The collection also includes substantial personal data on the individuals to whom it lent money and on the physical characteristics of the property it accepted as security. The records as a whole provide a detailed picture of the affairs of a financial institution of moderate size. They trace the company from its formation in 1905 through a period of expansion in the properous 1910's and 1920's, and are particularly strong in documenting the business's failure in the Depression, its reorganization, and the first years of the tedious liquidation process.

Quantity: 1.2 c.f. (4 archives boxes)
Call Number: U.S. Mss 99AN/3G
Abstract: Sundown was produced in 1941 by Walter Wanger Productions, Inc. When Wanger left United Artists, the production company was reorganized as United Artists Productions, Inc., and the unreleased picture, and its production files, became the property of United Artists. Because of these circumstances, this series contains the only production materials to be found in the United Artists Collection. There are extensive records relating to the on-location shooting of the picture at Acoma, New Mexico; Bronson Canyon, California and Crater Lake, Oregon, which give a clear picture of the problems and procedures involved in filming at remote locations. The actual shooting of the film is represented by scene-by-scene notes with scene numbers; short resumes of the action; wardrobe changes; essential props; cast and bit players; production notes; shooting schedules; and call sheets. Other facets of the production process are documented by such materials as camera reports, camp records, production notes, vouchers and set cost rundowns. A number of scripts, with various revisions, are also included.

The entries for the stockholder-producers (Chaplin, Fairbanks, Pickford, Selznick, Swanson) of the United Artists Corporation are particularly important in that they detail not only financial and contract information for individual films, but also the stockholders' interrelationships and negotiations with regard to the activities and fortunes of the corporation. United Artists Corporation Title: United Artists Corporation Records: Series 6B: Arthur W. Kelly Files, 1946-1951
Quantity: 5.0 c.f. (13 archives boxes)
Call Number: U.S. Mss 99AN/6B
Abstract: Files of the vice president in charge of foreign distribution documenting all aspects of foreign distribution of films. The immediate post-World War II period brought a boom in foreign distribution. But as foreign countries saw a flight of currency via film revenues, they soon instituted taxes, quotas, and currency export freezes that were designed to retain capital and to build up their indigenous film production industries. This situation was important to UA since the bulk of their actual profits came from abroad, particularly Great Britain. In this series, extensive correspondence with UA executives, producers, and producers' representatives discuss offers of films for distribution; contract interpretations and disputes; and the booking, dating, terms, playing, and collection of money for various films. There are also reports and statistics which relate to picture earnings, distribution problems, circuit deals, dubbing, travel, and other aspects of foreign distribution. Especially important is information relating to the J. Arthur Rank Organization and the Odeon Theatre interests which largely controlled access to theaters in Great Britain. Files on Germany provide insight into the Allied Occupation and later developments. Other notable materials include Motion Picture Association and Motion Picture Export Association minutes, reports, and correspondence; accounting and distribution figures; and information on currency restrictions.

The contracts are of two types: 1) contracts for literary rights, and 2) long term contracts between Warner Brothers and its stars, directors and technicians, and contracts for `loan-outs' between studios. Consequently, it is possible, for example, to trace the pay increases for stars, director and others over a period of time.

Quantity: 99 reels of microfilm (35mm)
Call Number: Micro 1070; U.S. Mss 99AN/8C
Abstract: Contract registers containing a record of the towns, theaters, dates, and prices (with occasional played and earned figures) for films exhibited between 1919 and1941. The contracts generally are recorded by exchange and thus enable easy comparison of films in different sections of the country. Originally, the volumes were created in three segments: 1919-October 1927, October 1927-April 1931, and 1937-1941. Volumes for May 1931-1937 and May 1941-1950 were lacking when the collection was received by the Historical Society. Volumes from 1919-1931 are handwritten originals, while those from 1937-1941 are corrected, typewritten and mimeographed copies of the handwritten originals. Many of the latter were created and filmed in reverse chronological order. The early original registers also contain brief notations with reference to theaters closing or changing hands, mention of cancelled showings or reduced rates, and occasional recordings of censored films. Occasionally contracts with higher numbers were arranged in a sequence preceding contracts with lower numbers. The production number listed in the Reel List was assigned by the production company.

United Artists Corporation Title: United Artists Corporation Records: Series 7C: Contract Control Cut-Off Ledgers and Registers, 1933-1951
Quantity: 43 reels of microfilm (35mm)
Call Number: Micro 1046; Micro 2030; U.S. Mss 99AN/7C
Abstract: These records detail film showings by exchange and by circuit. Summarized in the records are film titles, date played, guaranteed percentage or flat rate, number of days played, gross income, and earnings after expenses. Contract entries were made before a film was shown, while playing dates were added after the showing to indicate that films were “cut off.” In 1948 the ledger form of record keeping was apparently replaced by control cut-off forms. Holdings for this later period appear complete, while the earlier ledgers are somewhat miscellaneous in coverage, including data from theaters in Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia only. At the end of the registers are three separate files of cut-offs for Guilty of Treason, Red Shoes, and Sundowners. For the early ledgers the information also includes town populations, the exhibitor's name, production contract date, contract prices, production name, and other information for both feature films and short subjects.

Abstract: These volumes list a weekly summary of the earnings, by picture, of all United Artists releases. This weekly summary was taken directly or indirectly from the daily contract registers. These totals were then divided according to producer/corporation share, and the cumulative totals were transferred to the General Ledgers (Series 3C). Volumes for 1934, 1937, 1940, and 1947 were not received by the Historical Society with the rest of the series.

Thus, the Argentina office conducted business in Uruguay and Paraguay as well as in Argentina; the Puerto Rico office also did business in Aruba and Curacao, and so forth Detailed information as to the geographical scope of each office may be found in the description for the Foreign Accounts Section. The individual accounts encompass the entire range of activities of UA's foreign business, from capital stock to petty cash and from profit on currency exchange to producers' shares of played-and-earned income. Whenever funds were transferred from one account to another, an entry appeared in the ledgers. (Corresponding entries were made on a daily basis in foreign journals; unfortunately, these have not survived.) A list of the accounts recorded in a typical volume follows. Note that in most cases figures in the foreign ledgers are in local currencies, not U.S. dollars. Quantity: 18.0 c.f. (47 archives boxes)
Call Number: U.S. Mss 99AN/2F
Abstract: Correspondence, contracts, and other records (primarily 1940-1952) on the sale of film distribution rights to foreign clients, documenting distribution contracts from initial contact through subsequent contract enforcement. Foreign distribution was done in two basic ways: by UA or a subsidiary selling rights directly to exhibitors on an individual basis, or by the sale of licenses to other distribution organizations at a flat rate, with subsequent distribution performed by the licensee. Because UA's independent producers had input into the sale price and terms of the distribution agreements, full information on the foreign distribution negotiations were referred either to the home office in New York or to the major UA subsidiary in London for final approval; thus, the series contains extensive details on individual foreign distribution transactions. Also included are some non-distribution materials relating to foreign countries. For example, files on Bulgaria, 1931-1941, contain affidavits concerning UA's ownership of films in that country; files on French North Africa, 1945, concern salary adjustments; and files on Italy, 1950-1951, relate to the formation of a new UA foreign subsidiary.

There is often similar material on the corporations with which UA did business.); (3) contract information (contracts and related correspondence with producers, with executives of the corporation, and with other corporations); (4) distribution data; (5) financial and tax data; and (6) litigation including files on roducers' suits against the corporation over distribution rights or for moneys allegedly due, insight into the whole producer/distributor relationship, stockholders' suits against each other or the corporation in attempts to gain control of the company, tax suits, anti-trust actions brought by disgruntled exhibitors as well as by governmental bodies, and copyright suits for the prosecution of dishonest exhibitors. Abstract: Records of a voluntary fraternal association of Spanish-American War veterans dedicated to preserving the memory of their sacrifices and to promoting patriotism. Thus the records reflect, in a sense, the beginning of the end of the USWV, as one sees membership numbers declining and the number of members' obituaries increasing. This is especially apparent in the register of attendees for annual state encampments, which shows sharply declining numbers after 1950. Also included in this collection are departmental encampment proceedings, financial records, and some administrative papers. Some records pertain to local camps within the Department of Wisconsin; the records for the Herman J. Bartels Camp No. 39 (Marshfield) are particularly complete. The patriotic concerns of the United Spanish War Veterans are reflected by constant references to “Americanism” in their records and several flyers.
