| Emergency Committee to Defend the Human and Legal Rights of Political Prisoners | Title: Emergency Committee to Defend the Human and Legal Rights of Political Prisoners Records, 1985-1991 Quantity: 2.4 c.f., 8 videorecordings, and 7 tape recordings Call Number: M91-262 Abstract: Records of the Emergency Committee to Defend Human and Legal Rights of Political Prisoners, a support group for the Resistance Conspiracy Six (Alan Berkman, Tim Blunk, Marilyn Buck, Linda Evans, Susan Rosenberg, and Laura Whitehorn), all long-time political activists who were charged with conspiracy in connection with the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Capitol, a protest against the invasion of Grenada. Although the government admitted it had no evidence linking these specific people to the bombing, the six were convicted and sentenced to prison terms. The records document the Resistance Conspiracy case, the legal tactics used by the prosecution, the individuals involved and their philosophy, and the revolutionary network, especially the women’s and radical lesbian component of it. Included is correspondence, position papers, statements, flyers, programs, photographs, posters, original artwork, stickers, press kits, clippings, petitions, interviews with the six, and statements by other political prisoners. |

(8 archives boxes, 1 card box, and 1 record center carton), 3 reels of microfilm (35mm), 38 photographs, and 199 transparencies Call Number: Mss 874; PH Mss 874; Micro 2053 Abstract: Papers, 1898-1958, of Emerson Ela, a Madison, Wisconsin attorney and advocate of marketing cooperatives who was also associated with many civic organizations, and the personal papers of his wife, Florence White Ela. Included are biographical and autobiographical materials, personal and business correspondence, diaries and journals (chiefly of Florence Ela), household accounts, records of his early law practice, and subject files about the Madison Dry League, the Madison Planning Trust, the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, and other organizations. Most extensive are the files on Ela's chairmanship of the United War Work Campaign during World War I which include correspondence; a scrapbook documenting the work of Lee C. H. Orbach, state publicity director; additional clipping scrapbooks; and lantern slides issued by the national campaign to support its fundraising work. Records of the law practice include correspondence with clients such as Richard Lloyd Jones, Amos P. Wilder, and the Wisconsin State Journal, and speeches delivered in behalf of the Northern Wisconsin Cooperative Tobacco Pool. Other correspondents include Charles N. Gregory, Irvine Lenroot, and Verne Kaub. Photographs include images of Emerson Ela and Florence White Ela documenting their lives before and after their marriage. Included are images of Emerson in school at Rochester Academy, Beloit Academy, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Images of Florence include photographs from Beloit College and a scrapbook kept by Florence. |

(2 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 688 Abstract: Papers of Emil Schaefer, a former farm worker, teacher, and school principal who was active in Swiss-American groups in Wisconsin. The collection mainly concerns Schaefer's long involvement with the Swiss American Historical Society, and documents the activities of the Society during the Second World War and post-war years. Schaefer's correspondence files mainly concern official matters of the Swiss American Historical Society, and his personal friendships with many of the members. There is correspondence with Alfred Senn, Heinz K. Meier, and J. P. Von Grueningen, all officers of the Society; Lukas Burckhardt, the Swiss ambassador to the United States; and the Swiss Embassy and the Swiss Consulate in Chicago. A part of the correspondence is in German. Records of the Swiss American Historical Society consist of constitutions; lists of officers and members; annual reports of officers; announcements of meetings, projects, and publications; clippings; and a typescript history of the Society. There are also a few bulletins and other materials collected by Schaefer from Swiss government agencies. |

Includes drafts and a manuscript booklet on Seidel's defense of his 1910-1912 Socialist mayoral administration in Milwaukee; the first report of the strikers' aid committee organized during the strike against Cudahy Brothers Company and against the Illinois Steel Company in 1919; and information on the Socialists' view of World War I. |

(83 archives boxes, 2 card file boxes, 1 flat box, 1 oversize file), 1 reel of microfilm (35mm), 1 videorecording, 43 films, and 249 cans of film Call Number: U.S. Mss 117AN; Micro 988 Abstract: Papers, mainly 1950s-1980s, of Emile de Antonio, a documentary filmmaker whose work was characterized by critical exploration of themes in contemporary politics and society. Included are biographical information, correspondence, and extensive files on films produced or considered for production. Produced motion pictures are documented by correspondence, research material, legal and financial records, scripts, production notes, promotion and distribution information, and reviews. Although present in varying completeness, the documentation is excellent for America Is Hard to See (1970), a study of Eugene J. McCarthy's bid for the presidency in 1968; In the King of Prussia (1982), an account of the trial of members of the Plowshares Eight; In the Year of the Pig (1968), a historical view of the Vietnam War; Millhouse: A White Comedy (1971), a political biography of Richard M. Nixon; Painters Painting (1972), a study of contemporary American art and artists; Point of Order (1964), a study of the Army-McCarthy hearings; Rush to Judgment (1966), an investigation of the Warren Commission findings; and Underground (1976), interviews with fugitive members of the radical Weather Underground organization. Unproduced films include similar documentation of lesser extent. Of note are materials on Bertrand Russell, an interview with Frank Lloyd Wright by Mike Wallace, work on the lives of the Kennedy brothers, and an early chapter draft of Frances Fitzgerald's best selling book on Vietnam, Fire in the Lake. The collection includes correspondence with Catholic peace activists Daniel and Philip Berrigan; filmmakers Haskell Wexler, Mary Lampson, and Glenn Silber; writers Mitch Tuchman and Peter von Bagh; artist Kazuko Oshima; and New Yorker Films head Daniel Talbot. Also present are transcripts of interviews with actor Martin Sheen, artist Frank Stella, former FBI agent Wesley Swearingen, former CIA agent Philip Agee, and art world figures featured in the film Painters Painting. The remainder of the papers is comprised of personal and business correspondence; biographical clippings and articles; family papers; and a small group of files relating to various film and art societies and political organizations with which de Antonio was involved. Films include four of de Antonio's works and an additional 249 cans of negatives and trims. |

(1 archives box and 1 oversized volume) Call Number: Wis Mss AN Abstract: Correspondence consisting of letters written to Miss Blair's mother, Lucy Bartlett of Orono and Old Town, Maine, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by the latter's father, Thomas Bartlett, and young brother George, in which references are made to the Aroostook boundary dispute, the lumber business on the Canadian border, and preparations to depart for Wisconsin. There are a number of other family letters; Miss Blair's own correspondence, 1876-1910, chiefly relating to her professional work at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; and a few records of the Young Women's Christian Association of Milwaukee and other Milwaukee social service organizations. |

Emmert, before owning his own accounting firm called Emmert Tax and Accounting Service, was division chief of the U.S. Revenue Office in La Crosse, Wis. The collection includes a scattering of audits performed by the Emmert Tax and Accounting Service of La Crosse, Wisconsin, from 1922-1928, and 1934. Most of the audits are for the City of La Crosse government and schools. |

(5 archives boxes, 2 packages, and 1 oversize folder) and 1 tape recording Call Number: U.S. Mss 60AN; Audio 338A Abstract: Papers of Emmet Lavery, a stage, screen, and television writer, including scripts, collected articles and letters, clippings, Lavery-edited copies of The Screen Writer, and a subject file on Vassar College's Federal Theatre Project. Scripts present either in manuscript or mimeographed form relate to his stage, television, and film work. Most thoroughly documented is The Magnificent Yankee, his 1946 play based on the life of Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. The collection contains particularly useful information about the Hollywood film community and the Screen Writers Guild, which Lavery served as president, 1945-1947, and in which capacity he testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. |
