Lurie, Nancy Oestreich | Title: Nancy Oestreich Lurie Papers, 1947-1988 Quantity: .8 cubic ft. (2 boxes) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 50 Abstract: Personal papers of a former chair of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Department of Anthropology which includes extensive field notes, professional and personal correspondence, and photographs. The majority of the collection is field notes dealing primarily with Lurie's research of the Winnebago Indians of Wisconsin, particularly as a board member of the United Indians of Milwaukee (UIM), work with the Consolidated Tribes (a predecessor of UIM), and the Haylushka Society, an organization formed by non-Indians interested in Indian culture and life. Also included are proposals and field notes for the Milwaukee Urban Indian Research Project focusing on the effect of the urban plight of Native Americans children in Milwaukee. The field notes are detailed observations of encounters with Native Americans, such as board and general meetings of the United Indians of Milwaukee, American Indian Information and Action Group meetings, powwows, and informal gatherings. Several copies of the Moccasin Telegraph, a newsletter published by the United Indians of Milwaukee, edited by Lurie, also are included. |

The collection includes his brief diaries, 1856, 1861-1863, 1875-1888; topographical sketches and plans for dams at Neenah and Menasha, Wisconsin; surveys for the Wisconsin Midland Railroad and for the Homer and Manchester Railway in Michigan; contracts (1851) of the Rock River Valley Railroad Company; and personal financial records, including an account book (1905) kept by his son, Charles R. Boardman. |

Title: Nathan Crook Twining Papers, 1864, 1886-1917 Quantity: 0.2 c.f. (1 archives box) Call Number: Wis Mss CR Abstract: Papers consisting primarily of letters, 1886-1917, written by Admiral Nathan C. Twining, a native of Boscobel, Wisconsin, to his brother Clarence, referring mainly to family and budgetary matters. A few discuss public affairs in which the admiral was involved. Four letters to “Fritz” written between November 1886 and May 1887 comment on life at the Naval Academy, and contain comparisons with student life at the University of Wisconsin and in Monroe, Wisconsin. Also included is a single volume of a diary, 1864, kept by Twining's parents, Nathan Crook and Phoebe Ann Twining, which mainly details family life and personal events. |
Feinsinger, Nathan | Title: Nathan Feinsinger Papers, circa 1938-1966 Quantity: 4.0 c.f. (4 record center cartons) Call Number: M73-236 Abstract: Papers of Nathan Feinsinger, an arbitator, mediator, and government official in matters of wage determination and dispute settlements. The papers include a 1952 recommendation of the National Wage Stabilization Board (chaired by Feinsinger), and the ensuing steel strike; a 1946 steel strike in which Feinsinger chaired a presidential fact finding board; labor cases in which Feinsinger acted as an attorney for the Wisconsin Labor Relations Board; materials on General Motors-United Auto Workers grievances which he umpired; and a civil rights controversy involving the NAACP Youth Council of Milwaukee and the Fraternal Order of Eagles (1966) which he mediated. Also included are speeches, writings, and a small amount of correspondence. |

Papers contain information on missionary teaching in China in 1923, settlement work in Ashland with Eastern European refugees in the 1950s, college teaching in Lebanon in 1961-1962, Northland College, small business development work in the Ashland area, efforts to develop local products, community activities, religious talks and manuscripts, the Dexter family genealogy, and other topics. The collection contains political correspondence with representative James A. Frear; miscellaneous business papers including land titles, maps, mortgages, and financial records pertaining to his land and timber investments in Eau Claire and Clark counties; a few records relating to the Fairchild and Northwestern Railroad constructed by Foster in 1913; and a journal, 1908-1936, of the N.C. Foster Lumber Company. One folder contains land deeds and other business papers, 1830-1870, concerning Daniel Bread and the first Christian Party of the Oneida Nation of Indians. |

Tallmadge, a U.S. Senator from New York and Territorial Governor of Wisconsin. Included is political and family correspondence, speeches and writings, clippings, and reference materials on foreign relations and on banking and finance. Most of the letters were written to Tallmadge during his terms in the Senate and concern political matters such as his support of the United States Bank in opposition to Andrew Jackson and the enforcement of claims against France, 1834-1835. Numerous New York, Wisconsin, and national political leaders are represented in the correspondence. From 1841 to Tallmadge's appointment as Territorial Governor in 1844 there are letters from James D. Doty concerning land speculations, patronage, and politics. |

(19 archives boxes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss EP Abstract: Records of the Milwaukee branch reflecting particularly the work of Wilbur and Ardie A. Clark Halyard, prominent black community and business leaders. Founded in 1919, the Milwaukee branch was inactive between 1930 and 1949, but revived during the 1950s and 1960s. Much of the branch activity was directed towards fund raising and annual membership campaigns. Although the collection includes national, regional, state, and local records of the NAACP, the most extensive records are those documenting the Milwaukee branch's administrative committees and subject files. |

(21 archives boxes), 5 tape recordings, 7 photographs, and 2 negatives Call Number: Parkside Mss 66; PH Parkside Mss 66; Audio 1153A Abstract: Records of the Racine branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), dating mainly from the presidency of Julian Thomas (1964- ). Included are correspondence, activity files, and brief records on national and state NAACP events. There is also personal correspondence and notes of Thomas, mainly illustrating his work with other Racine civil rights and civic groups; as well as annual reports, membership records, minutes, newsletters and clippings, and reference files. The collection documents affirmative action and equal opportunity programs in Racine, school desegregation, open housing efforts, community action programs, and police community relations. There are also records of the Racine Environment Committee collected during Thomas's tenure on its board of directors, and a few papers from Thomas's minority relations work as an employee of the J.I. Case Company. National, regional, and state NAACP records primarily consist of records of conventions collected by Racine branch members who attended the meetings. Photographs include images of Thomas and other branch members. |

These records primarily document the informational clearinghouse function of the board and consist of correspondence files (mainly 1920-1950) of NABP secretaries H.C. Christensen and Patrick H. Costello. Also included are microfilmed examination questions from NABP sample exams and actual state board examinations, ca. 1915-1950. Although most NAB activities concern the establishment of broadcasting codes and support of the industry in matters relating to government regulation, the bulk of the collection pertains to the association's research function. The balance of the collection consists of files relating to the American Heritage Foundation's 1952 and 1956 Register and Vote promotion; John Meagher, NAB vice-president for radio, 1952-1955; a large group of broadcast editorials; and a file of miscellaneous publications. Also present is a videotape and audio tape of Lyndon B. Johnson's address to the 1968 convention. |

The NAEB traced its origins to the formation of the Association of College and University Broadcasting Stations in 1925. The largest part of the collection is a subject file which documents the NAEB's board of directors, committees, conventions, conferences, seminars, and workshops; the development of the Educational Television Facilities Act of 1962; projects funded through Title VII of the National Defense Education Act of 1958; a curriculum development project directed by Marshall McLuhan; programming material on such offerings as the series “Jeffersonian Heritage”; and files on the National Educational Television and Radio Center, the Fund for Adult Education, the Joint Committee on Educational Television, and other organizations and foundations interested in educational broadcasting. The NAEB disbanded in 1981. |

Correspondence to and from Wisconsin legislators and U.S. congressmen concerns such subjects as urban renewal, city public housing projects, divorce laws, health and welfare service bills, relief laws, curfew ordinances, and residence requirements for public assistance. The records document the professionalization of social work and the organization's advocacy role in issues relating to social welfare and include records from the national offices of the NASW as well as records from the Southeastern, South Central, Southwestern, and North Central Wisconsin Branches. The records consist of Chapter correspondence, meeting minutes, financial reports, committee reports, annual reports, newsletters, news clippings, and social action records. A significant portion of the collection consists of the files of the various executive directors of the Wisconsin Chapter. |

Coulee Region Chapter. | Title: National Audubon Society, Coulee Region Chapter Records Physical Description: 0.4 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 121 Abstract: The Coulee Region Audubon Society started out as the La Crosse Audubon Society in 1965. In late 1995 the group voted to become a chapter affiliated with the National Audubon Society and changed their name to the Coulee Region Audubon Society. The members wanted to gain more members, form partnerships with other chapters, create a wider scope, and focus attention on the Upper Mississippi River area. The group continues today. Records of the Coulee Region Audubon Society include a constitution and by-laws adopted circa 1965 by the La Crosse Audubon Society, general correspondence (1965-1988), correspondence with the National Audubon Society and the Wisconsin Audubon Council (1965-1987), a list of field trips (1965-1978), meeting meetings of the board (1965-1979) and with the membership (1965-1979), a few undated items from the membership committee, membership lists (1974-1986), newspaper clippings (1970-1981), and lastly treasurer’s reports (1979, 1982, 1988). |

Additionally, the organization aided communication between the nation's STD and AIDS service providers, and served as liaison between interested concerns such as the Centers for Disease Control, health organizations, pharmaceutical companies, publishers, and others. The collection includes copies of Sexual Health Reports (originally titled Official Newsletter of the NCGSTDS); correspondence of chair and editor Mark P. Behar including many requests for information; letters to the editor expressing support or hostility; and pamphlets and reports produced by NCGSTDS and others. NCGSTDS dissolved in 1988. |

The remainder of the collection pertains to the NCC's steering and standing committees, conferences sponsored by the NCC and other anti-war groups, reports of staff trips and meetings, and various projects such as the International Days of Protest. This section provides revealing, though by no means complete, information about internal operations and disputes. Also included are files of several conferences and staff meetings. |

(2 boxes) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 262 Abstract: Photocopies of newspaper clippings on various topics pertaining to Native Americans. The articles relate largely to Wisconsin issues, with particular emphasis on the controversy surrounding Chippewa (Ojibwa) spear fishing treaty rights during the late 1980s. The clippings date from 1978 to 1989, with the majority of articles dating 1985-1989. Most of the clippings were taken from the Milwaukee Journal, Milwaukee Sentinel, and the Ashland Daily Press, with some clippings from the New York Times, Washington Post, Green Bay Gazette, Chicago Tribune, UWM Post, Shepherd Express and USA Today.The compiler of these clippings is unknown. |
