Cullen Papers,1976-1982 Quantity: 3.4 c.f.(3 record center cartons and 1 archives box) Call Number: Whitewater Mss BC Abstract: Legislative papers of a Democratic State Senator (1974-) from Janesville who served as majority leader (1982-). The papers chiefly consist of files on two committees which Cullen chaired: the Senate Committee on Aging, Business and Financial Institutions, and Transportation and the Legislative Council's Committee on Mining. The former includes correspondence, memoranda, notes, clippings, reports and research material concerning mortgage subsidization plans, raising the drinking age, property tax deferrals for the elderly, the appointment of Owen Ayres to head the Department of Transportation, and other matters considered by the committee. Mining Committee files include similar documentation as well as agenda, summary meeting transcripts, and public hearing statements. Also included are files on several mining subcommittees Cullen headed, most notably the Subcommittee on Uranium Exploration and Safety. Taken together, the Mining Committee files concern taxation and safety issues raised by mining company exploration of northern Wisconsin during the late 1970's and early 1980's |

The collection includes meeting minutes and annual reports, scrapbooks, photographs, slides, and films and videos. |
| Currie, George R., 1900-1983 | Title: George R. Currie Diaries, 1927-1983 Quantity: 2.2 c.f. (6 archives boxes) Call Number: M2003-127 Abstract: Personal diaries of George R. Currie, who was appointed to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1951 and served as chief justice from 1964 to 1968. A graduate of the Oshkosh State Normal School (now UW-Oshkosh) and of the University of Wisconsin Law School, Currie went on to build a successful law practice in Sheboygan before serving as a judge. The diaries are particularly complete and cover his daily activities including his professional life, contemporary political events, and his work with a number of organizations including the American Legion, Freemasons, the Mead Public Library Board, and Kiwanis. He also writes about his many recreational activities, including gardening, reading, enjoying radio and television programs, and traveling. Also included is a travel diary detailing his month-long trip to Europe in the 1950s. |

His study of Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, The Making of an American Community (1959), pioneered the use of statistical information in the writing of local history. |

Included are photostat copies of Cushing's will and probate records; a volume containing the Wisconsin Supreme Court brief of the case Cushing vs. Hungerford and other papers pertaining to a dispute over ownership of land in the St. Croix River Valley in Wisconsin; and microfilm copies of selected papers from the Cushing Papers at the Library of Congress. The microfilm includes correspondence, legal documents, and newsclippings concerning his land investments; the dispute with William S. Hungerford, 1850-1852; the impeachment of Judge Levi Hubbell; and Wisconsin politics, 1850-1855, particularly the Democratic Party in Wisconsin. Correspondents include Arthur MacArthur, James K. Knowlton, and F. K. Bartlett. |
