(5 archives boxes) and 95 photographs (1 album) Call Number: Wis Mss QN; PH 1556 Abstract: Papers, primarily family correspondence, 1902-1954, of Carlisle Hibbard, a Y.M.C.A. executive involved with World War I and II relief work, and of his daughter, Esther L. Hibbard, a missionary and educator in Japan. The letters from the Hibbards' stay in East Asia (1902-1914) and during Esther's teaching career (1929-1940, 1946-1952) describe customs, living conditions, and Japanese culture. Described are Carlisle's work in prisoner of war camps (1915-1924), and general conditions in Europe, particularly Russia in 1922. Carlisle's office correspondence (1943-1944) from the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council concerns efforts to get interned students back into colleges. Photographs document Hibbard's 1904-1905 time in Manchuria and Korea. Also included are 15 letters from Daniel Densmore, most written while he served in the Union Army during the Civil War, concerning the 1864 Sanitary Fair in St. Louis, Indian skirmishes in Minnesota, and conditions in the lower Mississippi region.

Hibbard, a former assistant director of the Unemployment Compensation Department of the Wisconsin Industrial Commission, and later, director of unemployment compensation for the General Motors Corporation. The collection includes speeches and articles written or presented by Hibbard during 1948-1973 related to unemployment and workmen’s compensation laws and use.

Hicks, George F., 1905-1965	Title: George F. Hicks Papers, 1926-1965 Quantity: 2.2 c.f. (6 archives boxes) Call Number: U.S. Mss 192AF Abstract: Papers of a broadcaster noted for his war coverage and his specialty of live remove broadcasts for NBC. Hick's most celebrated broadcast was an on-the-spot description of the D-Day Allied invasion of France. The collection focuses on Hicks' professional life, with radio and television scripts and transcripts, extensive background notes, personal and professional correspondence, and diaries. Hicks wrote most of his own broadcast material and the papers include numerous examples. Both the D-Day invasion and Hicks' other World War II experiences are thoroughly documented. Other materials include unpublished manuscripts based upon his work in broadcasting, and two scrapbooks and clippings.

Folklorist Janet C. Gilmore formally interviewed over half of the c. 30 commercial fishermen, fish marketers, and boat builders that she visited on both sides of the river in northeastern Iowa, southwestern Wisconsin, and northwestern Illinois. The survey led to presentations in Iowa and Illinois, photo exhibits at Highland Community College and the Dubuque County Historical Society Museum, as well as commercial fishing demonstrations at the Dubuque County museum in concert with other programming.

Most of the collection consists of notebooks, 1944-1971, about interviews, press conferences, and Hightower's own research. Correspondence, 1945-1960, includes informative personal letters about his coverage of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Russia, 1947, and Berlin, 1954. Background files exist primarily on such government officials as John Foster Dulles, W. Averell Harriman, and George C. Marshall.

Television files include correspondence, production and financial information, produced and unproduced scripts, and films for The Phil Silvers Show (You'll Never Get Rich, CBS), Car 54, Where Are You? Hill, John W., 1890-1977	Title: John W. Hill Papers, 1931-1977 Quantity: 44.8 c.f. (112 archives boxes) and photographs Call Number: U.S. Mss 62AF; PH 3991 Abstract: Papers, mainly 1947-1964, of John W. Hill, a founder and chairman of the board of Hill & Knowlton, a large public relations firm of international repute that specialized in representing industrial corporations and trade associations. The firm's clients included the American Iron and Steel Institute, the American Butter Institute, Aircraft Industries Association, AVCO Manufacturing Corporation, Licensed Beverage Industries, Manufacturing Chemists Association, National Gas and Oil Resource Committee, National Retail Dry Goods Associations, and the Tobacco Industry Research Council. Documentation of Hill's writings include drafts and research material for three books (Corporate Public Relations (1958), The Making of a Public Relations Man (1963), and an unpublished history of Hill & Knowlton).

Hillside Home School (Iowa County, Wis.)	Title: Hillside Home School (Iowa County, Wis.) Portfolio, circa 1893-1900 Quantity: 30 photographs (1 archives box) Call Number: PH 2312 Abstract: Collotype prints of views from a portfolio of the Hillside School, Iowa County, Wis., believed to have been designed, photographed, and lettered by Frank Lloyd Wright and used between 1893 and 1900. The school was run by Jane Lloyd Jones and Ellen Lloyd Jones, aunts of Frank Lloyd Wright. Included are images of the Jones sisters; students involved in classroom activities and playing golf and football; and views of the house, school, and surrounding countryside. Also included are photographic reproductions of the original portfolio enclosure.

Includes diaries (1808-1809, 1825-1826, 1830-1846, 1856), scattered correspondence, articles, reminiscences, poetry, and sermons.

Hinkley, Company E, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Included is correspondence; diaries (1862, 1864); scrapbooks of newspaper clippings containing biographical information, membership lists, and veteran reunion activities (1890-1907); and handwritten essays about the 3rd Wisconsin, used extensively in publications. Also present is an unpublished essay containing research on cosmology, geology, archaeology, Darwin, and American Indian burial finds.

The interview covers Hirsch's early life and education; his work with the International Labor Defense, the National Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners, and the Sunday Worker; his affiliation with the Cafeteria Employees Union and his editorship of the Cafeteria Call; and his editorship of the CIO News.

(4 boxes) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 133 Abstract: Records of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin organization that encourages public awareness and preservation of the historical and architectural heritage of the Greater Milwaukee area. The collection contains records created by Historic Milwaukee, Inc., as well as records created prior to 1981, when the organization was named Historic Walker's Point.
Historic Sites Foundation, Inc.	Title: Historic Sites Foundation, Inc. Records, 1958-1998 Quantity: 14.0 c.f. (14 record center cartons), 2 tape recordings, and 16 photographs (1 folder) Call Number: M2002-032 Abstract: Records of a non-profit corporation created in 1960 as the Historic Sites Foundation, which was authorized to receive and administer private funds for the benefit of the Wisconsin Historical Society, specifically for the promotion and operation of historic sites in Wisconsin. Around 1999 the name was changed to the Circus World Museum Foundation reflecting the actual scope of its interest. The records document the administration of the foundation and its work on behalf of the Society.
Historic Third Ward Association (Milwaukee, Wis.) Records	Title: Historic Third Ward Association Records, 1976-1997 Quantity: 3.8 cubic ft. (4 boxes); 7 oversize folders Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 101 Abstract: Records of a non-profit community association which coordinated the redevelopment of the Historic Third Ward area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The records date largely from the late 1980s through the 1990s; few records exist from the association's early years. The collection provides remarkably detailed information on the association's activities, especially its award-winning Streetscape Project. The project redesigned streets, lighting, and the overall appearance of the ward. Design and planning studies document the economic potential and architectural history of the ward. The records of the association's Architectural Review Board (ARB) contain details on how local property owners complied with design standards. The collection also includes numerous blueprints of the Streetscape Project and the association-sponsored parking structure (a retail and parking facility). No blueprints exist for individual buildings except for those submitted to the ARB, which are usually details of exteriors. Photographs of building exteriors are available for many of the structures.

(21 boxes); 1 oversize folder; 34 nitrate negatives; 33 safety film negatives Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 56 Abstract: Papers of the Hitz family, compiled by John B. Hitz, with some information on other extended family, especially Frederick C. Winkler and the Winkler family, mostly from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Includes family correspondence, mainly discussing their personal affairs, photographs, scrapbooks and artifacts that focus on the lives of these family members and other relatives, and genealogical histories for the Hitz and Winkler families. Some of the photographs are early photographic processes, such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and albumen prints. Of special interest is the typescript account of Carl Winkler's 1843 emigration from Bremen to New York; the letters and military records of Rudolph Hitz, who served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army in the Montana Territory from 1867-1869; and Henry Hitz's letters from the Army (where he was a surgeon) during World War I. The collection also contains news clippings, notes, and letters of Harold Hitz Burton, J. Edgar Hoover, and Norman Mailer, usually about personal affairs, sent to members of the Hitz family.
Hixon and Company (La Crosse, Wis.)	Title: Hixon and Company Records, 1856-1928 Quantity: 54.0 c.f. (101 archives boxes including 157 volumes, and 87 separate volumes) Call Number: La Crosse Mss B Abstract: Records of the lumber business and other investments of Gideon C. Hixon and his son Frank P. Hixon of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Correspondence, letter books, journals, ledgers, and other financial and legal papers document the extensive business enterprises of the Hixon family in Wisconsin and other states in the Midwest (Kansas, Minnesota, and Missouri), West, and South as well as Ontario and British Columbia. Various lumber company records contain information on many facets of the industry, especially in northwestern Wisconsin, including transportation and freight rates, lumber grading and pricing, the use of water and water rights, and taxation. Also included is pre-1900 correspondence containing information and hand-sketched illustrations of the logmarks used in that region. Lumber industry labor relations, union activity, and the influence of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) is documented in letters written from 1917 to 1920. Other industrial and commercial concerns documented in the collection include flour and woolen mills, cattle ranches, tanneries, banks, railroads, pulp and paper manufacturing, electric power, and street railways. Included are business records, 1878-1919, of the T.B. Scott Lumber Company, a major affiliate of Hixon and Company as well as company records from the Crosby Hardwood Company; the Crosby Cattle Company; the Rousseau and Shepard Lumber Company; the Oneida Lumber Company; the McCloud River Lumber Company; the National Cooperage Company; Davis, Medary & Platz; and others.
Hixon Forest Nature Center (La Crosse, Wis.)	Title: Hixon Forest Nature Center (La Crosse, Wisconsin) Records Physical Description: 3.6 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 057 Abstract: This collection is comprised of records of the Hixon Forest Nature Center, which was operated by the Friends of Hixon Forest, Inc. and was located in Hixon Forest, a 790 acre city park in the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin, from 1983-2008. Most materials date from 1985-1997, and include four series: historical background, administrative files, financial materials, and related materials and organizations. The group dissolved and re-emerged as the Myrick Hixon Ecopark in 2008.

Title: Hixon Forest Trail Committee Records General Physical Description note: 0.4 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 025 Abstract: Records, 1975-1990, of the Hixon Forest Trail Committee. The committee builds and maintains the nature trails of Hixon Forest in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and now operates as a committee of the Hixon Forest Nature Center. Materials include committee administration records such as correspondence, finance, meeting minutes, resolutions, and general committee administration materials. Other materials are general correspondence, historical materials which include newspaper clippings, photos and slides, trail maps, and trail maintenance records.
