Craig, Gerald S., 1893-	Title: Gerald S. Craig Papers, 1931-1967 Quantity: 9.2 c.f. (23 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 43 Abstract: Papers of Gerald S. Craig, a teacher and author of elementary school science textbooks; including correspondence, memoranda, book manuscripts, notes, articles, speeches, trip itineraries, and biographical notes. The bulk of the correspondence is with teachers, school systems (organized by city and state), co-authors, and editors and others at his publisher, Ginn and Co. There is a small amount of family correspondence describing Craig's trips to Bulgaria and the Soviet Union in 1931. The memoranda focus on exchanges between Craig and his collaborators on five science series for which he served as senior editor. The papers include extensive notes for speeches, class lectures at the Horace Mann School at Columbia and State Teachers College at Troy, Alabama, and for the preparation and promotion of his two most prominent science series, Science Today and Tomorrow and Science for You.

Crandall Train of Baraboo, Wisconsin. The correspondence mainly consists of letters on health and financial matters and on military service by family members in the 6th Wisconsin, the 17th Wisconsin, the 23rd Wisconsin, and other regiments during the Civil War. Portions of the Civil War correspondence are also available on microfilm.
Crandall, Leonard, 1923-1990	Title: Leonard Crandall Papers, 1939-1946 Quantity: .6 cubic ft. (2 boxes) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 91 Abstract: Collection of photographs, documents and memorabilia pertaining to serviceman Leonard Crandall's active duty in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. The photographs focus on the Fifth Air Force in New Guinea, Okinawa and the Philippine Islands of Leyte and Luzon, where Crandall was stationed during 1944 and 1945. They include images of camp areas, servicemen, aircraft and other equipment, and the surrounding villages, people and culture. Crandall was a Wisconsin native. Documents included are pay records, bond allotment forms, discharge papers, and correspondence, and memorabilia includes uniform patches and foreign currency. The collection also includes photographs of family and friends, Crandall's 1939 and 1941 high school annuals, and class of 1941 diploma from Cudahy High School.
Cranefield Family	Title: Cranefield Family Papers, 1870-2001 Quantity: 2.1 c.f. (5 archives boxes and 1 oversize folder) Call Number: Mss 1003 Abstract: Papers documenting four generations of the James and Maria (Tipple) Cranefield family, immigrants from Norfolk, England who settled in the Madison, Wisconsin area in 1848. The bulk of the collection documents the descendants of Frederic Cranefield and his wife Laura (Hinrichs) Cranefield, a prominent couple in Madison. Frederic Cranefield worked for the University of Wisconsin's Horticulture Department and had four children, Marion, Paul, Harold, and Laura. Marion served in World War I and was one of the first Wisconsin soldiers to die in that conflict; there is a VFW Post named in his honor in Madison. Paul's son, Paul, Jr., received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1951 and his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1964. He was a prominent doctor of cardiology as well as a published author of many medical physiology texts. He was also a devout enthusiast of the theater and the papers reflect this interest. The papers consist of genealogical research files, correspondence, diaries, and news clippings.

(5 archives boxes and 1 oversize folder) Call Number: Crawford Series 17 Abstract: Records, mainly 1876-1882, of the Crawford County Board of Supervisors, primarily consisting of handwritten proceedings, resolutions, vote tallies, and claims and expenses approved by the board. Also included are bids for the position of county attending physician (1881), county property inventories, reports on county road projects, and bids and specifications for the 1866 courthouse and the poor house (1890). The county poor house is also represented by hand drawn floor plans.

Clerk: Poll Lists and Election Records, 1876-1959 Quantity: 3 reels of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Crawford Series 22 Abstract: Election inspectors' statements and tally sheets from judicial, local, and general elections, 1876-1913. Also included are poll lists of voter names, including election district, date, and type of election, 1922-1924, 1949, and 1959.
Crawford County (Wis.). Clerk	Title: Crawford County (Wis.). Clerk: Miscellaneous Records, 1831-1926 Quantity: 3.2 c.f. (3 archives boxes and 2 flat boxes) Call Number: Crawford Series 19 Abstract: Miscellaneous records, mainly 1878-1906, deposited with the county clerk; including fragmentary population and agricultural census reports (1865, 1895, and 1905); Civil War militia lists (1862 and 1864), and miscellaneous records relating to county and town officers. Also included are incomplete files of accident reports, bounty claims, jury lists, 1831 marriage certificates issued by Justice of the Peace Joseph Brisbois, and annual reports of "outdoor" poor relief (1878-1884). The agricultural reports are of various types, but all contain detailed statistics that were probably used for assessment purposes. The series also includes two incomplete letters: the first (ca. 1838) written by a soldier at Fort Crawford to a relative about his plans to settle at Lake Superior when his enlistment ends and the second (ca. 1849) written by Alfred Brunson giving his ideas about how towns should be organized in the county.
Crawford County (Wis.). Clerk	Title: Crawford County (Wis.). Clerk: Election Records and Poll Lists, 1829-1928 Quantity: 9.4 c.f. (9 record center cartons and 1 archives box) Call Number: Crawford Series 15 Abstract: Records of the county clerk relating to local, state, judicial and special elections, primarily from 1879-1928. For the majority of the elections from 1855 to 1928 the records consist of inspectors' statements of results and tally sheets, usually at the precinct level. Poll lists giving the names of voters date from 1829 to 1906 and are continuous for 1856-1897. Election records of particular interest are the 1859 and 1861 referenda which sought to move the county seat from Prairie du Chien to a newly-created community and an 1857 referendum on African-American suffrage.

Some volumes contain land patents, tax deeds, contracts, mortgages, and miscellaneous records (probate information).
Crawford County (Wis.). Treasurer	Title: Crawford County (Wis.). Treasurer: Tax, Delinquent, and Special Tax Rolls, 1855-1970 Quantity: 219.0 c.f. (2,564 volumes) Call Number: Crawford Series 23 Abstract: Tax rolls noting date, town, owner, land description, acreage, valuation of real and personal property, amount of taxes, total taxes, and payment. Delinquent tax returns show owner, land description, acreage, valuation, and taxes. Special tax rolls include War Tax and War Bounty Rolls, 1863 and 1864, which were tax assessments levied for the purpose of paying the bounties to volunteers in the Union army. The rolls contain a description of property, assessed valuation, land ownership, and the amount of tax assessed. Some volumes include listings of returns and whether the taxes were paid. Other “Special” tax rolls include Assessment rolls and “Equalized” tax rolls. County-wide special volumes include Assignment Rolls, Redemption Records, and Affidavits and Proof of Publication of Tax Sales.
Crawford, Berenice Maloney, 1896-	Title: Berenice Maloney Crawford Papers, 1896-1974 Quantity: 1.6 c.f. (3 archives boxes and 1 flat box) and 56 photographs Call Number: Milwaukee Mss 12; PH Milwaukee Mss 12 Abstract: Papers documenting the long career of Crawford, a Wisconsin educator who taught classes from elementary through university level. Particular emphasis is given to her early teaching activities (1930-1939), and to her husband Frederick's life and inventions. Included is material pertaining to the elementary report card and kindergarten activity programs she developed; and files, scrapbooks, and diaries documenting her travels and activities as a founder of the Wisconsin chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

(1 archives box), 1 reel of microfilm (35mm), and 58 photographs Call Number: Mss 756; Micro 1149; PH 3810; PH 3811 Abstract: Papers, mainly 1937-1972, of Kenneth Gale Crawford, a journalist, magazine editor, and World War II correspondent. Included are printed copies of articles, speeches, fragmentary correspondence, microfilmed scrapbooks concerning his year as president of the American Newspaper Guild (1940) and other aspects of his early professional career, book reviews, a complete run of his “Washington” column from Newsweek magazine (available only on microfilm), biographical information, photographs, and subject files concerning his coverage of World War II, a trip to Vietnam in 1962, and interviews of Lyndon B. Johnson and Henry Kissinger.

(3 boxes) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 204 Abstract: Collection consists of the records of the Cream City Business Association, an affiliation of metropolitan Milwaukee gay and lesbian business owners and service providers that was in existence from 1981 to 1989. Collection includes meeting agendas and minutes of the executive committee and board of directors, newsletters, administrative correspondence, business directories, and committee files.
Cream City Foundation	Title: Cream City Foundation Records, 1982-2001 Quantity: 2.4 cubic ft. (6 boxes); 1 oversize folder; 5 videocassettes Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 205 Abstract: Founded in 1982, Cream City Foundation (CCF) is the only non-profit, grant making, community-based foundation serving the entire State of Wisconsin whose sole purpose is to support the changing needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. The collection contains correspondence, board meeting minutes, newsletters, financial information, publicity materials, articles of incorporation, and annual reports. It also contains grant applications from over eighty LGBT organizations, many of which are now inactive. These applications are likely the only surviving documentation of many of these groups. Examples of educational materials produced with CCF support are included in the collection.
Crean, Robert J.	Title: Robert J. Crean Papers, 1947-1971 Quantity: 3.6 c.f. (9 archives boxes) Call Number: U.S. Mss 95AN Abstract: Papers of a writer for television and theater whose work is known for its frequent exploration of religious themes. Scripts, notes, and correspondence relating to teleplays for Catholic Hour (NBC), CBS Playhouse, and N.Y.P.D. (ABC), comprise the bulk of the collection. There are, however, some produced and unproduced motion picture and theater scripts and a file of general correspondence containing exchanges with his friend Sir Tyrone Guthrie about dramatic theory and the general state of the theater. Many documents bear helpful annotations supplied by the donor.
Creighton, Helen, 1914-	Title: Helen Creighton Papers, 1958-1979 Quantity: .4 cubic ft. (1 box) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 25 Abstract: Collection contains the unpublished speeches and workshop addresses by Dr. Helen Creighton, Distinguished Professor of Nursing, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The addresses and speeches which Creighton gave at nursing conventions and workshops focused on malpractice issues; the role of the nurse in communicating and observing medical procedures; and ethical concerns of prolonging life and terminating life support systems. The collection also includes biographical information, newspaper clippings, and undated photographs of Creighton. An inclusive bibliography lists over 300 articles written by Creighton for publication mainly in Nursing Management and Supervisor Nurse, for which she served as a monthly contributing editor (1970-1987).
Critchfield, Richard, 1931-	Title: Richard Critchfield Papers, 1938-1987 Quantity: 16.0 c.f. (40 archives boxes), 1 reel of microfilm (35 mm), 2 tape recordings, and photographs Call Number: U.S. Mss 117AF; Micro 541; Audio 1183A; PH 3729 Abstract: Papers of Richard Critchfield, an author and foreign correspondent known for his coverage of Far Eastern events and reports on third world cultures and the impact on them of agricultural and technological change. Although the bulk of the papers consists of writings, the correspondence file contains important exchanges with his newspaper and book editors and personal correspondence with his family. There are also memoranda about events in Vietnam, exchanges with staff at the Alicia Patterson Fund which sponsored some of his research, and correspondence about political situations in the various countries which Critchfield studied. The collection contains substantial documentation on five books, The Long Charade: Political Subversion in the Vietnam War (1968), The Golden Bowl Be Broken: Peasant Life in Four Cultures (1973), Shahhat, An Egyptian (1978), Villages (1981), and Those Days: An American Album. Also in the collection are notes on interviews with Chester B. Bowles, John Kenneth Galbraith, Indira Gandhi, Ferdinand Marcos, Robert S. McNamara, Anwar Sadat, and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

(2 archives boxes) Call Number: Milwaukee Mss 85 Abstract: Scattered papers of a Milwaukeean active in Wisconsin economic development; consisting largely of quitclaims, property tax receipts, and financial records from Crocker's activities as a railroad receiver and an investor in land and other ventures. The papers include fragmentary correspondence, lists, and receipts on railroad business, debts and mortgages, and investments in City of Milwaukee bonds as well as on household and personal expenses. The bulk of the collection involves real estate transactions.

Crockett's published and unpublished books include Revelations of Louise (1920), Ditties from a Ditty Bag (1922), and When James Gordon Bennett Was Caliph of Bagdad (1926). Of special note is an unpublished autobiography concerning his early experiences as a journalist and foreign correspondent and his observations of New York City culture and nightlife during Prohibition; clippings and photographs pertaining to his coverage of a 1904 automobile tour in Europe, and a typescript of a 1913 journal concerning conditions in the Philippines.

(3 volumes) Call Number: Draper Mss N Abstract: Military and personal papers of William Croghan, a Revolutionary War officer in the 8th Virginia Militia Regiment, who was also the brother-in-law of Jonathan, George Rogers, and William Clark.
Cromwell, John, 1888-1979	Title: John Cromwell Papers, 1902-1972 Quantity: 3.2 c.f. (8 archives boxes) and 933 photographs Call Number: U.S. Mss 139AN; Lot A116; Lot A117; Lot A118; Lot B23 Abstract: Papers of John Cromwell, an award-winning actor, director, and producer for motion pictures and theater, including correspondence, scripts, and scrapbooks. Of Cromwell's many motion picture credits, the papers include scrapbooks and scripts on eleven films, most notably Abe Lincoln in Illinois (RKO, 1940), Anna and the King of Siam (20th Century-Fox, 1945), The Prisoner of Zenda (United Artists, 1937), and Since You Went Away, (United Artists, 1944). Three scrapbooks pertain to his career as a Broadway actor and director, with one of these relating to his Tony-winning role in Point of No Return (1951). Participation in regional theater, primarily the Cleveland Playhouse and the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre, is represented by clippings, playbills, and miscellaneous production materials. The professional correspondence includes letters from Paddy Chayefsky, Joseph Conrad, Bette Davis, Ruth Gordon, Katharine Hepburn, John Hess, David O. Selznick, and Robert E. Sherwood. The photographs are primarily personal and include snapshots of Cromwell's homes, travels, horses, and a wedding in the 1940s.
Croner, Vera F., 1920-2010	Title: Vera Croner Papers, circa 1860-2010 Quantity: 0.4 c.f. (1 archives box) and 407 photographs (1 archives box) Call Number: M2010-144 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Vera Fannie Croner detailing her life as a Jew living in Germany until her move in 1945 to Norway and then eventually to the United States. The papers include correspondence; materials pertaining to her grandfather, Bondy Croner; biographical documents and publications about Vera, as well as numerous pieces of memorabilia. Also included are numerous materials on Vera's parents, Max and Hedwig Croner. Included also are many photographs depicting Max and Hedwig, and many photographs of Vera through the years.

Reginald Crosby who served on the Committee on Economic Security. Contents include reports, news clippings, meeting minutes, and miscellaneous publications related to Social Security.
Crosby, Henry	Title: Henry Crosby Papers, 1969-1976 Extent: 2 cubic ft. (3 boxes and 1 beer case) Call Number: UWM Manuscript Collection 188 Abstract: This collection contains Henry Crosby's papers pertaining to the 1970 acquisition and the 1972 closure of the Peoples Brewing Company. Crosby was on the board of directors of this company. This brewery was owned by a group of Milwaukee-based African American Investors. As a result of this purchase and the subsequent African American directed stock sale, the Peoples Brewing Company became the first major African American owned brewery in Wisconsin. The Henry Crosby Papers consist of documents relating to the Peoples Brewing Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin; the president of the Peoples Brewing Company, Theodore Mack; minority business initiatives; the Wisconsin brewing industry; and the Small Business Administration (SBA), which is the federal government agency whose function is to council and assist the interests of small businesses. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, legal documents, publications, public stock records, Peoples Brewing Company business records, a publication from the Afro-Urban Institute, cardboard beer case labels, and Peoples Brewing Company and Oshkosh Brewing Company regalia. This collection has profound significance not only as the first African American owned brewing company, but in the federal investigations that were prompted from SBA mishandling of the company's closure. In addition, it incited investigations of other corporations and federal bureaus that were related to Mack's initial suit against the SBA and the Defense Department in 1972.
Crowley, Leo T.	Title: Leo T. Crowley Papers, 1930-1970 Quantity: 3.0 c.f. Weiss for his biography of Leo T. Crowley, The President's Man: Leo Crowley and Franklin Roosevelt in Peace and War (Southern Illinois University Press, Carbondale, 1966). Papers concern Crowley's career as a businessman, chief aide to Madison Mayor Schmedeman, and federal administrator, and consist of correspondence, speeches, news clippings, and reports. Included are originals and copies from Crowley's personal papers, as well as copies from other sources. Also included is an interview of Crowley conducted in 1969 by Lawrence C. Eklund and photographs by George P. Koshollek.

The papers consist of the records of Charles H. and Jessie Evans Crownhart and their sons, Jesse George, and Charles H. Crownhart Jr. Primarily correspondence, the collection thoroughly documents the family's personal history as well as each member's professional interests.
Cruger, Jefferson, 1804(?)-1884	Title: Jefferson Cruger Diary, 1831-1871 Quantity: 1 reel of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 765 Abstract: Diary of Jefferson Cruger, including poems and sermon extracts, concerning his deep involvement in religion and the temperance movement, and his daily activities as a teacher in New York, farmer in Iowa, Civil War soldier in the 46th Iowa Infantry, farmer in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and teacher near Mondovi, Wisconsin.
Cruikshank, Nelson H., 1902-1986	Title: Nelson Cruikshank Papers, 1927-1989 Quantity: 19.0 c.f. (17 record center cartons, 2 archives boxes, and 4 card boxes) Call Number: Mss 1002 Abstract: Papers of Nelson Cruikshank, director (1944-1965) of the AFL and the AFL-CIO Social Security Department in which capacity he was involved in much of the Social Security legislation of the 1950s and in the creation of Medicare. He was also an adviser to AFL-CIO presidents William Green and George F. Meany. Cruikshank also exercised general oversight of health and welfare programs of all AFL-CIO internationals and state federations. Particularly well documented in this regard are the California Federation of Labor and the Laundry Workers International Union, as well as his participation in the investigation of alleged mishandling of union welfare funds. Additional files concern the important 1960 White House Conference on Aging, the National Advisory Council on Social Security Financing, and the AFL-CIO's Social Security Advisory Committee. The papers primarily document his involvement with the AFL-CIO prior to 1961 so that his role in Medicare during the 1960s is not well represented. After retiring from the AFL-CIO in 1965 Cruikshank was a national leader on issues pertaining to health care and the aging, serving as a member of the Health Insurance Benefits Advisory Council, as president of the National Council of Senior Citizens, and as advisor to President Jimmy Carter on aging issues. The collection includes some documentation about the above topics. The papers consist of correspondence and memoranda, speeches and writings (some in recorded form), and minutes and meeting files for the Federal Advisory Council on Employment Security and the previously mentioned advisory committees. Correspondence and draft materials relate to the publication of his memoirs, The Cruikshank Chronicles, by Alice Cruikshank Hoffman as part of the Save Our Security (SOS) Education Project. Prominent correspondents include Wilbur Cohen, Aime Forand, Dan Goldy, Wilbur Mills, and Mathew Woll.

Includes a complete run of scripts of the original show, 1934-1945, and of an Australian version broadcast in 1959-1960, character sketches, show music, outlines, publicity, commercials, reference material, scenarios, story summaries, and synopses. Personal and business papers include a biographical sketch written by Crusinberry's daughter, personal correspondence, fan mail, music and poems by Crusinberry, newsclippings, and correspondence with substitute authors, advertising agencies, networks, lawyers, and the show's sponsor, Procter and Gamble.
