Attwood, William, 1919- Title: William Attwood Papers, 1940-1984
Quantity: 6.0 c.f. (16 archives boxes)
Call Number: Mss 663
Abstract: Personal and professional papers of William Attwood, a journalist, author, and U.S. ambassador to Guinea and Kenya. Attwood also represented the U.S. government in various capacities in matters concerning the United Nations. Correspondence resulting from Attwood's many friendships, varied interests, and numerous professional and organizational positions contributes significantly to the collection's scope. Attwood's career in magazine and newspaper journalism is thoroughly documented: foreign correspondent based in post-war Europe; European/national/foreign editor of Look magazine (1951-1961) and later editor-in-chief/director/vice-president of Cowles/Look publications (1966-1969); and president and publisher of the newspaper Newsday (1971-1979). Post-war articles provide insightful accounts of life in a re-building Europe. Comprehensive files exist on communications between New York and the Paris office of Look magazine (1951-1954) and the attempt (1966-1969) to stave off the magazine's eventual demise; the internal workings of Newsday and correspondence with readers and editors concerning Attwood's books, including The Reds and the Blacks (1968) which was banned in Kenya. Correspondence with readers and editors is the predominant form of material. The collection also documents Attwood's government service. His ambassadorships in Guinea (1961-1963) and Kenya (1964-1966) are represented by correspondence, memoirs, and memorabilia. State Department correspondence (especially that of the Guinea period) includes several confidential discussions of the policies, goals, and ambitions of the Foreign Service during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations. In 1978, Attwood was media representative in the U.S. delegation to the 20th General UNESCO Conference. This conference, and Attwood's later service as a Commissioner of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, are documented by correspondence, memoranda, conference documents, and Congressional testimony. Attwood's other international activities represented in the collection include four trips to Cuba since the Revolution, a visit to China in 1971, his relationship with Prince Norodom Sihanouk, and membership in the Committee on East-West Accord. His national activities are documented by files on the presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson in 1956 and 1960 and that of John Kennedy, for whom Attwood served as a speech writer, in 1960. Later campaigns are also covered.
