Graass, Frank N., 1885-	Title: Frank N. Graass Papers, 1917-1963 Quantity: 0.8 c.f. (2 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 32 Abstract: Papers of a Wisconsin Republican and conservationist who served in the State Assembly from 1916 until 1961, including correspondence, reports, legislative bills, budget proposals, speeches, biographical materials, and newspaper clippings. The correspondence, primarily from constituents, focuses on the issues of patronage, military deferments, the Great Lakes fisheries, and other conservation issues. The correspondence includes an exchange with Governor Philip F. La Follette outlining political problems during 1935 and extensive communication with John Van Oosten of the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife. Other prominent correspondents include Walter S. Goodland and Julius P. Heil. Additional materials document the Sturgeon Bay assemblyman's relationships with Governors Goodland (1943-1947) and Heil (1939) and with the Izaak Walton League. During his tenure in the state legislature, Graass also served on the Northern Great Lakes Area Council and the Great Lakes Fisheries Committee of the Council of State Governments.

Graebner, Walter, 1909-	Title: Walter Graebner Papers, 1928-1969 Quantity: 1.2 c.f. (3 archives boxes) Call Number: U.S. Mss 88AF Abstract: Papers of an author, advertising executive, and journalist for Time, consisting mainly of writings and related material. Half of the collection pertains to eight books written wholly or in part by Graebner. These books deal with his experiences in Britain during World War II, his six-month assignment in the Soviet Union in 1942, and Winston S. Churchill. Documentation is best for My Dear Mr. Churchill (1965), for which there are drafts, publicity, reviews, and correspondence; but there is at least a printed copy of the remaining seven volumes. In addition, there are two collections of articles by Time, Inc., writers to which Graebner contributed. Also representing Graebner's writings are cables, drafts, and printed articles for Time and Life (1944); scripts of radio broadcasts concerning the D-Day invasion; proofs and other materials relating to 1954 articles on Churchill for the London Evening Standard and copies and reviews of Saints and Angels News, an Anglican parish magazine which Graebner founded and edited. A small alphabetical correspondence file includes letters from Churchill and his family and staff, Henry R. Luce and other senior staff of Time, Inc., Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, Francis Cardinal Spellman, and Harold Wilson.

Call Number: La Crosse Mss AW; M2006-099 Abstract: Papers, 1946-1980, of Maurice Otto Graff, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, a member of the arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services, and the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission. The collection is limited to material on labor disputes, primarily in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois, for which Graff acted as arbitrator. Legal briefs, agreements, transcripts of hearings, decisions, and publications trace the disposition of individual cases.
Graham, Chester, 1892-	Title: Chester Graham Papers, 1929-1979 Quantity: 2 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 755 Abstract: Microfilmed papers of Chester Graham, a cooperative leader and ardent social activist, primarily relating to his work as director of the Ashland Folk School, Grant, Michigan, 1928-1938, and to his interest in world affairs. Included are newsletters, clippings, editorials, and correspondence that reflect Graham's continuing interest in the folk school, farmers' problems, world issues, and non-violent protest, particularly that of the 1960s. Prominent correspondents include Frank Zeidler, Tony T. Dechant, Paul H. Douglas, and E. L. Kirkpatrick.

Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall	Title: Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall Records, Quantity: 11.4 linear ft. Call Number: WVM Mss 4 Abstract: Records and photographs of the GAR Memorial Hall and its custodians, with the bulk of the material dating from 1904 to 1965. A significant portion of the collection is from the tenure of Hosea W. Rood, the first custodian of the Hall. Custodian records include correspondence with veterans, GAR officials, and the general public; newspaper columns, essays, poems, and speeches on patriotic themes written by the custodians; six diaries of Hosea Rood from the period during which he was Hall custodian; legislative records about the mandate and operation of the Hall; and correspondence and other records documenting the creation of the Camp Randall Memorial Arch in 1912. The collection also includes budget information about the operation of the Hall; lists of artifacts, flags, pictures, and books; and visitor registers, including a GAR members only register dating from 1904 to 1914. Scrapbooks that were created by the Hall custodians or donated to the Hall comprise another large portion of the collection. Most of the scrapbooks feature news clippings about GAR events, reunions, and members, as well as the Women's Relief Corps. Other topics covered include Abraham Lincoln, the assassination of President William McKinley, newspaper clippings containing letters from the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, the First Wisconsin Cavalry, World War I and World War II, and a book of 'curious things' from the Civil War. The photographs series includes depictions of the Hall and its exhibits, including many views of the Gettysburg diorama exhibit, and also includes an extensive collection of Civil War-era carte de visites that were removed from one of the scrapbooks.

Title: Grand Army of the Republic, Wilson Colwell Post Number 38 of La Crosse, Wisconsin Records Physical Description: 0.8 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 088 Abstract: The Wilson Colwell G.A.R. Post Number 38 (La Crosse, Wis.) was named as a memorial to Captain Wilson Colwell from La Crosse, Wis. It was a post organized under the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), Department of Wisconsin in July 1882. The last member died in Sept. 1939. Records contain materials from the national office, the Department of Wisconsin office and the local Wilson Colwell Post Number 38. National materials include encampment material from 1905, music and lyric sheets, a ritual manual and a rules and regulations booklet. Materials from the Dept. of Wisconsin include encampment proceedings (1883; 1904-1907, 1913, and 1931), programs (1931 and 1939) and part of a registration book (1893), as well as rosters (1904 and 1906). Local Colwell Post created materials include a copy from the descriptive book from the Dept. of Wisconsin; financial materials (1882-1900), minutes (1891-1893), a roster (1906), and miscellaneous material.

(54 archival boxes, 5 flat boxes, and 1 oversized folder) Call Number: WVM Mss 1 Abstract: Administrative, organizational, financial, and program materials pertaining to the Wisconsin state and local units of the Grand Army of the Republic, a voluntary fraternal association of Civil War Union veterans. Includes national and state encampment registers and records; materials concerning patriotic instruction in the schools, Memorial Day, and patriotism; administrative and financial materials of the state department and its relations with local posts; Easel-Shaped Monument certificates; and a few materials on the GAR Memorial Hall which housed the offices of the state department. Many records pertain to individual Wisconsin local posts; including reports, membership records, charters, minute books, financial records, resolutions, and scattered correspondence. War reminiscences can be found in several “Personal War Sketches” volumes. Most complete are records for Post No. 11 (Madison), Post No. 20 (Janesville), and Post No. 68 (Chippewa Falls). Scattered records pertain to the National GAR; mostly concerning patriotic instruction. The correspondence, records, and reports of Hosea Rood, 1920 National Patriotic Instructor, are included in this series.
Grand Avenue Congregational Church (Milwaukee, Wis.)	Title: Grand Avenue Congregational Church Records, 1857-1998 Quantity: 17.8 c.f. (62 archives boxes), 21 photographs (1 archives box), and 9 negatives on 5 strips (5 negative envelopes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss 128; PH 3967 Abstract: Records, mainly 1910-1998, of a Milwaukee church founded in 1847 as the Free Congregational Church, later known as the Spring Street Congregational Church, and renamed the Grand Avenue Congregational Church in 1881. The congregation became a member of the United Church of Christ in 1961. The church closed its doors at the end of 1997, the last service held on December 28. There is also information on the United Church of Christ merger and on participation in area ecumenical activities including Central City Churches, Inc., a consortium of urban churches largely concerned with providing aid to the elderly, hungry, and homeless. The photographs include exterior and interior views of the church, services, and the church's 117th anniversary celebration.

Gray, Hunter; (Salter, John R.)	Title: Hunter Gray (John R. Salter) Papers, 1957-1982 Quantity: 1.8 c.f. (1 record center carton, 2 archives boxes), 1 tape recording, and 56 photographs (1 archives box) Call Number: Mss 525; Tape 851A; PH Mss 525 Abstract: Papers of a sociologist and professor who was active in several civil rights and community organizing groups during the 1960's and 1970's, and more recently, has worked to improve the lives and conditions of American Indians. While teaching at Tougaloo Southern Christian College, Salter helped organize the boycott of white businesses in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. He subsequently worked for the Southern Conference Educational Fund in North Carolina, served as director of the Chicago Commons Association (1969-1973) and as director of the Office of Human Development of the Catholic Diocese of Rochester, New York (1976-1978), and spent several years teaching college sociology. John R. Salter changed his name, circa 1995, to John Hunter Gray, his original family name, and in 2000 to just Hunter Gray. The collection contains correspondence; numerous speeches, reports, and other writings by Salter; partial files from some of his professional positions; his FBI files; newspaper clippings; and other papers. Most of the material deals with the Jackson boycott movement, with the Halifax County Voters Movement and civil rights in North Carolina, and with Salter's community organizing among poor people in Chicago and Rochester, New York. Also included is a tape-recorded concert by Floyd Westerman, a Native American musician, presented January 18, 1972 at the Washington State Penitentiary. The photographic portion of the collection includes images of Salter/Gray, both alone and with others, as well as images related to his civil rights activities in the 1960s and 1980s.
Gray, Robert H.	Title: Robert H. Gray Papers and Photographs, Quantity: 1.8 linear ft. (2 archives boxes and 5 oversized folders) of papers and 0.1 linear ft. (6 folders) of photographs. Call Number: WVM Mss 300 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Robert H. Gray, an officer in the medical corps of the Wisconsin National Guard during the Mexican Border War and the 107th Ammunition Train of the 32nd Division during World War I. The bulk of the collection consists of official papers, forms and documents that Gray received and used while serving in the United States military during the World War I era. Medical and quartermaster supply transfer forms, from Camp MacArthur in Texas and from the Western Front in Europe, document the types of supplies and materials that a World War I medical unit used to treat its patients. The collection contains a large number of circulated orders and memoranda from the 32nd Division headquarters during the occupation of Germany at the end of the war; these papers document commendations that were issued to various soldiers as well as training schedules, athletic activities, and orders to embark for home. The letters that Gray wrote to his sweetheart Norma Partridge, both during the war and the subsequent occupation of Germany, provide a personal side to the papers. Gray's letters discuss living conditions for the army in Europe, treating wounded soldiers from both sides of the conflict, the celebrations of the armistice, and his activities during the occupation. Among the photographs in the collection are eight of the 32nd Division, in post-war Germany, preparing for an inspection by General John J. Pershing.

Brockel. General correspondence and subject files concern an import-export rate study; the Committee on Seaway and Navigation; pilotage; water pollution and resources; and the GLC Seaway Institute.

(17 archives boxes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss CW Abstract: Records of the association of government units, chambers of commerce, business and labor groups, and educational institutions interested in promoting the use and development of Great Lakes ports; the Saint Lawrence Seaway; the protection and preservation of water levels; the development of ocean shipping connections; and the increase of waterborne commerce and growth of markets, both foreign and domestic, for mid-America's products. Included are files of the Association, compiled by its executive secretary, Harry C. Brockel, containing minutes of meetings, reports, and correspondence documenting the Association's efforts.

Included are administrative records, publications, financial records, accounting reports, and related organizations' records (1904-1975). The related organizations are the Women's Auxiliary of the Wisconsin Co-Operative Wool Growers' Association, National Wool Marketing Corporation, and Wisconsin Sheepbreeders Association.
Great River Festival of Arts.	Title: Great River Festival of Arts Records Physical Description: 0.8 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 067 Abstract: The Great River Festival of Arts, held in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was begun in 1960 under the leadership of Francesco “Frank” Italiano. What began as an interest in establishing a youth symphony and a short summer season for his Coulee Region Symphony, turned into a full-fledged summer festival of the arts, not only in La Crosse, but extending also to Dodgeville and later to Shell Lake and Superior, Wisconsin. The organizations that are described in this collection as part of the festival groups are the Coulee Region Symphony, the Symphony School of America, the Symphony of the Hills at Dodgeville and the Indianhead Symphony at Shell Lake. The festival’s names have changed through time. Initially it was called the Coulee Region Music Festival in 1960 and became the Coulee Region Arts Festival in 1961, then the Coulee Region Festival of Arts in 1963, and finally the Great River Festival of Arts in 1976. This festival continues to this day (2002). The Coulee Region Summer Symphony in 1960 became the Coulee Region Symphony in 1961 and then the Great River Symphony in 1972. Records, organized by concert season, include materials from the musical life of the festival (1960-1986) when it was under the direction of Frank Italiano. The festival programs; advertising posters; newspaper clippings; photographs that were in the newspaper; application information and forms for the Symphony School; lists of members of the symphony, board, and symphony school faculty; board reports; and a scrapbook created by Lenore Italiano, administrator of the festival, that gives an idea of the administrative components of the Coulee Region Symphony.
Great Rivers United Way (Onalaska, Wis.).	Title: Great Rivers United Way (Onalaska, Wisconsin) Records Physical Description: 9.4 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 059 Abstract: The La Crosse Community Chest was first proposed by the Citizens Committee in 1932 and adopted by seven agencies later that year. By 1955, 19 agencies were affiliated with the Community Chest, and three new agencies were added in the 1956 campaign. During the 1965 campaign, the La Crosse Community Chest and Welfare Federation was renamed the La Crosse United Fund. In 1974 another name change was administered, as the La Crosse United Fund became the United Way of the La Crosse Area, Inc. The United Way of La Crosse underwent an operational reconstruction in 1997 by funding specific programs instead of the agencies themselves. Sometime after 1999, the United Way of La Crosse was renamed the Great Rivers United Way. As of 2012, this organization remains active. Records of the Great Rivers United Way include correspondence, files on committees and their activities, campaign and other advertising materials, financial records, photographs, scrapbooks, and other administrative files. Materials range in date from 1948 to 1999.
Greater Beloit Association of Commerce (Wis.)	Title: Greater Beloit Association of Commerce Records, 1927-1972 Quantity: 2 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Whitewater Micro 5; Micro 608 Abstract: Minutes of a non-profit organization of business and professional people, originally named the Beloit Commercial Club, dedicated to furthering commercial enterprise in the Beloit area. The group promoted tourism and city planning, urged industries to relocate in Beloit, lobbied for tax reform, promoted beneficial highway planning, and encouraged community pride through various projects.

Greater Marshfield Community Health Plan	Title: Greater Marshfield Community Health Plan Records, 1963-2003 Quantity: 6.4 c.f. (16 archives boxes) Call Number: Stevens Point Mss BT Abstract: Records documenting the formation and operation of the Greater Marshfield Community Health Plan (GMCHP), the first Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) in Wisconsin, organized in 1971 in close association with the Marshfield Clinic. Partners in GMCHP's founding included Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and the insurer Blue Cross Associated Hospital Services of Wisconsin. The records include reports, correspondence, memoranda, and meeting minutes compiled by Dr. Russell F. Lewis, one of the organizers of the GMCHP.
Greater Milwaukee Association of Phi Beta Kappa	Title: Greater Milwaukee Association of Phi Beta Kappa Records, 1956-1990 Quantity: 1 cubic ft. (1 box) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 84 Abstract: The association united Phi Beta Kappa members in the Milwaukee area in order to promote scholarship, fellowship, and community welfare. The collection consists primarily of the secretary's records, which include the annual reports to the national Phi Beta Kappa Society, meeting minutes, meeting notices, correspondence, treasurer's reports, and publicity for programs. Some records of the Milwaukee Phi Beta Kappa Foundation, Inc., which the association founded to collect and adminster scholarship funds, are also included. The collection contains records on the UWM Chapter documenting the charter application process including the extensive general report about UWM that was submitted to the national Phi Beta Kappa Society as part of the application, the charter installation in 1974, the president's correspondence (1973-1982), secretary's records which include correspondence, meeting minutes, and publicity (1973-1982), and the annual visiting scholar program (1974-1989).

Case Company, the John Birch Society, the National Association of Manufacturers, and the YMCA. Both were privately operated corporations organized to construct, administer, and finance improvement of the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers in order to improve inland water transportation between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. Land speculation eventually became the focus of the corporation. Most records date from the mid-1800s and document canal construction, financing, and administration, water power leases, and land sales. Included are some records from the first efforts at improvement conducted by the Wisconsin Board of Public Works (1848-1853), plus fragmentary records of the Appleton Paper and Pulp Company, the Kaukauna Water Power Company, and the Fox River Power Pool, all of which operated in the Fox and Wisconsin River Valleys. On microfilm are three items concerning legal matters of interest to the Company. One folder contains typewritten copies of legal papers, 1866-1900, from the Wisconsin Secretary of State's files.

The Home Purchase Committee records document a 1949 attempt by some Greendale residents to purchase their homes from the federal government to prevent speculation on the property. The series also contains annual reports by the village board of trustees (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964-65); and capital improvement plans (1938-1967) regarding education, utilities, and community infrastructure.

Greene, a wholesale drug dealer in Milwaukee; and his uncle, Captain Howard Greene, who died while serving with the 24th Wisconsin during the Civil War. Pertaining to Howard Greene's own career are original order books and other records pertaining to the service of the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War and extensive records on his role as receiver of the Bankers Joint Stock Land Bank of Milwaukee, 1927-1938. The receivership records document the management of the receivership, as well as containing much detailed financial data and documentary photographs about individual farms in Wisconsin and Minnesota for which the bank held the mortgage. Greene's interest in family history and genealogy is documented in numerous notes, charts, recollections, transcriptions, and collected original documents. In addition to Greene and Arnold family members, these documents also refer to connections with the Cadle family, the Tenney family, and John G. McMynn. Among the signatures of autograph value contained in the original documents are William Clark, William Ellery, Nathanael Greene, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington.

Greene acquired specimens through exploration of Wisconsin quarries, through exchanges with collectors and paleontologists in other states, and through purchases from individuals and from scientific supply companies. After his death the collection of specimens was given to Milwaukee-Downer College and later moved to the possession of Lawrence University. Greene's correspondence concerns the location, identification, and acquisition of his fossils and minerals. Among his notable correspondents were Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin, Philo R. Hoy, James Hall, Charles Wachsmuth, and Robert P. Whitfield. One folder of letters, 1884-1891, concerns the collections of the Milwaukee Public Museum, of which Greene was a trustee. Four volumes include catalogues of his collection, an account book recording purchases of fossils, and a notebook listing the sources from which he obtained mineral specimens.

The majority of the papers consist of incoming correspondence, mainly to Gregory, with a few drafts of replies. Letters in the 1850s to Gregory's father, a Milwaukee pioneer and promoter, discuss prospects of the fur trade, Wisconsin land speculations, and proposals to encourage planned immigration to the area from England and Scotland. Letters addressed to William E. Cramer, founder and publisher of the Milwaukee Evening Wisconsin, during the latter half of the nineteenth century, and letters in 1898 to journalist Alexander Thomson discuss political topics. The collection also includes some correspondence of Mrs. Cramer with Mrs. Lydia Ely, Gaetano Trentanove, and other artists and sculptors.

(4 archives boxes) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 138 Abstract: Papers of Grignon, a resident of Kaukauna, Wis., federal Indian interpreter, and local Democratic political figure. A few letters and accounts reflect Grignon's interest in the waning fur-trade business which he acquired from his father Augustin Grignon, but most of the correspondence relates to his work as an Indian interpreter from 1844 to 1855. Included are records of annuity payments and of conferences with the Indians, and references to his trips to Washington on behalf of the Menominees in 1845 and 1850. Among Grignon's correspondents on politics, business, and Indian affairs were Florimond J. Bonduel, Ben C. Eastman, Albert G. Ellis, George W. Ewing, Morgan L. Martin, and Lyman C. Draper. The collection also contains papers of David P. Meade and John F. Meade, Grignon's father-in-law and brother-in-law. These include postal records kept by David P. Meade while postmaster of Kaukauna in 1853-1854; and informative letters on business and politics written in the 1840s by John F. Meade, first from Green Bay as U.S. Land Receiver, then from Madison while a clerk in the Territorial House of Representatives and a state legislator. Numerous business papers relate to land sales, some by Charles A. Grignon, some by Jacob Deuel, surveyor and town promoter in Calumet County. Also included are letters regarding the use of stone from the Grignon quarry for locks on the Fox River, and other improvements.

Grinnell financed two rescue missions to find Franklin as well as other scientific missions to the Arctic region.

The collection tends to be more useful for research on public attitudes toward civil rights activism than for a study of Groppi's life and work particularly in the correspondence. However, there are some materials which do offer a glimpse into the life of Father Groppi, particularly an unfinished manuscript of a proposed autobiography, sermons, and appointment books and calendars. Additionally, there are legal materials, which offer much information about his civil rights work; scrapbooks and newspaper clippings; tapes of speeches concerning his views on the church and its role in racial and social issues and various recordings of other people and activities; personal correspondence and other material about Groppi's activities as president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 998; papers of his wife, Peggy Rozga, also a civil rights activist; and photographs which include images of civil rights protests and unrest in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin and photographs relating to Father Groppi's personal life.

Through files on two works the collection documents his activities in theater and television. Pertaining to the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Subject Was Roses (1964) are correspondence (mainly fan mail); director's notes; financial, technical, and promotional information; clippings; scripts; and a copy of playwright Frank Gilroy's production diary. Material on The Investigation (1966) is more extensive and documents Grosbard's work both as translator and director of the Broadway and NBC television productions. Present here are correspondence, scripts, clippings, and notes.

Correspondents include Aldo Leopold. The album contains images of prairie chickens, nests, eggs, nesting hens, and chicks. Also included are images of field blinds and camera installations.

Gross, a Progressive politician and lawyer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Gross was a supporter of Robert M. La Follette, a political ally and personal friend of Irvine L. Lenroot, and manager of Wendell L. Willkie's Wisconsin campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 1944. The collection includes selected political corrrespondence received by Gross, some speeches made by him prior to 1921, reports and notes on the Republican national conventions of 1916 and 1920, a typescript of his proposed book entitled “A Political Grab-bag,” and four volumes of newspaper clippings relating to his career. Prominent correspondents include Amos Pinchot, Lenroot, and La Follette as well as many other political figures.

Gross's participation in an ad hoc committee to select a site for the city bus barn and the controversy surrounding that selection are the best documented aspects of the papers. The files include correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, resolutions introduced to the Council, and information on the Triangle and Bassett neighborhoods in the 9th district. The collection documents the leftist perspective Gross brought to national social issues as well as city matters and his collaboration with other central city alderpersons in efforts to protect the elderly, low-income, and student populations in downtown neighborhoods.

The correspondence was exchanged with various economic organizations (including cooperatives, in which Groves had a longstanding interest), government bodies, academic groups, and individuals. (2 archives boxes and 1 flat box) Call Number: M97-204 Abstract: Material, 1936-1994, collected by John Gryga, a furniture designer and furniture construction engineer active in Wisconsin and Michigan between 1916 and 1967. Most of the material reflects his years at the Wisconsin Chair Company, from 1933 to 1953, where he worked as a designer, router, and advisor to the sales department. There are also miscellaneous items from other companies with whom Gryga was associated, most notably the R-Way Furniture Company in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Many of the extensive furniture drawings were created by designer Ernest L. Swartz.
