Abstract: Jefferson School, also known as Fifth Ward School, was built in 1877. Located on the corner of St. James and Caledonia Streets, it was razed in 1950, and was replaced by Jefferson Elementary, which opened to classes in 1950. Parent organizations were supportive of the school and its students. A Mother’s Club was formed in 1921, and by 1943, became the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). The school operated for over fifty years until closed by the La Crosse School District at the end of the 2005 school year. Materials in the collection include correspondence, newspaper clippings, minutes, miscellaneous materials, and photographs.

Abstract: Records of a Marxist adult education center (1944-1956) in New York City that mainly concern its listing by the Subversive Activities Control Board as a communist front. Such records include legal documents, hearing transcripts, and petitions and statements in support of the school's positions. Concerning internal administration of the Jefferson School are incomplete files of correspondence, annual reports, executive committee meeting minutes, Bulletins of the school's predecessor, the School for Democracy; departmental memoranda; course listings; newsclippings; and speeches and statements by the director, Howard Selsam. Of note among the fragmentary, routine correspondence is a letter from Philip S. Foner, who taught labor history at the school.

Abstract: Kenneth R. Jenkerson (1945-2002) was a lifelong La Crosse, Wis., resident and local historian who had a passion for photography, printing, and local history. He was a frequent visitor to estate sales and auctions in the area. This collection of slides was among the items sold at auction after his death. Generally, the slides were taken by unknown people over a long period of time and were likely purchased by Jenkerson locally. Most images are of the La Crosse area but are generally not identified and some are not dated. The collection is arranged by alphabetically by subject. Larger categories include bridges, circus events, parades, farm and country scenes, and the river.

Correspondence, 1925-1938, relates to Jerome's work as a professor in and chairman of the department of economics at the University of Wisconsin, his connections with national research organizations, his own research, and his efforts to attract graduate students and professors to the University. In addition, the collection contains articles, lectures, and addresses; reports and memoranda of various research associations; materials relating to the economics department; and research data and bibliographies.

Abstract: Records of a Milwaukee social welfare organization which originally collected money and distributed it to the city's needy Jews, but expanded to include social work, job training, medical and dental services, immigrant resettlement, counseling, and care for emotionally disturbed children. Included are minutes, clippings, financial reports, case records, and organization histories; plus minutes (1893-1914) of the United Hebrew Charities; and annual reports, articles of organization, bylaws, and rules of order (1902-1925) of the Federated Jewish Charities of Milwaukee.

Abstract: Papers of Norman Jewison, a noteworthy motion picture producer-director, chiefly comprised of materials relating to films made for Universal Studios and the Mirisch Corporation. Pertaining to such films as The Cincinnati Kid (MGM, 1965), Fiddler on the Roof (UA, 1972), Gaily, Gaily (UA, 1969), Jesus Christ, Superstar (Universal, 1973), In the Heat of the Night (UA, 1967), The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (UA, 1966), and The Thomas Crown Affair (UA, 1968) are correspondence, scripts, photographs, technical production information, contracts, reviews, clippings (some available on microfilm), financial records, and sound track recordings. Jewison's later films are usually well documented and the files trace each title from preproduction planning to distribution and publicity. In addition to the normal production files, the material on Superstar is of interest for its portrayal of Jews' role in the death of Christ. Filed with a group of protest letters from concerned Jewish organizations is one letter from Golda Meir. Also part of the papers are scripts, correspondence, and synopses for unproduced films; scripts and tape recordings for several television programs directed for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and various U.S. networks; general correspondence; and a documentary about Jewison as a filmmaker.
