Abstract: Minutes of the Additional Court (created by an 1823 act of Congress for Brown, Crawford, and Michilmackinac counties, Michigan Territory) when seated in Prairie du Chien and Mineral Point. This court had concurrent civil and criminal jurisdiction with the Michigan Territory Supreme Court and was conducted by Judges James Doty (1824-32) and David Irvin (1832-36). Records include: copies of Doty's and Irvin's letters of appointment; decisions on the granting of tavern and ferry permits; naturalization oaths; and trial records. Trial records include names of plaintiffs, defendants, petit and grand jurors, and attorneys; charges; motions; and verdicts. Crimes include murder, assault, fornication, adultery, illegal sale of liquor and army uniforms, larceny, contempt of court, and trespassing. A copy of a letter from Michigan Territorial Governor Lewis Bass giving Judge Doty permission to try several Winnebago Indians indicted for murder is also included.

Abstract: Partially processed personal and professional papers of a broadcasting executive and journalism educator. Professional papers include subject files and correspondence amassed during Mickelson's employment with CBS News (1943-1961), Time-Life Broadcast, Inc. (1961-1973), and the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University (1973-1975). Personal papers consist of correspondence about his book The Electric Mirror: Politics in an Age of Television (1972) and speeches, articles, and subject files relating to the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, the International Broadcast Institute, the National News Council, and communication satellites.

Abstract: Photographs and papers of the Middleton family made by Clara (Case) Middleton, her husband William Elwell, and her son Forest, circa 1892–1920. The majority of the images document the Middleton family in and around their apartment on 22 East Mifflin Street in Madison, Wisconsin but also include images of the extended Middleton family; members of the Gunsolus family, Clara's relatives; and friends of Forest from his childhood and his time at college. Images in the collection also document Madison, including the Wisconsin State Capitol, Capitol Square, public buildings and businesses, churches, residences, Tenney Park, Lakes Mendota and Monona, and buildings and grounds on the University of Wisconsin campus. There are also images of Middleton family pets, some of which show the pets dressed in human clothes. The papers include documentation of Clara's second prize win in 1908 for a photo contest celebrating the founding of the University of Wisconsin and an article she wrote that year entitled “Amateur Photography in a Flat.” A typed transcript of references from Forest Middleton's diary to photographs in the collection is also included.

Abstract: Records of a group of Milwaukee residents and businessmen interested in rehabilitation and preservation of older neighborhoods, together with incomplete papers on several organizations with which MTNA cooperated. Administrative records include articles of incorporation and by-laws; minutes, memoranda, and membership records of the executive board; minutes of the general membership meetings; and lists of members. Extensive correspondence, primarily of MTNA official Father John Baumgartner, is present, but committee files and financial records are fragmentary. An interrupted run of MTNA's two newsletters is also included. Records of other organizations and programs represent the Midtown Conservation Project, a controversial urban renewal program; Milwaukee Alliance of Concerned Citizens; Westside Action Coalition; and Midtown Clergy.

The collection documents activities of this regional archival association, particularly issues of concern, such as the appointment of the Archivist of the United States, developments in the field of archives, and the organization's bi-annual meetings. Also included are documents such as memos and announcements relating to staffing, budget and other administrative functions.

Abstract: Still images pertaining to the service John Mierow, an Augusta, Wisconsin resident who served with the military police in the 1993rd Airways and Air Communication Service Squadron during the Korean War. The collection include both black and white and color photographs, color slides, and color negatives taken by Mierow while he was stationed in South Korea showing airbases, aircraft, and destruction from the war. The airbases include K-13 at Suwon, K-14 at Kimpo, K-16 at Seoul, K-46 at Hoengseong/Wonju, and K-55 at Osan. The majority of images were taken while Mierow was stationed at K-46 Airbase. Included are images of the 1993rd AACS auxiliary site, tents used by Mierow and other servicemen while stationed at the base, various squadron headquarters, and Mierow posing at machine gun posts. Also included are images of F-51 Mustangs, both on the ground and in flight, from the 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing stationed at the base. Of particular interest are several images taken of South African F-51's also stationed at the base. Images taken at K-13 show the bombing range and include F4U Corsairs and an F-80 Shooting Star on bombing runs and a helicopter taking off to partake in an offshore rescue. Other documented aircraft include B-29 Superfortresses at Suwon, F-86 Sabres stationed at Kimpo, and C-46, C-118, C-119, and C-124 cargo planes stationed at Seoul. Images taken at Osan show the construction of K-55 and the location of the 1993rd AACS auxiliary site. Mierow also took images of the 1st Shoran Beacon Squadron stationed at Seoul, and recorded some of the destruction throughout the city. Also included in the collection is a scrapbook of scanned prints taken from photographs and slides in the collection that was apparently used in an exhibit for another museum. Three photographs in the collection show parts of this exhibit. Photocopies of the scrapbook pages are included in the collection for preservation purposes. The color negatives are of identified color photographs in the collection and are of F-51 Mustangs stationed at K-46.

Abstract: Records of the Mifflin Street Community Cooperative, a cooperative grocery store which was organized in 1969 and ceased operation in 2006. The records include a detailed history of the early years of the co-op and documentation from other area food cooperatives. Also included are photographs, drawings, and ephemera documenting individuals involved with the store, advertising, the building, its mural, remodel (1993), historical displays, and neighborhood events such as the Mifflin Street Block Party, which the co-op sponsored from 1968-1991.

Abstract: Photographs taken by various members of the Millane family, including churches, homes, mineral springs, parks, public buildings, and street scenes in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Also includes photographs of members of the 5th Wisconsin Civil War infantry regiment, the departure of Company A, 4th Wisconsin Infantry for the Spanish-American War, and their reunion in 1908. The photographs are copies of the originals which are still held by the family.

Abstract: Papers of a woman who lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in the 1870s. The collection consists largely of letters, written principally by Ellen Spaulding Miller to family members who probably lived in New York. The letters reflect domestic life, family relationships, economic conditions, lumbering, religious revivals, and health conditions in the lumbering capital of northwestern Wisconsin. The Spaulding papers also include the booklet The Christian Minister's Affectionate Advice to a Married Couple (circa 1863), eight issues of Every Child's Paper - a children's Sunday School paper, and two photographs of Jefferson Miller, Ellen Miller's husband.

Included are plans of the town, histories of its planning, photocopy of a scrapbook of news clippings and press releases, pamphlets advertising the town, and community newsletters. The photographs and negatives document the early history of Greendale. Included are images of recreational activities, parades, celebrations, public buildings, business, schools, utilities, and maintenance vehicles.

Abstract: Papers of Willis Miller, a northwestern Wisconsin editor-publisher, local historian, and genealogist. Included are correspondence, diaries, memoranda, genealogical materials, minutes, newsclippings, and scrapbooks. Financial records for the “Hudson Star-Observer,” the “Hammond News,” and the Publishers Printing Service; family papers of Miller's parents and grandparents; and material relating to the Hudson, Wisconsin, area also are present. Most prominent among the materials on Hudson history are papers concerning the Hudson Toll Bridge, 1909-1917, documents on the Hudson Housing Authority, 1967-1979, and records of the St. Croix County Historical Society, 1945-1971. The correspondence contains exchanges with friends and relatives, business acquaintances, persons sharing genealogical information, letters to the editor, and people encountered in Miller's world travels. Included are letters on St. Olaf College, from people in military service and from Europeans and Americans abroad during World War II, and an extensive series of letters from prison inmates, 1960-1980. Also included are diaries written by Miller and his father Theodeus Kane Miller depicting brief descriptions of weather, friends' visits, and daily life, 1925-1926, 1981-1994.

Abstract: Papers of Winston Miller, a screenwriter and television writer-producer, consisting primarily of scripts, some supplementary notes and production material, and an interview. Of Miller's many film credits, there are 15 scripts from Republic's Dick Tracy series, numerous scripts for westerns made during the 1940s such as My Darling Clementine (20th Century Fox, 1946), and a shooting script for Gone With the Wind (MGM, 1939). Television scripts are the largest part of the collection. Here the earlier materials are also in the western genre and include files for Cimarron City (CBS), Gunsmoke (CBS), Rawhide (CBS), The Virginian (NBC), Wagon Train (NBC), and other series. Later in his career Miller turned to producing, and the collection contains extensive files on two such credits: Ironside (NBC) and The Bold Ones (NBC).

Abstract: Videocassette copies of motion picture footage shot by Eugene Millmann of events in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as a few other locations, mostly dating from the 1920s to the 1930s. The collection contains twenty-six separate clips, including the 1927 Milwaukee parades for aviators Charles Lindbergh and Lester Maitland, the Washington Park Zoo, Milwaukee's 75th and 100th anniversary parades, the 1951 visit of Douglas MacArthur, and the Muirdale Sanitorium. The footage totals 77 minutes in length, is in both black and white and color, and contains no sound. The footage was originally on 16 mm film.

Abstract: Papers of Joe Mills, a conservationist and chairman of the Wild Rivers Committee of the Sierra Club’s John Muir Chapter, concerning the passage in 1968 of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, which pertained to three rivers in Wisconsin: the Wolf, St. Croix, and Namekagon. The papers also reflect Mills' personal outdoor ethic and his passionate argument for the preservation of wilderness. Reference files contain material on wild rivers in several states.

Abstract: Records of the Milton Society of America, officially organized in 1948 to promote the advancement of scholarship on John Milton and his works. A nearly complete sequence of annual dinner and meeting programs, as well as the Milton Evening booklets which preceded them, document the society's main function, which was to bring together and honor scholars in the field, The correspondence primarily relates to the planning of the dinner and the gathering of Milton-related works for the society's library. The annual James Holly Hanford award for the best book and for the best article related to Milton is an ongoing function of the society for which it receives submissions. The collection also includes the Seventeenth Century News, the official organ of the Milton Society of America, from 1942 to 1988 with only occasional missing issues. This publication highlights recent Milton scholarship and also includes The Neo-Latin News beginning in 1954.

Abstract: Papers of James G. Milward, a member of the University of Wisconsin Department of Horticulture and potato extension specialist who led the development of the potato industry in Wisconsin for over 50 years. Included are correspondence, reports, notes, speeches and writings, an oral history, subject files, educational material, and financial records concerning his wide-ranging activities. The documentation covers seed certification, field trial demonstrations, research, marketing, and improved production. Particularly extensive are the files on the Wisconsin Potato Growers Association, of which he was secretary for many years, and the annual reports and work plans for the Smith-Lever Act, which he directed in Wisconsin. All files except the student notes and teaching materials are available only on microfilm.

Abstract: This collection contains a general journal (1883-1894) and a general ledger (1883-1894) from the Milwaukee Brewers' Association. These volumes document the close relationship between several Milwaukee brewery owners, who committed to their community through philanthropic donations to local charities benefiting the poor or ill. They also gave money to religious, political, cultural, and educational organizations. Some of the more popular recipients included Turnverein Vorwaerts, Liegel, Milwaukee Infants House, St. Rosa's Orphanage, the Thirteenth Ward Catholic Church, and the Working People's Reading Club.

Included are administrative subject files consisting of financial, personnel, and meeting records, and an assortment of materials created and accumulated by Reverend Kenneth L. Smith. Also included are operations and activities subject files which document neighborhood development, missionary and charity work, the “Project 61” relocation campaign, youth leadership and camp activities, and community affiliations. Abstract: Records of a Milwaukee organization originally formed in 1960 to support the civil rights movement in the South, but which ultimately turned its attention to the problems of local housing discrimination and school segregation. Included are correspondence, minutes, newsletters, and miscellaneous papers. Also present are materials on involvements with groups such as the Citizens Committee for Fair Housing Practices, with which the MCEO ultimately merged; the Milwaukee Urban League; the Wisconsin Citizens for Fair Housing Practices; the Milwaukee Area Joint Committee for Equal Opportunity in Housing; and the Milwaukee Commission on Community Relations.

Abstract: Records of the CIO-affiliated council which was formed in 1938. Records consist of meeting minutes, trial committee records, resolutions, correspondence with the membership and other organizations, financial records, attendance records, and newsletters and reports of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and the Wisconsin State Industrial Union Council. Included are World War II materials from the Milwaukee County Council of Defense, and resolutions condemning Nazism and demanding the start of a second front. The correspondence includes documentation on efforts to promote more housing in Milwaukee County, and a confidential memorandum on differences between the MCIUC and Wisconsin State Industrial Union Council (November 18, 1947), which discussed charges of Communist influence and improper representation of Local 1533 at Fairbanks, Morse and Company. There are some materials on the United Electrical, Radio 8 Machine Workers Local 1111 strike against the Allen-Bradley Company (1938-39) and the United Auto Workers Local 248 strike against the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company (1946).

Abstract: Scrapbooks of the Milwaukee Does, a women's professional basketball team affiliated with the Women's Basketball League (WBL) consisting of news clippings and photographs. As one of the first professional female sports teams, the Does were seldom taken seriously by the general public, and these attitudes were exacerbated by the team's consistently poor performance on the court. In the summer of 1980, in an effort to improve their image, they developed a new logo and renamed the team the Milwaukee Express. However, the team was disbanded before the 1980-1981 season. The clippings highlight the team's struggles to be competitive while the photographs consist of snapshots of various games in which they played.

Abstract: Records of the Milwaukee Grain Exchange, one of the chief national markets for the trading and inspection of grain, which was closely linked with the early commercial history of Milwaukee. Also included are records of its forerunners, the Milwaukee Board of Trade, Milwaukee Corn Exchange, Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, and the Milwaukee Grain and Stock Exchange. The records consist of charters and amendments, constitutions, rules, minutes, annual reports, committee and gratuity fund records, correspondence, financial and payroll records, grain shipping records, grain storage applications, inspection and weighing department figures, legal files and correspondence, membership records, and scrapbooks and memorabilia. On microfilm are minutes of the general meetings (1875-1917) and of the board of directors (1860-1906). Also present is a stock transaction book from the Ontario and Erie Ship Canal Company. The photographs show officers and other members of the grain exchange and interior scenes including the trading floor, offices, and sample tables.

Abstract: Records of a federally funded project conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) to promote the humanities to the general public, largely compiled or created by Frederick I. Olson, last executive director of the program. The collection contains accounting, budget, and other financial records; correspondence files; and grant files concerning the National Endowments for the Humanities (NEH). The correspondence files contain letters to and from the executive director with NEH and UWM officials, and Milwaukee's historical community documenting program funding and activities. The community board's meeting files contain minutes documenting its focus on NEH funding, project development, bylaws, and budget reports. The minutes provide insight into the objectives of the program and the role of board members. The program's oral history and film projects, which focused on the history of Milwaukee's people, products, and geographic areas are well documented in the collection.

The Women's Aid Society (1924-1962), the Ladies' Auxiliary (1930-1962), and the Women's Service League (1956-1968), the Women's Auxiliary and Aid (1962-1970), and the Women's Service Auxiliary (1970- ) were established to serve residents and help finance, operate, and maintain the home. Abstract: Materials pertaining to the Milwaukee radio and television stations owned by the Journal Company (now Journal Communications, Inc.). The stations operated for many years under the call letters WTMJ. The paper records include scripts for editorials read on radio and television, audience surveys, photographs, promotional materials, scripts for newscasts, as well as materials pertaining to the personnel, history, and operation of the radio and television stations. The approximately 2 million feet of 16 mm newsfilm is the original edited footage used on the air to illustrate news stories from 1950 to 1980. The collection includes footage of the Milwaukee Braves; the civil rights movement in Milwaukee during the 1960s; local businesses such as Allis-Chalmers, the Pabst, Schlitz, and Miller Breweries; and national and international politicians and celebrities who visited Milwaukee.

Abstract: Records, largely consisting of correspondence, of a Polish American group which promoted the celebration of Poland's Millennium of Christianity (966-1966). Some of the primary events that were documented in the collection are the convocation of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concert, and the establishment of Poland's Millennium Achievement Awards Program. The Millennium celebration was also used as a forum for protesting the political conditions facing the people of Poland. Many of the items in the collection denounce the activities of the communist government in Poland. Mrs. Leonne Wozinski, acting chairman of the committee, compiled the records. The later records are primarily newspaper clippings about the Poland's Millennium Achievement Awards Program, which was discontinued in 1989. Many of the records in the collection are in Polish.

Abstract: Collection consists of the records of the Milwaukee Press Club, documenting the oldest continuously operating press club in North America. Founded on November 1, 1885, the Milwaukee Press Club brings together members of the print, broadcast and electronic news media and related professions. The centerpiece of the Milwaukee Press Club records is an extensive collection of autographed plaques that have been signed and dated during the Press Club's long history. Initially, the Press Club asked prominent visitors, such as Theodore Roosevelt, to sign the wooden walls of the club itself, but as the number of signers grew, they established the current tradition of chalk signatures on black matte boards. These autographed plaques feature prominent entertainers such as Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, and Gene Autry; political figures such as Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, and William Jennings Bryan; journalists, including Walter Cronkite and Art Buchwald; and sports figures, such as Babe Ruth, Vince Lombardi, and Stan Musial. In addition to the plaques, the Milwaukee Press Club records include a large collection of photographs which date to the late nineteenth century, copies of the club's annual publication Once a Year, materials relating to the variety of honors awarded annually by the Press Club, and a wide selection of journalistic memorabilia.

Abstract: The collection consists mainly of newspaper clippings, promotional materials, and photographs documenting the history of the Milwaukee Public Schools, Department of Municipal Recreation and Community Education. The clippings provide information on athletic events and social activities conducted by the department. Clippings concerning the early history of the department's recreational programs, which were primarily intended to counteract juvenile delinquency and as a means of cultural assimilation, are also included. Promotional materials and photographs relate primarily to events held at more than twenty social centers operating in Milwaukee under the auspices of the department. A handful of scrapbooks fall outside these subjects and deal with the Gold Medal Award, the Milwaukee Players, New Day, and Wilderness Encounter.

Abstract: Partial records of the Milwaukee United School Integration Committee (MUSIC), an organization which worked to end school segregation and other forms of racial discrimination in Milwaukee. Under the leadership of Milwaukee attorney Lloyd Barbee and Marilyn Morheuser, MUSIC sponsored a “Freedom Day School” on May 18, 1964, to teach black students about their heritage and history, and called for student boycotts of segregated schools in 1965 and 1966. Among MUSIC's other projects were Freedom Camps I and II, 1964; rallies for better housing and jobs, 1964; questionnaires sent to school board candidates in 1965; marches, demonstrations, speakers, and fund-raising events.

Summary: The Minnesota Polka Project documents the polka music traditions of German-American, Czech-American, Slovenian-American, and Polish-American ethnic groups throughout Minnesota. Sixteen bands and 21 of the bands' musicians were documented, resulting in a 44-minute anthology of Minnesota polka recordings and an accompanying 20-page booklet in 1990. Available materials include recorded interviews with band leaders and members, color slides of musicians and performance venues, and artist files containing correspondence, tape logs, electronic versions of the tape logs, and news clippings. The collection includes his account books (1940-1986), a brief autobiography, his diaries (1965-1989), divorce papers, military service records, awards, a book recording Christmas gifts he received in 1973, and records concerning his death. Numbering 400 members in 1965, the MCHR sought to expand the economic, cultural, and civic opportunities of all state citizens. The records mainly consist of Xeroxed copies of the correspondence of Kenneth L. Dean, Executive Director of MCHR in 1965. Also included is a constitution, an annual report from 1975-1976, copies of notes and newspaper clippings regarding the shooting of MCHR supporter Rev. Donald Thompson in 1965, reports, and printed reference material. The tape records a group discussion of March 5, 1966, held with black students attending integrated colleges throughout the South. The MFDP organized blacks and poor people to register and vote, held an unofficial “freedom ballot” for governor in 1963, and in 1964, challenged the seating of Mississippi delegates to the Democratic National Convention. This challenge and a subsequent challenge of the seating of the Mississippi Congressional delegation in 1965 both failed; following these attempts the party turned to statewide organizing and voter registration campaigns. The collection consists of manuscript and microfilmed documents illustrating the organization of the party, its two challenges and subsequent law suits, its voter registration and community organizing work, and Mississippi politics in general. Included are correspondence and printed mailings, statements, and press releases; legal documents; reports and general papers; the proceedings of the Credentials Committee of the Democratic National Convention; election and registration materials; newsclippings; newsletters; materials concerning related organizations; and copies of a masters' thesis and other term papers written about the MFDP by historian Leslie B. McLemore.

Abstract: Records of an affiliate of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), which was active in local voter education and registration, elections and promotion of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, and general desegregation work in Quitman County. Included with the papers are general, printed records of the MFDP and ASCS, and an undated draft constitution and printed voter education materials of the Mississippi Freedom Labor Union. There is also a folder of scattered correspondence, mostly undated; arrest records from picketing during the summer of 1965, and a folder of handwritten notes, containing lists of things to do, contacts and their addresses, and plans for proposed work and future projects. Little of the non-printed material in this collection is clearly labeled as to author, recipient, or date.

Abstract: Records of a local chapter of the Freedom Democratic Party of Meridian, Mississippi, relating to the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), the Student Non-violent Co-ordinating Committee (SNCC), Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as a co-ordinator of projects sponsored by these organizations. The papers contain correspondence, memos, reports, affidavits, minutes and telephone log concerning the Freedom Registration project, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, the Meridian Community Center, local boycotts, and incidents of intimidation including the disappearance and deaths of Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney who were connected with the Meridian office.

Abstract: Records of the Mississippi Valley Public Service Company based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, which operated the streetcar lines. Records are incomplete but include newspaper clippings (1932-1942); a franchise book (1883-1913); and personnel records (ca. 1914-1936). The franchise book includes copied agreements between four utilities and their shareholders and appropriate municipalities. The four companies are La Crosse City Railway Co. (1892-1908), La Crosse Water Power Co. (1905-1913), Winona Railway & Light Co.(1883-1909), and Wisconsin Railway, Light & Power Co. (1913). The personnel records are arranged alphabetically and include information such as birthdate and place of the employee and a summary of accidents incurred during employment. This set is not complete but is representative of typical streetcar employees.

Abstract: Correspondence of two generations of a distinguished Milwaukee family: Alexander Mitchell, a Scottish immigrant who became a financier and railroad promoter and served as congressman from 1871 to 1875; and his son John L. Mitchell, also a financier and political figure. Alexander Mitchell's letters pertain to his political activities, his railroad investments, and other financial enterprises. Among his correspondents were Salmon P. Chase, James R. Doolittle, Rufus King, and Charles H. Larrabee. Letters, 1862-1863, written by John Mitchell and by his cousin, Robert Chivas, describe their Civil War service in the Southwest in the 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Most of John Mitchell's letters, however, are concerned with the panic of 1893 and the resultant failure of the Wisconsin Marine and Fire Insurance Company Bank. Among his correspondents were bank officials, Arthur MacArthur, and Jeremiah Curtin.

Abstract: Papers of Gordon Mitchell, a producer of documentary films and television commercials. The bulk of the collection relates to commercials made by All Scope Pictures, Inc., Mitchell's production company, on behalf of advertising agencies such as Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborn; McCann Erickson; Walter Sausy; and Young & Rubicam. Included in the production files are scripts, correspondence, budgets, contracts, and storyboards for commercials for such nationally-prominent clients as Chrysler Corp., E.J. Gallo Winery, General Electric, General Mills, Kaiser Aluminum, Lucky Lager Brewing Co., Max Factor and Co., Rexall Drug Co., W.A. Schaeffer Pen Co., and Standard Oil of California. Also present are correspondence and notes for three Movietone News features, including one about John F. Kennedy's 1960 California campaign, and fragmentary production files for several proposed television series and special purpose films. Miscellaneous correspondence includes a letter from Darryl F. Abstract: The collection contains the miscellaneous papers of a prominent Milwaukee business and political family. The most extensive parts of the collection are John L. Mitchell's personal letters to his wife, Harriet, and her incoming correspondence from friends. The senatorial correspondence of John L. Mitchell is largely routine constituent correspondence or requests for support from fellow legislators, and includes letters from Frederick Pabst, William Jennings Bryan, Charles King, Arthur MacArthur, Alfred Thayer Mahan, William Rosecrans, Edward Salomon, William Tecumseh Sherman, and William F. Vilas. The collection contains some correspondence of Alexander Mitchell, including a request from Lyman Draper for Mitchell's financial support of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, and copies of several campaign speeches. Also included is an invitation and brochure on the christening of the battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin in 1898. Contains a photograph of aviator Billy Mitchell at the age of four months, and letters (1894-1901) to his father, John L., largely concerning an appointment in the cavalry and a trip around the world.

Abstract: Papers of William Mitchell of Madison, a librarian at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Library, an avocational genealogist, and a victim of AIDS. The collection primarily consists of Mitchell's extensive genealogical research materials on the Mitchell, Nault, Gaffney, and Holquist families, including research notes, copies of public records (birth, death, and marriage certificates), correspondence, published genealogies, manuscripts, memorabilia, photographs, and slides. To a lesser degree the collection documents Mitchell's personal life and his battle with the AIDS illness through financial records, insurance papers, information on his medical history, diary entries, and correspondence.

Mitchell wrote about his experiences in the war and inquired about family. Several letters discuss the action in battles that Mitchell saw with the 1st Wisconsin Regiment, including Perryville, Kentucky; Stones River, Tennessee; and Chickamauga where Mitchell was killed in action.

Abstract: Correspondence of military leader William (Billy) Mitchell, including letters written as a grammar school student at Racine College, Racine, Wisconsin; as a commissioned officer in the Army Signal Corps from camps in the United States, Cuba, and the Philippines during the war with Spain, 1898-1901; and as an officer following the war from camps in mainland United States and from Alaska where Mitchell assisted in developing telegraph communications. The collection also includes incomplete correspondence from Mitchell as an officer serving on the General Staff in Washington, D.C. and on observation tours in Europe prior to World War I; as aviator, brigadier general, and head of the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps during World War I; and as publicity-minded Assistant Chief of Air Service following the war. Also present are several letters written by his first wife, Caroline Stoddard Mitchell, and his daughter Harriet; and a brief exchange with the D.A.R. Boulder Committee concerning a monument for a Revolutionary War ancestor.
