Wis.; notes on Mississippi steamboats; and miscellaneous letterbooks. Also present is J. H. Knapp's private account journal; and a hotel register from the Tainter House in Dunnville indicating guest's name, residence, and destination. |
| Knell, John, 1831-1873 | Title: John Knell Papers, 1851-1883 Quantity: 1.4 c.f. (6 archives boxes) Call Number: Wis Mss KI Abstract: Papers of Knell, who came to America from Germany in 1852 and to Milwaukee in 1855, most of them written in German. There are letters from relatives in Bermersheim, Germany, and from friends in Chicago, Cleveland, St. Louis, Buffalo, and Davenport; several from a brother in New York City; Civil War letters from friends and from Knell who was sutler in the Southwest for the 35th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry; and a few later letters from the Knell children. Among the business papers are letters from Leopold Rindskopf and Son, distillers and wholesale dealers in liquor, with whom Knell became associated as agent in the early 1860s; and invoices of purchase and sale of merchandise in a Milwaukee home furnishing store in which his son George was a partner. There are a number of manuscript volumes of plays in German, and a box of manuscript music. |
| Knoll, Erwin | Title: Erwin Knoll Papers, 1946-1995 Quantity: 9.3 c.f., 23 tape recordings, 26 photographs, and 5 negatives Call Number: M98-177; M99-011; M2007-090 Abstract: Papers of Erwin Knoll, an outspoken advocate for free speech and nonviolence, documenting his career as a journalist for Editor & Publisher (1948-1953, while an evening student at New York University) and The Washington Post (1957-1963), White House correspondent for Newhouse News Service (1963-1968), host of two nationally syndicated radio shows, panel member on the MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour, and editor of The Progressive magazine (1973-1994). The Progressive papers include documentation of United States of America v. The Progressive, Inc., his First Amendment battle fought and won against the U.S. government, which in 1979 tried to restrain The Progressive from publishing an article with the hydrogen bomb formula obtained from publicly available sources. |

Knowles III, governor of Wisconsin, 1965-1971. About Robert Knowles there are biographical clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, and an oral history interview conducted by Tim Ericson of the River Falls ARC; correspondence, orders, logs, a Normandy Invasion notebook, and training materials concerning experiences as an Army Air Force bomber pilot during World War II; speeches and press materials issued as a state legislator; records pertaining to his 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976 election campaigns; papers concerning his leadership in organizations concerned with improved legislative operations such as the National Conference of State Legislatures and the Citizens Conference on State Legislatures; and contracts and correspondence about his work as manager of National Republican conventions in 1960, 1968, 1972, and 1976. Among the prominent correspondents are Ray C. Bliss, Ody Fish, Ernest Keppler, and Stanley York. The Warren P. Knowles papers in this collection primarily relate to research on the Knowles, Nichols, and Blakeney families. Also included are some miscellaneous financial papers of Warren P. Knowles III and of Judge Warren Knowles, father of Robert and Warren. The personal and gubernatorial papers of Warren Knowles are separately catalogued. |

Knowles, a former Republican governor (1965-1971), lieutenant governor (1955-1959/1961-1963), and state senator (1941-1955), who was a central figure in Wisconsin politics from the 1940s through the 1960s. As governor, Knowles' leadership was felt both in the moderate direction taken by the state Republican Party and by his support for legislative initiatives in the areas of state economic development, water pollution, and highway safety. Because Knowles held office during the turbulent 1960s his administration also dealt with problems of national significance such as anti-Vietnam war demonstrations and unrest among the poor and urban Blacks. The papers include eighteen public records series and one manuscript collection. The manuscript collection consists of documentation predating Knowles' election as governor and concerns both his career in the Senate and his tenure as lieutenant governor as well as his private life. |

The papers document Knowlton's involvement with and the activities of Fast for Life (Oakland, 1983); Port Chicago and the Peace Navy (San Francisco Bay, 1983); the Pledge of Resistance campaign and the Emergency Response Network (San Francisco, 1984-1985); the Veterans Fast for Life (1986) and Veterans Peace Action Team; and the lobbying campaign against Contra funding which involved Senator Pete Wilson’s office (1986-1987). |
