(6 archives boxes), 6 reels of microfilm (35mm), 4 tape recordings, and 123 photographs (1 archives box and 1 oversize folder) Call Number: Mss 523; Micro 801; Tape 814A; PH Mss 523; PH Mss 523 (3) Abstract: Papers of Daisy Bates, a civil rights activist who as a former head of the Arkansas NAACP was a leading figure in the desegregation of the Little Rock schools in 1957. Included in the collection are general correspondence, primarily relating to Mrs. Bates' speaking and writing; speeches and biographical statements; and microfilm copies of drafts of her 1962 memoir The Long Shadow of Little Rock. Also available on microfilm are clippings pertaining to Mrs. Bates, her husband, L. C. Bates (publisher of the Arkansas State Press), and the school desegregation crisis in general; research files on the nine students who integrated Central High School; and behavioral record cards of many Central High School students, 1955-1958. Records of the Arkansas and Little Rock NAACP chapter as kept by Mrs. Bates include legal documents, minutes, printed memos, financial statements, correspondence, transcripts of telephone conversations, and a discussion between NAACP officer Clarence Laws and the nine students. Tapes in the collection contain portions of an interview with Mrs. Bates, a general discussion of the situation in Little Rock, and a speech by Orval E. Faubus. The photographs document the activities of Mrs. Bates and her involvement in the desegregation of Central High School and subsequent related events from 1957-1960. Included are images of Mrs. Bates, L.C., the Little Rock Nine students, and others involved in the desegregation events. Additional images document the violence that occurred as a result of this effort. |

Included is a folder of information about George Elliot MacKinnon, a prominent local doctor. | Wasserman, Dale, 1917- | Title: Dale Wasserman Papers, 1946-1983 Quantity: 9.8 c.f. (1 record center carton, 22 archives boxes, 1 package) and 1 tape recording Call Number: U.S. Mss 67AN; Tape 1095A Abstract: Papers of Dale Wasserman, a playwright, screenwriter, and television dramatist. In the collection are scripts and drafts, many bearing informative annotations; correspondence; clippings; outlines; and production notes. Files from Wasserman's award-winning television writing, which primarily date from the 1950's, are most extensive for Armstrong Circle Theatre (CBS), The Citadel (ABC), Climax (CBS), Kraft Television Theatre (NBC), DuPont Show of the Month (CBS), and The Power and the Glory (CBS). Also from this period are materials on the teleplay “I, Don Quixote,” written for the DuPont Show of the Month, which Wasserman subsequently adapted for the Broadway stage as Man of La Mancha (1965). Extensive holdings on this production include unused lyrics by W. H. Auden. Also well represented among his stage plays is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1963), the records of which include a script annotated by Ken Kesey, author of the book of the same name. For Livin' the Life (1957), written with Bruce Geller, and Cafe Crown (1964) there are advertising posters and for The Wind Blows Free (1950), water color renderings of the sets are included. Film writing is represented by produced and unproduced titles, primarily Cleopatra (20th Century-Fox, 1963), The Vikings (UA, 1958), and Quick Before It Melts (MGM, 1965). |

The collection offers remarkably complete documentation of his work and the blacklisting to which he was subjected until 1960. It includes correspondence, writings, financial records, recordings, and subject files on HUAC and the Hollywood Ten. Correspondence, 1925-1962, includes letters to his wife and family concerning his experiences as a correspondent during World War II, his prison experiences in 1950 and 1951, as well as many letters to and from agents, playwrights, producers, and other members of the Ten. Numerous letters relate to the Congressional hearings, his work as a black market writer under assumed names during the 1950s, and his attitudes toward blacklisting. Among his correspondents are Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, E.Y. Harburg, John Huston, Gordon Kahn, Garson Kanin, Murray Kempton, Ring Lardner Jr., John Howard Lawson, Carey McWilliams, Albert Maltz, David Merrick, Dore Schary, Herman Shumlin, and Sam Zimbalist. Some correspondence is present only in dictated form. |

This series does not include unsolved homicides, and files from 1920 and later do not include any homicides. Each case is summarized in a coroner report which provides both pertinent information about the deceased and findings as to cause and date of death. Files on traffic deaths typically include traffic reports filed by the police. Files on deaths involving negligence, abuse, or foul-play typically include autopsy reports and inquest transcripts. Files on suicides include copies of suicide notes where applicable. In addition, news clippings and police photographs are present in some files. |

Included are annual reports to the State Board of Control, minutes of the board of trustees and the separate governing bodies under which the institution operated during its early history, minutes of the building committee responsible for constructions at the institution, patient and inmate registers containing biographical data and information on the causes of the patients' insanity and/or indigence, a narrative journal of E.P. Major topics represented in the collection include U.S. military bases in the Philippines, the Philippine anti-nuclear movement, and human rights. |

Blum Papers, circa 1860-1965 Quantity: 55 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 961; Micro 1077 Abstract: Scrapbooks kept by Daniel Blum, theatrical producer and publisher of Theatre World (1944-1965), Screen World (1950-1965), and Opera World (1952-1954). These microfilmed scrapbooks contain playbills, reviews, clippings, and obituaries of famous actors, actresses, and film and theater personalities. A small group of the scrapbooks concerns athletes, and another group contains “Autograms,” stars' answers to a few short questions posed by Blum. Most of the theatrical performances documented were for legitimate theater performances in New York City, though other cities are represented as are some revues and vaudeville productions. |

His activities with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and with the Weather Underground led to his arrest, after which he lived underground from 1970 to 1976. Included are diaries, his FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) files, collected subject files, and videotapes representative of his work. The earlier diaries mainly document his everyday life as a young gay man on the West Coast with few mentions of his life in hiding, while the 1988-1989 volume details the illness and death from AIDS of his companion. |

The collection includes personal correspondence, invitations and requests from charitable organizations, fan mail, and letters about Travanti's work with alcoholism recovery groups. Other personal papers include awards, and magazine and newspaper articles about Travanti and other members of the Hill Street Blues cast. There are also scripts and production files illustrating Travanti's acting career, among them materials from Hill Street Blues; the television movies and specials Adam: His Song Continues, Case of Libel, Here's Richard, (a special about fitness expert Richard Simmons), and Murrow, an HBO film about Edward R. (3 archives boxes and 1 small archives box) and 5 photographs (1 folder) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss Q; PH 535 Abstract: Assorted family and business papers of Wells, a Milwaukee railroad contractor and manufacturer of railroad bridges and equipment. In his varied enterprises Wells was associated with a number of Milwaukee and Chicago firms, including Wells and French; Wells and Chamberlain; Wells, Harrison, and Shute; and Wells, Harrison, and Greene. In a few family letters in the late 1840s Wells alluded very briefly to his interests in railroad construction in his native state of Vermont. Ledgers, letterpress books, 1877-1884, and other unbound correspondence and financial records contain references to work he did on railroad lines in Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Dakota Territory from the 1850s to 1884. Some letters contain references to his presidency of the Sheboygan and Fond du Lac Railroad, 1876-1879; his interest in promoting state legislation favorable to railroads; his investments in the Milwaukee newspaper Republican and News, in mining properties, and in real estate; and his speculations in the stock market. Miscellaneous family letters relate to Wells' wife, Helena Mary Lee, to their children, and to other members of the Lee and Wells families. | Murray, Daniel Alexander Payne, 1852-1925 | Title: Daniel Murray Papers, 1881-1955, 1966 Quantity: 27 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 577 Abstract: Papers of Danial Murray, a prominent Afro-American historian and bibliographer who worked at the Library of Congress between 1871 and 1922, and during his lifetime compiled an “Encyclopedia of the Colored Race.” Including over 25,000 biographical sketches and over 6000 titles of black-authored publications, the six-volume encyclopedia was never published. The papers include extensive correspondence, 1893-1925; notes and biographical sketches for the encyclopedia; materials documenting efforts to publish the encyclopedia; speeches and articles; business papers; programs and brochures; and family papers. The papers also document Murray's civic activities such as his work with the Colored American Council. Primary correspondents include Murray's wife, Anna Jane Evans Murray, and two sons, Daniel Evans Murray and George Henry Murray. |

The collection includes two account books kept during the years 1868-1889 by his father, Dr. P. S. MacArthur, who also practiced medicine in La Crosse. The records consist of letterpress books, seventeen of which contain company correspondence and two of which contain General Manager Eugene Shaw's personal correspondence. Also included are miscellaneous loose records consisting of timber “scale” books (winters 1866-1867); field books delineating timber stands on sections of land (1899, undated); and miscellaneous correspondence, business receipts, and legal documents (1861-1911). The microfilmed portion of this collection includes a daybook recording sales in a company store in 1881, and the record of the Eau Claire dynamo and the production of city electric lights, 1893-1894. |

Included are background information and a selection of the reports on media advertising effectiveness for which the firm is known. Background material consists of a brief history; several promotional items; an interrupted run of a monthly newsletter, Tested Copy, which provides highlights of Starch's research, 1938-1960; and his pamphlet, Measuring Product Sales Made by Advertising (1961). Reports divide into print and broadcast media; while the broadcasting reports focus on general audience characteristics, the magazine and newspaper sections examine reactions to specific publications such as Life and TV Guide. |

Of the three programs represented, coverage of “Abortion and the Law” is best. Present are a broadcast script, unedited tape transcripts of interviews with physicians and women who had illegal abortions, research material, photographs, and a posthumous book completed by Lowe's wife Harriett Van Horne based on the program. “Harvest of Shame,” which concerned the plight of migrant farm workers and which is considered a classic of the genre, is represented by two tape transcripts, a broadcast script, and 16 photographs taken during filming. For “Murder and the Right to Bear Arms,” there is only a final script. |

From his 1967 tour of Southeast Asia there are reports and briefings on meetings with foreign officials and U.S. military officers and photographs of street life and destruction in Hanoi and elsewhere in North Vietnam caused by American bombing. The remainder of the collection consists of personal correspondence, financial records, speeches and writings, scripts for David Schoenbrun Reporting, and research files that include photocopied documents about the French underground during World War II.
