Abstract: Selected items from the papers of Henry Hastings Sibley, Minnesota's first governor, during his years as a fur trader, consisting primarily of correspondence among the various American Fur Company agents located in the Wisconsin Territory. Correspondence concerns internal company business; business with Hudson Bay Fur Company; company agreements with the Dakota Indians; company interest in United States government treaties with the Dakota, Ojibwa, and Winnebago Indians; attempts by the company to prevent war between the Dakota and the Sauk and Fox Indians; relations with missionaries to the Indians of the region; and company disputes with Indian agents Henry R. Schoolcraft and Lawrence Taliaferro. Correspondents prominent in the early history of Minnesota and Wisconsin include William Aitken, Frederick Ayer, Alexis Bailly, Bernard Brisbois, Ramsay Crooks, Henry Dodge, James Doty, Hercules Dousman, Jean Faribault, Alexander Faribault, Joseph Nicollet, Henry Rice, Joseph Rolette, Henry Schoolcraft, Lawrence Taliaferro, and Lyman Warren.

Abstract: Records of the Sierra Club Upper Mississippi River Task Force, an environmental group organized by local Sierra Club chapters in response to perceived inadequacies of H.R. 10529, a bill sponsoring a National Recreation Area in the Upper Mississippi River Valley. The correspondence includes letters between Task Force members and from other interested parties to the Task Force. Subject files contain correspondence, reports, studies, surveys, minutes, memos, proposed legislation, meeting notices, and pamphlets of the Task Force and other environmental and non-environmental groups involved with the same issues. The collection also contains correspondence and subject files concerning the St. Croix River inclusion in the National Scenic and Wild River System, and other Mississippi River environmental issues.

Abstract: Oral history interview conducted December 11, 1981 and March 1, 1982 by Dale E. Treleven of the Historical Society staff with David Sigman at Shorewood, Wisconsin and Laguna Hills, California. Sigman was the AFL regional director, 1937-1944, and co-author of Wisconsin's first labor relations act while a three-term Progressive assemblyman in the 1930s. This interview is part of the Wisconsin Labor Oral History Project.

Abstract: Correspondence, recorded reminiscences, and personal campaign materials of Samuel Sigman, district attorney of Outagamie County, Wis., 1935-1936, and a leader and organizer in the Wisconsin Progressive movement. The papers reflect the growth and decline of the Progressive party in the 1920s and 1930s and include correspondence from numerous political and labor leaders. The collection also contains business papers of other organizations with which Sigman was affiliated, including the Appleton Labor College, the Appleton Trades and Labor Council, the Fox River Valley Home Merchants Association, and the Wisconsin Federation of Commercial Fishermen.

Abstract: Papers of a professor of history at the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee including correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, and a small quantity of administrative and biographical materials. The papers document Silveus' career at the college from 1937 through 1958 and her historical research interests. The correspondence comprises the majority of the collection and consists of letters from Silveus' acquaintances, faculty of the college's History Department, and professional associates and organizations. Also included are letters to Silveus from U.S. servicemen during World War II, many of whom had attended the college before entering the armed services. The collection contains several unpublished manuscripts which document Silveus' historical research interests, including An American Learns to Enjoy Art (1958), Christopher Columbus (1937), Foreign Elements in Pennsylvania in the Eighteenth Century (1926), National Societies and Conventions in the Years 1850, 1860 and 1870 (1938), and The Election of 1800 in Pennsylvania (1926).

Abstract: Papers of Algie M. Simons and his wife May Wood Simons, both Wisconsin-born journalists, authors, and socialists, documenting lecture tours and socialist gatherings in the United States and abroad, and their editorial work on the staff of the Chicago Daily Socialist and the Milwaukee Leader. Among prominent correspondents in the collection are J. Ramsay MacDonald, Upton Sinclair, and William English Walling. Also documented is Simons' work (1931-1950) for the American Medical Association, including copies of his articles on medical economics.

Abstract: Miscellaneous designs of Lee Simonson, a noted Broadway stage designer and co-founder of the Theatre Guild. Included are three posters for Guild productions at the Garrick Theatre and original watercolor renderings and pencil sketches of stage designs, costumes, and hairstyles. The costume designs for a production of Jane Eyre, which did not open on Broadway, bear extensive notes and some fabric swatches.

Abstract: Papers of Alexander Simplot, Civil War artist, including manuscript notes for an article on the war written in 1899, two notebooks, a scrapbook of clippings, and drawings. The drawings document pre-Civil War and Civil War activities in Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee and include drawings of towns, camps, troops, and battles. Also included are several maps made by Simplot. The maps and drawings may have been done for Harper's Weekly magazine.

Abstract: Typescript copies of short-entry diaries, 1857, 1862-1863, 1866-1867, and 1870-1871, of John H. Simpson, a Civil War chaplain of South Carolina troops, especially the 6th, 17th, and 23rd regiments. Includes descriptions of the battles of Seven Pines (Fair Oaks), Gaines Mill, and Malvern Hill; camp life and Simpson's work on behalf of the soldiers; Southern attitudes towards Reconstruction, Radical Republicans, President Johnson, and the 4th of July; daily life, including music and reading, his courtship and marriage, and his 24-year pastorate of the New Lebanon Church, Greenbriar Synod of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Monroe County, West Virginia; and his brother Isaiah's dental practice. Lists of Civil War songs and personal expense records are also present.

Abstract: Sims was employed as Administrator of La Crosse Lutheran Hospital from 1938 to 1971. Lutheran Hospital is now called Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. The papers contain an expanded version of Sims’ book, the History of La Crosse Lutheran Hospital and copy positives of the photographs used in the book.

Abstract: Records of Sinai Samaritan Medical Center and its predecessor institutions, Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, Evangelical Deaconess School of Nursing, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse, Milwaukee Hospital, the Milwaukee Lutheran Hospital, the Milwaukee Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. Most of the records are from the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital and the Milwaukee Hospital; each of these series include annual, department, and statistical reports, property records, news clippings, and staff newsletters. The collection contains an extensive number of visual materials (photographs and lantern slides) of buildings, staff, and facilities dating from the 1878 through the 1990s. The collection also contains records of the auxiliaries include minutes of meetings, newsletters, and photographs. The records of the schools of nursing include commencement programs, yearbooks, student records, photographs, class notes of students, and alumnae newsletters.

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee Journal reporter. Organized as subject files, the papers include correspondence, clippings, and notes. Much of the material was gathered during the preparation of Blue Cross in Wisconsin published in 1964. Sinclair's articles on the plight of World War II veterans, which were instrumental in the passage of the G.I. Bill, are represented by copies of several speeches he made on the subject, though there are no notes nor correspondence relating to the topic. Other subjects documented are automobiles and public utilities.

Abstract: Records of the sewing-machine manufacturing company founded by Isaac M. Singer in 1851. The processed portion of the collection consists mainly of nineteenth century records, a large quantity of which is available only on microfilm. Included are historical materials, incorporation records, outgoing and incoming administrative correspondence, advertising materials and publications, subject files, and legal and financial records. The outgoing correspondence (primarily 1877 to 1924) covers many aspects of the company's business and includes letters dating from the presidencies of George McKenzie, Frederick G. Bourne, and Douglas Alexander that concern domestic and foreign management policy and routine administrative matters. Legal records and correspondence, 1846-1906, pertain to patents, litigation, and contracts. Subject files include circular letters; examiners' reports on company problems; and traveling notebooks of company executives. There are also extensive files about losses experienced in Russia following the 1917 Revolution, in Central Europe during the 1930's and 1940's, and in Japan and Germany during World War II. A large quantity of nineteenth century financial records, the majority of which are available only on microfilm, pertain to overall financial operations as monitored by the New York City office and to the operations at the Elizabethport, N.J. factory. A few records and letterbooks relate to subsidiary companies or companies acquired by Singer such as the Wheeler and Wilson Company, the Morley Sewing Machine Company, and the National Machine Company.

Abstract: Records of the Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity (SHN), an Episcopal women's order based in Boston, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; and after 1905 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, working primarily with parish education, including Sunday school and parochial school, as well as with emergency and routine relief work. The records include general correspondence from the first forty years of the order's existence, pertaining to the founding of the order, relations with other church bodies, activities of scattered missions, and rules and regulations. The bulk of the collection is made up of diaries with entries pertaining to the members' activities such as attending mass, travel, routine chores, acceptance of new postulants, matters of concern to friends and acquaintances of the sisters, and retreats. A portion of the diaries contains similar information pertaining to activities at the Mission House on the Oneida Indian Reservation in Brown and Outagamie counties, Wisconsin, 1926-1935, 1943-1944.

Abstract: Diaries and transcripts of William Bramwell Sizer that detail his life as a Milwaukee police officer and a husband in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The early diaries describe Sizer's early career as a police officer which began in 1889 and include police calls and court appearances describing the types of petty crimes that occurred in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Milwaukee. Sizer's later diaries primarily record the weather and his daily activities at home. Also included are his obituary, letters, and clippings that detail Sizer's career and a family genealogy.
