Additional records of SCEF and its predecessor, the Southern Conference for Human Welfare (1938-1948) are also included and were once in the possession of James Dombrowski, who headed both organizations before the Bradens. The Bradens' career with SCEF is documented by correspondence and subject files about work as field organizers, editors of the Southern Patriot, and co-directors. Many mailings and sound recordings document the split within SCEF that led to the Bradens' resignation and the organization of the Southern Organizing Committee for Economic and Social Justice in 1975. |

(2 archives boxes) Call Number: Wis Mss KM Abstract: Papers of Brigadier General Bragg of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War, a hero of the “Iron Brigade.” His letters are mainly to his wife in Fond du Lac, Wis., written from camp and battlefield, and later a few from the House of Representatives in Washington and from Havana, Cuba, where he was consul general. There is a little material from Hong Kong, China, where he was stationed as consul general for four years, and some political letters from William F. Vilas and others. Letter books, 1888-1889, kept by Bragg while minister to Mexico, contain copies of his official letters to the Department of State, to the Mexican government, and to private citizens in both countries, and some copies of letters received at the legation. Included in the collection are some Civil War reminiscences, an address explaining the purposes of the Union Veteran Legion, a muster roll of Co. E of the 6th Infantry, and biographical material. |

(9 folders and 1 oversized folder) of photographs. Call Number: WVM Mss 948 Abstract: The papers and photographs of Waldemar F. Breidster, a star football player at West Point, an officer who served in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II, and a brigadier general in the Wisconsin National Guard during the 1950s. Collection contains scattered documents relating to Breidster's military service and his football career at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Correspondence, proceedings from hearings, and medical reports relate to his efforts to retire with medical benefits from active service following World War II. Another set of documents reveal that Breidster exceeded the Army's standard weight limits prior to World War II and was ordered to lose eight pounds. He pointed out a special exemption he had received, though, and the order was rescinded. Other papers from his military service include pay and medical records, orders, and papers relating to Army Extension courses. Newspaper clippings, programs, and schedules reveal details about his athletic career at West Point. Focusing mainly on football, the papers show that Breidster was an All-American guard and captain of the team in 1922. Menus and dance programs document some of the social activities he participated in at West Point. The photographs, which are scattered and mostly unidentified, consist of several pictures of Breidster in uniform at various stages of his career, two photos of the 32nd Division staff, and shots taken at banquets and field artillery exercises. There is one photograph of an Army football team of which Breidster was a member. |

(2 archives boxes) Call Number: Mss 398 Abstract: Family papers of two Marquette County, Wisconsin, brothers-in-law, James A. Briggs and Robert Mitchell. The papers consist primarily of correspondence between various family members revealing their loyalty to the Episcopal Church and the Republican Party, and other aspects of the lives of a well-to-do family in the 1870s and 1880s. Some of Robert Mitchell's correspondence is of a political nature, relating to the growing opposition in the Wisconsin legislature and nationally to radical Republicans and the Ulysses S. Grant administration, and to the 1875 defeat of radical Republican U.S. Senator Matthew Carpenter in which Mitchell played a part. Also includes an account book for Briggs' flour and carding mills at Briggsville, 1853-1860, and a biographical sketch of Robert Mitchell. |

Major news and political events, such as the Chicago and Peshtigo fires, are also mentioned. Yellow note cards are matched with each letter and summarize the letter's content. Early letters (in Folder 1) concern financial matters in Vermont; a brief family history is included in a later letter (in Folder 6). |

Brigham, a Milwaukee attorney. The early papers consist largely of personal letters from former schoolmates at Amherst College and from relatives including his brother-in-law, Horace G. Bliss, in regard to real estate matters and the large farm at Blue Mounds, Wis., owned jointly with Bliss, and from the operators of the farm. Present for 1854-1855 are typewritten copies of letters written by prominent orators of the day to Brigham while he was secretary of the lecture committee of the Milwaukee Young Men's Association. Beginning about 1859, there are scattered letters on political subjects, including several from John F. Potter, relating to the election of 1860 and secession and occasional letters from Horace Rublee in regard to Wisconsin and national party matters and politics and to the Milwaukee Sentinel. Some letters of Senator Timothy O. Howe relate to the patronage aspects of the struggle between President Johnson and Congress. In the early 1870s, there are letters to Brigham in his capacity as a member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, relating to the presidency of Dr. John H. Twombly. |

(3 archives boxes and 2 card boxes), 3 reels of microfilm (35mm), and 2 photographs Call Number: Wis Mss VD; Micro 437; PH 6554 Abstract: Papers of Brisbane, a doctor, minister, editor, author, and a South Carolina slaveholder who turned abolitionist and moved north where he freed his slaves, edited abolitionist publications in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and participated in the experiment in communal living at Brook Farm in Massachusetts in 1845. After coming to Wisconsin in 1853 to promote the development of Arena, Wisconsin, he served as clerk of the state senate, 1854, and as chaplain of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry, 1861-1862, and was appointed by Salmon P. Chase to be tax commissioner of the District of South Carolina during the early years of Reconstruction. The collection contains twenty-two letters written by Brisbane himself, of which more than half pertain to his effort to secure the 1860 Republican presidential nomination for Chase. Also present are Brisbane's notes summarizing his activities, 1834-1842; diaries, kept by Brisbane and other family members, 1844-1878; pro-slavery notes for the period prior to 1834; anti-slavery essays; sermons and addresses, 1844-1876; and clippings, biographical material, a few family letters and other miscellaneous items, including a minute book of Spring Green Baptist Church Women's Missionary Circle, 1875-1877. Brist, a three-term Democratic assemblyman for the 67th assembly district from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, documenting his political career. Files consist of legislation records organized by bill number, constituent correspondence referenced by last name and topic, news clippings, and newspaper columns authored by Brist. The bulk of the collection consists of papers from Brist's second and third terms in office (1982-1985) with only a limited amount of material from his first term (1976-1977). Brist was instrumental in creating legislation relating to securities, property and real estate, employee disclosure of improper activities in governmental units (whistleblower protection), and the designation of milk as the official state beverage. Other topics covered in the collection include marital property reform, changing the legal drinking age, mandatory seat belt usage, voter registration, abortion and wrongful birth, and groundwater pollution and waste management. |

| Brooks, George, 1897-1978 | Title: George Brooks Papers Physical Description: 1.0 cubic foot Call Number: MSS 080 Abstract: George Brooks (1897-1978) was a La Crosse, Wis., resident who worked at the Bodega Lunch Club, but was best known for training bloodhounds. From 1932 to about 1960, Brooks assisted law enforcement officials in over 3000 cases in tracking and apprehending criminal suspects and finding individuals who were lost. His most famous cases included the apprehension of Jens Thompson in 1937, a Freeborn, Minnesota, resident who shot four neighbors, and the 1939 tracking of Ray Olson in northern Wisconsin, who after shooting two deputies, was later killed while trying to escape. Brooks gained national fame, and articles about Brooks and his dogs appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Life Magazine, American Magazine, and Reader's Digest.. The collection includes correspondence (1938-1955), photographs (ca. 1930s-1950s) of dogs and pedigrees, the La Crosse area, and people. Most photographs are black and white, and the bulk of them do not include dates, names, or any type of caption. Other materials include publicity items (ca. 1930s-1950s) such as posters, a photocopy of a radio script, and other materials. |

The bulk of the collection deals with Brosius's dedication to physical fitness. General orders, letters of commendation from Army personnel, and a scrapbook document his work as an Army trainer, while correspondence and a scrapbook full of ephemera and photographs document his participation in the Olympics. Two other scrapbooks provide additional biographical information about Brosius; they include photographs, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and letters. There is no documentation of Brosius's service in the Spanish-American War nor the Mexican Border War, and only general orders convey a sense of Brosius's stateside movements during World War I. This collection also includes the music for “March of the Maccabees,” which Brosius wrote in 1904; military certificates of promotion; a certificate commemorating Brosius's twenty-fifth anniversary as a member of the American Legion; and a thank you card from General Charles King. |

Born in Menomonie, Wis., Browe married Ivy McClaine in 1923. The couple had five children. The papers relate to Browe's ministry and include church histories and anniversary programs from the Dunn County (Wis.) area, a diary (1952-1956), notes, and text of about eight hundred sermons written and delivered by Browe, as well as Browe's sermons for children (1959-1962). Most of of the sermons were sequentially numbered and many include notations regarding dates and locations of delivery. A “Pastor's Pocket Record and Ritual Book” (1936-circa 1965) includes a few records of marriages, baptisms, and funerals, some meditations, chronologies of sermon titles given, financial records, a record of church events, and an title list to numbered sermons. The title list to the numbered sermons has been photocopied and is separately foldered. |

Brown papers (1890-1925) include genealogical forms and notes, correspondence and financial records relating to the Dane County Bar Association, the Madison Literary Club, the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association, and United Bond and Mortgage Company. Charles N. Brown's diaries, and writings, are also included. The Irving Henry Brown papers consist of his diaries; drafts, copies, and reviews of his published writings on gypsies, as well as poetry, essays and lecture notes, and miscellany. The Nellie Melvina Williams Brown papers include financial records concerning her rental properties, writings and notes mainly from her years at the university, and miscellaneous family and school activities records. General correspondence concerns Brown family genealogy, the courtship of Charles and Nellie, Irving Brown's marital problems, and activities of other family members. The photographs include images of parks, roads, and lakes in the region of Madison, Wis., circa 1890-1915, probably made by Charles N. Brown in conjunction with the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association. |

(3 archives boxes) Call Number: Whitewater Mss AC Abstract: Papers of Brown, a Presbyterian pastor and local historian in Janesville and Beloit, Wisconsin; including family correspondence, clippings on Beloit history, and a large number of diaries and notebooks kept by Brown and his wife, Hila Bennett Brown. Hila Brown's diaries contain reports on her school, church, and musical activities prior to her marriage. William Brown's notebooks consist mainly of sermon ideas, financial accounts, business records concerning his father's property in Beloit, and genealogical information. The volume for the 1895 contains interesting diary entries made during a visit to the Stockbridge Indian Reservation. A typed copy of 1877 diary entries describes a camping trip to the Apostle Islands. One diary (1865) was kept by Belle Waterman whose relationship to the Browns has not been determined. |

Brown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, relating to his involvement with the Milwaukee area American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a Quaker political and philanthropic organization, and the World Federalist Association, an international peace, democracy and human rights federation. The papers consist primarily of committee rosters, briefings, memos, meeting agendas, and speeches, as well as leaflets and pamphlets related to AFSC campaigns arranged chronologically from 1979-1994. There is one folder of similar materials relating to the World Federalist Association. The papers document AFSC’s charitable work in the American Midwest, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, as well as the organization’s promotion of peace in America and abroad. Additionally, the papers document the structure of the organization and the Quaker ideologies that supported and motivated member activities. |

Included are correspondence; subject files concerning specific involvements such as the Milwaukee Board of Harbor Commissioners, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the 1948 Corporation; minutes; reports; numerous biographical clipping scrapbooks (on microfilm), testimonials, and other biographical information; and writings and speeches. The large file of writings and books by Bruce includes works on education and commercial organizations and draft chapters of an unpublished book on the Jewish question in the United States. Pertaining to the early history of the Bruce Publishing Company are financial ledgers and journals and examples of advertising materials. Later operations of the firm are documented by religious manuscripts published by the company (some by Fulton J. Sheen) and by runs of the Bruce Buzzer and Bruce Cooperator, employee newsletters, in the SHSW Library. Bruce's autobiography and other published writings are held by the SHSW Library. |
