Abstract: Records of the UWM chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, including materials regarding the establishment of the chapter. The collection largely documents the selection of students and faculty for Phi Kappa Phi membership. The collection contains minutes, which include committee reports; initiation programs and membership lists; constitution and by-laws; correspondence, mainly regarding membership, initiation and chapter activities; some brochures, program materials, and a guide for planning chapter activities; handbooks from the national office; and a number of miscellaneous items.

Abstract: Materials documenting the controversy on where to build new Madison Area Technical College (MATC) facilities. Phil Ball, an aide to Madison, Wisconsin, mayor Paul Soglin, led unsuccessful efforts to keep the facilities in the downtown area. Included are MATC Board meeting materials, correspondence, City of Madison internal memoranda, and news clippings.

Abstract: Eighty-seven one-hour episodes of Philco Television Playhouse, a dramatic anthology series broadcast on NBC between 1948 and 1955. These are all in black and white with sound. All the films are 16 mm. positive kinescopes. The videocassettes are 1/2 in. viewing copies.

Abstract: Papers of a pioneer forest ranger of the Wisconsin Conservation Department, primarily documenting his work for the state in establishing the Wisconsin fire protection program and in forest land acquisition and mapping and his private timberland activities. Included are detailed diaries, which cover the full period of his state employment; correspondence with C.L. Harrington and other departmental officials concerning the development of the fire protection program during the 1920's and land acquisition and mapping during the 1950's. Correspondence also of the 1950's with the Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co. details his private ownership of timberland. The early days of the Wisconsin Forestry program are documented in an oral history interview and in a few photographs. Miscellaneous records include biographical clippings and personnel material; an article concerning the early Wisconsin Forestry program written by MacDonald; forest survey notes of Vilas and Douglas counties and other unidentified areas; and detailed reports from the 1920's concerning fire protection activities and expenses.

Abstract: Papers of Philip E. Stevenson, a writer and editor on social justice and labor, who was blacklisted for his refusal to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1951. The collection best illustrates Stevenson's career as a writer and his interests in the American Southwest, the labor struggles of the New Mexican coal miners, culture and aesthetic theories, and the House Un-American Activities Committee. There is little directly concerning the Hollywood Ten. The largest portion of the collection consists of drafts of five volumes comprising The Seed, which were Morning Noon and Night, Out of the Dust, Old Father Antic, The Hoax, and The Sowing. Other major works documented in the collection are the novels The Edge of the Nest, The Gospel According to St. Luke's, and “The Pig-Iron Venus” (unpublished). A small administrative file of letters, subscriptions, and draft articles submitted for publication reflects Stevenson's work as co-founder and editor of the California Quarterly. On tape is a memorial service for Stevenson. The photographs include family snapshots; albums of photos from a 1912 family European trip and from Stevenson's World War I service; and photos of Paris (1919), Saranac Lake, New York (1920), the Southwest (1930s-1950s), and the Zuni Indian Reservation (1933).

Abstract: Public, personal, and family papers of a three-term governor of Wisconsin and leader of the Progressive Party. The Papers constitute an excellent source for study of the 1930's in Wisconsin, a period when under La Follette's leadership the state served as a model for innovative, aggressive governmental action. They include correspondence, financial records, reports, speeches and writings, press releases, scrapbooks, and recordings. The Public Papers comprise the official papers and correspondence from La Follette's governorship and political career. They contain information on organizing his administration, legislation, the formation of the Progressive Party in 1934, the dismissal of University President Glenn Frank in 1936, and the founding of the National Progressives of America in 1938. The Personal Papers contain La Follette's correspondence with members of his family and friends throughout his lifetime and general correspondence written during the years when he was out of office. Documented is his activity in the America First Committee and his daily activities and thoughts while serving during World War II in the southwest Pacific theatre. The Family Papers include campaign papers for the 1922 Senatorial campaign and the 1924 Presidential campaign of Robert M. La Follette, Sr.; nomination forms for Robert M. La Follette, Jr., 1926; a few items from Belle Case La Follette; and letters, 1944-1947, from Robert M. La Follette III containing his observations on the war in the Philippines and the occupation of Japan. Also in this section are papers of Isabel Bacon La Follette, Philip's wife, documenting her activities as advisor to her husband and as an advocate of women's rights.

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee labor arbitrator consisting of briefs, contracts, correspondence, notes, memoranda, grievance forms, statements, rulings, and other legal papers. The cases handled represent many industrial and manufacturing firms, most notably involving International Harvester, as well as a large number of Wisconsin municipalities and school districts. A separately-cataloged oral history, transcript, and a few related papers concern his involvement in the Wisconsin Democratic Party during the late 1940s.

Abstract: Papers of Philip H. Falk, a Lake Mills, Wisconsin native who attended the University of Wisconsin (Ph.D., 1935) and was superintendent of schools in Lake Mills (1929-1936), Waukesha (1938), and Madison (1939-1963). Included are materials concerning his professional activities and his activities after retirement, mainly as director of the Wisconsin-Nicaragua Partners of the Americas (1965-1983), and as chairman and member of the Madison Redevelopment Authority (1963-1973), which carried out the Triangle and other neighborhood renewal projects.

Abstract: Papers of a New York Times reporter and novelist arranged as personal and professional records. In the first category are correspondence, primarily relating to Benjamin's service during World War II; financial records; diaries; notebooks; memoranda; freelance writings; and manuscript copies of Quick Before It Melts (1964) and a second incomplete novel. Filed as professional materials are news dispatches from Antarctica (1958-1960), the screenplay for Quick Before It Melts (MGM, 1964), reviews and publicity for this motion picture, as well as for the play version of the book, and clippings of Benjamin's Times stories on New York City and on the school integration crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957.

Abstract: Papers of Philleo Nash, a prominent Wisconsin Democrat, primarily concerning the 1956 Presidential election campaign. Nash was a member of the Wisconsin delegation to the Democratic Convention in Chicago that year and was chair of the Wisconsin State Democratic Committee. Included is correspondence and itineraries; campaign literature and speeches by Averell Harriman, Estes Kefauver, and Adlai Stevenson; and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and press releases. A few items concern his 1955 election as state chair and his election to the office of Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor in 1958. Also documented are Nash's education and his varied professional life including his career as an applied anthropologist, manager of the family cranberry business, university professor, civil rights activist, and public servant.

Abstract: Records, mostly dating from the 1950s, of the Phoenix Hosiery Company, which was located in Milwaukee. The collection includes advertising and promotional materials; annual reports; director's reports and board of directors' minutes; photographs, mainly documenting hosiery production; an anniversary booklet containing historical information about the Milwaukee Branch of the American Federation of Hosiery Works; and a publicity scrapbook, largely consisting of newspaper clippings. The collection also contains a detailed history of the company (compiled in 1996) which includes information about the company's finances, management, marketing, competition, production, and labor relations. Also found in the collection are hosiery boxes and nylon canisters, hosiery color samples, samples of stockings in various stages of completion, silkworm cocoons and silk samples, and a number of other advertising/promotional items. Information about the sale of the company to the Kayser-Roth Corporation in 1959 is also included.

Abstract: Organized in April 1982, the La Crosse area chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) was comprised of a group of physicians dedicated to the antinuclear movement and nuclear disarmament. This non-profit organization sponsored numerous special programs including the Festival of Lanterns, and they helped fund the International Peace Lantern Exchange Project, modeled on the Festival of Lanterns. With the end of the Cold War in 1992, the local group continued in a dormant stage, finally disbanding in 1995. Records from the Physicians for Social Responsibility date from 1980-2001, with the bulk of the records dating from 1980-1992. They include historical materials, administrative files, financial materials, membership materials, programs and events. Materials from the Wisconsin Physicians for Social Responsibility, National Physicians for Social Responsibility and related organizations are also included.
