Entertainment files, the largest portion of the collection, include scripts, correspondence, and production information for his work in radio, television, and motion pictures. Radio materials consist of scripts for Ed Sullivan Entertains (CBS), Summer Silver Theatre (CBS), and various other programs and benefits. More substantial television material relates primarily to the long-running Ed Sullivan Show (originally known as Toast of the Town, CBS). This section includes correspondence; scripts; production, sponsorship, and financial information; clippings; ratings; and films. Also here is a script for a Friars Club “roast” of Johnny Carson and a script for the movie Singing Nun (MGM, 1966) in which Sullivan appeared. Writings include miscellaneous newspaper and magazine articles; copies of his “Little Old New York” column, 1941-1974, for the New York Daily News; and an unpublished biography of Lee Shubert. General subject files contain awards, certificates, correspondence, clippings, legal records, microfilmed scrapbooks, and speeches. Among the prominent correspondents are Steve Allen, Rudolf Bing, Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Duke Ellington, J. Edgar Hoover, Lady Bird Johnson, Edward M. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, Louis Nizer, Ronald Reagan, Don Rickles, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Richard Rodgers, Robert E. | Sumner, John Saxton, 1876-circa 1962 | Title: John Saxton Sumner Papers, 1904-1961 Quantity: 1.6 c.f. (4 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 146 Abstract: Papers of John Saxton Sumner, executive secretary for the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, renamed in 1946 the Society to Maintain Public Decency; including fragmentary correspondence, monthly summary reports, a diary, writings, memorabilia, an unpublished autobiography, clippings, and other records and reference files. Sumner's efforts were directed primarily against publications and theater performances of obscene and pornographic works. Correspondents include Anthony Comstock and Cleveland F. Pratt of the Society. Though most of Sumner's activity centered on the suppression of underground literature, there are reports about cases against Theodore Dreiser's The Genius, Louis Minsky and his burlesque performances, and Mae West. In Sumner's autobiographical manuscript and in letters to him are detailed descriptions of the influenza epidemic of 1918. |

(24 volumes) Call Number: Draper Mss VV Abstract: Papers of and about Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina merchant, military officer, and Congressional representative and senator; about the men who served under his command during the American Revolution; and their British and Loyalist opponents. Most of the volumes contain the notes Draper made on his 1871 trip to the South. The notes document the soldiers, their families, events of the period, anecdotes, and personal reminiscences from descendants. Included are notes, correspondence, newspaper and periodical articles, pension statements, interviews, and plans and negotiations with the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Indians. |

(8 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 1023 Abstract: Records, 1922-2004 (bulk 1990s-early 2000s), of Sunburst, Inc., a non-profit childcare agency affiliated with the United Church of Christ (UCC). It was founded in 1920 as the Winnebago Mission School but by the 1950s was known as the Winnebago Children's Home and in 1973 changed its name to Sunburst, Inc. The agency consisted of three branches: Sunburst Youth Homes (SBYH), Sunburst Family Services (SFS), and the Sunburst Foundation. The records primarily document the administrative actions of the Board of Directors and the interaction between the board and the three subordinate branches from 1990 to 2002, as well as the closure of SBYH in 2001 and the subsequent foreclosure and lawsuit brought against SBYH by the Bank of Withee. |

(2 archives boxes) Call Number: Superior Mss D Abstract: Records of the Board of Underwriters, an organization of Superior area fire and casualty insurance agents established to maintain equitable insurance rates. Included are proceedings, correspondence, financial records, and administrative materials including information on rates and insurance law. Much of the correspondence concerns the activities of Robert B. Nye, and the ouster of Charles A. Erhart in 1918. The Board was originally known as the Superior Fire Underwriters Association. |

Dating primarily 1965-1975, the records include files from the athletic committee, the community development/tourism committee, the Retail Division, the programs Project P.R.O.U.D. and Task Force for Jobs, and numerous other committees. Subject files concern topics such as economic statistics, St. Lawrence Seaway development, environmental action programs, and area development. Predecessors were the Superior Association of Commerce founded in 1894, and the original Superior Chamber of Commerce (also known as the East End Chamber of Commerce), which incorporated in 1883 and relinquished its name and certain records to the Association in 1967. |

(6 archives boxes) Call Number: Superior Mss AG Abstract: Records of the Superior Rotary Club, Wisconsin's first Rotary organization, illustrating the activities of local businessmen in Superior promoting ethical practices in business, increased civic development, and improved public welfare. The records consist of the club's constitution and bylaws, membership rosters, meeting minutes, and newsletters. The records also document the group's community activities and their involvement in issues of local, national and international importance. The club's correspondence and committee reports illustrate the promotion of local agriculture and support of work programs for boys, the Boy Scouts, and student exchange programs among other projects. |

| Superior Woman's Club (Wis.) | Title: Superior Woman's Club Records, 1909-1994 Quantity: 11.8 c.f. (10 archives boxes and 9 record center cartons) and 56 photographs (4 folders) Call Number: Superior Mss X; PH Superior Mss X Abstract: Records of a club founded in 1893 “to promote the moral and intellectual development of its members.” Originally called the Women's Club of West Superior (often referred to as the Ladies' Literary Club), the organization changed its name to the Superior Woman's Club in 1926. Until World War II the members focused on projects, issues, and topics traditionally associated with the woman's sphere: home hygiene, domestic economy, infant care, etc. After the war years, club activities focused on major projects to benefit the community, such as founding the Djordje Kostic Institute for Audio-Linguistic Studies. The collection includes minutes, financial and membership records, extensive scrapbooks documenting club activities and community improvement projects, photographs, historical information, the constitution and bylaws, and incorporation information. There are also brief records of the Djordje Kostic Institute. |

(172 archives boxes) Call Number: U.S. Mss 73AN Abstract: Papers of David Susskind, a producer, television host, and co-founder/president of the production company, Talent Associates, Ltd. Arranged as alphabetically-ordered subject files, the collection contains a wide variety of material such as correspondence, scripts and drafts, production information, clippings, financial records, and legal material. Much of the collection relates to the award winning dramatic anthologies and television series with which Susskind was associated. It provides a thorough picture of the business operations of Talent Associates as well as information on Susskind's personal activities and his opinions and interest in the television industry, politics, and events of topical interest. Coverage is best for the series Armstrong Circle Theatre (CBS), The David Susskind Show (Syndicated), DuPont Show of the Month (CBS, East Side/West Side (CBS), Mr. Broadway (CBS), N.Y.P.D. (ABC), Open End (Syndicated), Special Tonight (CBS), Way Out (CBS), and Witness (CBS), and for dramatic specials. Also included are files on Susskind's Broadway productions and motion pictures such as All the Way Home (Paramount, 1963), Raisin in the Sun (Columbia, 1961) and Requiem for a Heavyweight (Columbia, 1962). The collection includes extensive correspondence with prominent individuals in the motion picture and the television industries and in politics and government. It also contains transcripts of several news or interview programs which featured guests such as Marlon Brando, Hubert Humphrey, George Meany, Ambassador Menshikov of the Soviet Union and Bertrand Russell. |
