| Klafke, Harvey | Title: Harvey Klafke Papers and Photographs, Quantity: 0.4 linear ft. (1 archives box and 1 oversized folder) of papers and 0.8 linear ft. (2 archives boxes and 1 oversized folder) of photographs. Call Number: WVM Mss 947 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Harvey Klafke, who served in the United States Army as part of the American Graves Registration Command (A.G.R.C.) immediately following World War II. Materials relating to graves registration include printed instructions, with a diagram, for transporting remains; blank interment report forms; typed statements taken from German civilians describing their memories of American pilots and soldiers who were captured or killed near their villages; and a list of remains that were identified during “processing,” often by identification tags, personal effects, or physical descriptions. Military papers, including orders, provide some logistical details about his service in Europe. The “I am a doughboy” booklet, in which Klafke wrote numerous notes, describes the Infantry Replacement Training Center that trained soldiers toward the end of the war. Among the souvenirs he collected is a “hugs and kisses” ration book and numerous postcards from Europe. There are also several items belonging to Klafke's brother, Alvin, who served in the Navy during World War II. Photographs include pictures of row upon row of grave markers at American Cemeteries at Brookwood and Cambridge, England; St. Avold (Lorraine), France; and Hamm, Luxembourg. Pictures taken at the Orkney Islands in Scotland show the retrieval and transportation of several flag-draped coffins containing the remains of American soldiers. Other photos show the cathedral in Strasbourg, France, a group of German prisoners of war who worked for the A.G.R.C. in that city, and two group shots of the headquarters, 3rd Field Command of the A.G.R.C. while stationed at Strasbourg. A photo from Cambridge, England shows Dwight D. Eisenhower and Bernard Montgomery in academic dress to receive honorary degrees while another picture shows the grave marker of George S. Patton. There are several photographs from Klafke's basic training at Camp Blanding, Florida and some pictures of Klafke's relatives who served in the military during World War II, including his brother Alvin, cousin Richard, and uncle Raymond. |

(1 archives box)and photographs Call Number: Green Bay Mss 106; PH 3668 Abstract: Fragmentary records of the manager of a farm owned by the Anson Eldred Co., Stiles, Wisconsin, consisting of business letters concerning farm questions and the construction of a greenhouse, a few of Klauser's progress reports of the Stiles farm, 1911-1912, and scattered financial records, mainly related to the greenhouse. Family papers include personal letters from Klauser's mother and others, a partial personal diary, and memorabilia. Photographs depict the exterior and interiors of the Eldred-Klauser family home in Milwaukee, family members (some participating in amateur theatricals), and scenes of family at Wisconsin Dells. |

Kleczka, a Democrat from Milwaukee, who served in the Wisconsin State Assembly (1968-1972), Wisconsin State Senate (1974-1984), and United States House of Representatives (1984-2004), representing Wisconsin's 4th congressional district, which includes the city of Milwaukee. The bulk of the material represents his tenure as a U.S. Representative. Files consist mainly of committee files, legislative and bill files, correspondence, and press. Prominent legislative topics include those related to the Committee on Financial Services (House Banking Committee) and the Ways and Means committee, particularly issues relating to housing, health, social security, and supplemental security income. |

Included are papers collected by Klessig as an officer and founding member of the State Committee to Stop Sanguine (SCSS) including correspondence; press releases and other informational material issued by SCSS, the Northern Environmental Council, the Wisconsin Resources Conservation Council, and other ELF opponents; scientific and general reference material about ELF; and files on the Governor's Ad Hoc Committee on Sanguine. There is also a draft version and correspondence concerning publication of Klessig's book The ELF Odyssey: National Security Versus Environmental Protection (1980). The collection consists of alphabetical subject files containing constituent correspondence, reference material, newsletters, and questionnaires. Topics which are well documented include abortion, aid to private schools, sex education, and Wauwatosa. The collection also contains Distributions, conservative reprints and publications, which Klicka circulated with his personal endorsement. |
