Abstract: Records documenting the functions and activities of the Milwaukee chapter of Black and White Men Together (BWMT). BWMT-Milwaukee provided a safe environment for gay males, interracial couples, and individuals interested in interracial dating. It also raised awareness about and combated racism within Milwaukee's gay community and homophobia within its black community. The collection includes brochures and fliers, newsletters, correspondence between the Milwaukee chapter and the national association, agendas and minutes from membership and steering committee meetings, and information about the 1987 national convention held in Milwaukee. The collection also contains some general information about the national association (NABWMT).

Abstract: Interview abstracts and tape-recorded interviews with nineteen elderly residents of Grant and Vernon counties, Wisconsin concerning the substantial black communities in those two counties between 1850 and World War I. The interviews focus on domestic and social life, agricultural and other work, education, religion, relationships with white and black neighbors, genealogy, and the gradual movement to more urban areas which began at the turn of the century. The interviews were conducted by Zachary L. Cooper and Emilie Tari under grants from the Wisconsin American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Abstract: Papers of Creed C. Black, a journalist and editor, consisting of correspondence, clippings, memoranda, notes, speeches, and scrapbooks relating to several newspapers with which Black was associated: the Chicago Daily News, Nashville Tennessean, Paducah (Kentucky) Sun-Democrat, Savannah (Georgia) News-Press and Wilmington (Delaware) News-Journal. Also included are the files on his resignation from the DuPont-owned News-Journal, notebooks on his 1962 trip to Russia with the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and notes and interviews relating to a trip to the Middle East in 1958, American Press Institute, and a 1975 trip to China, as well as papers from his career as chairman and publisher of the Lexington (Kentucky) Herald-Leader.

Abstract: Papers of John D. Black, an agricultural economist who taught at Minnesota and Harvard and who studied, worked for, and influenced numerous government agencies concerned with agriculture. The collection documents Black's professional activities and includes material on topics related to domestic allotment plans, population and world food supply, land use policy, government agencies, the economics of developing nations, and nutrition during wartime.

Abstract: Interviews and sermons of Father James Groppi compiled by Edward H. Blackwell, one of the first African-American reporters for The Milwaukee Journal and the first with his own column. Blackwell wrote about the conditions of blacks in the South and reported on Father James Groppi’s efforts in the civil rights struggle in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, compiling these recordings for a proposed biography of Groppi which was never written.

Abstract: Papers of John J. Blaine, a Wisconsin progressive Republican state senator from Boscobel, 1909-1913, attorney general, 1919-1921, governor, 1921-1927, United States Senator, 1927-1933, and member of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, 1933-1934. The collection consists mainly of correspondence and eight volumes of speeches and relates chiefly to state finances and taxation, state social welfare matters, prohibition, law enforcement, education, politics, and, somewhat diffusely, the progressive movement. Over eighty percent of the papers relate to the six years of Blaine's governorship, and present a comprehensive picture of the legislation, political issues, and state administration during that period.

Abstract: Correspondence consisting of letters written to Miss Blair's mother, Lucy Bartlett of Orono and Old Town, Maine, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by the latter's father, Thomas Bartlett, and young brother George, in which references are made to the Aroostook boundary dispute, the lumber business on the Canadian border, and preparations to depart for Wisconsin. There are a number of other family letters; Miss Blair's own correspondence, 1876-1910, chiefly relating to her professional work at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; and a few records of the Young Women's Christian Association of Milwaukee and other Milwaukee social service organizations.

Abstract: Papers of a leader of the Wisconsin Communist Party, mainly consisting of correspondence, writings, biographical material, and subject files. Biographical material includes transcripts of two taped interviews (one of the tapes is in the collection) dealing with his views on politics and the Vietnam War and a film of a Great American Dream Machine (WNET-TV) episode based on his life. Correspondence, 1941-1979, is incomplete although it provides a picture of some party concerns. The later files are dominated by exchanges with a sister residing in Hungary. Writings, 1934-1979, include poetry and copies of speeches, articles, and press releases, many apparently written in behalf of the party. Of the subject files, the material on the Wisconsin Communist Party is most valuable. Here are included materials issued by the party which are not identified as having been written by Blair and clippings pertaining to the Wisconsin Gentile League and an advertisement placed in some Wisconsin newspapers.

Abstract: Papers of an Edgerton, Wisconsin, attorney and Republican assemblyman (1954-1962), primarily pertaining to his political career. Blanchard was chairman of the Assembly State Affairs and Rules Committees, a member of the Board of Government Operations, Republican Floor Leader of the Assembly in 1959, and Speaker of the Assembly from 1960 until his death in December 1962. In 1961-1962, he was chairman of the Joint Legislative Council and in 1960, chairman of the Platform Committee of the Wisconsin Republican Party, and a Richard M. Nixon delegate from Wisconsin's First Congressional District to the Republican national convention. The collection includes general correspondence on legislative and political topics; speeches, primarily delivered to constituent groups; campaign files; files on Republican Party state conventions and the 1960 national convention; and subject files on Assembly committees, legislation, and issues. Information is present on committee assignments, reapportionment, the Water Resources Committee of the Joint Legislative Council, Blachard's work on the Republican state platform committee (1960-1962), and his support for Warren Knowles for governor in 1962 and for Richard Nixon for president in 1960.

Abstract: Papers of a conservative Republican politician from Edgerton, Wisconsin, who served in the Wisconsin Legislature (1924-1932) and the House of Representatives (1932-1934). Included are constituent and personal correspondence, political files, speeches, and biographical clippings available on microfilm. Except for some 1934 clippings, the collection relates entirely to Blanchard's four terms in the legislature. Unfortunately this documentation consists primarily of constituent correspondence and it does not illuminate his important role in the factional struggles between Stalwart and Progressive Republicans. Of special note are minutes and other papers on the Interim Committee on Forestry and Public Lands for which Blanchard was the chairman. Political files comprised of correspondence, press releases, and speeches are best on his unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 1931. Prominent correspondents in this category include William J. Campbell.

Abstract: Papers of Blanding, a St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, businessman, land speculator, and local politician. Blanding's business and political correspondence, 1847-1901, financial papers, and land records comprise the bulk of the collection. Political letters relate mainly to local village and county offices held by Blanding and to his unsuccessful campaign for the state senate in 1894. Among other materials in the collection are a few letters and records relating to transportation and logging on the St. Croix River; plat maps of surveyed lands around the St. Croix Valley; minutes of the St. Croix Literary Association, 1870-1871; a few papers pertaining to the founding and development of the Polk County Agricultural Society, 1886-1901; manuscript articles on the temperance movement and on Indian and white traditions in the St. Croix region; genealogical data; and other family correspondence, 1901-1958.

Abstract: Papers of Margaret Gray Blanton, an author and wife of psychiatrist Smiley Blanton. Included are correspondence, 1911-1972, diaries, 1918-1972, manuscripts of her and her husband's writings, materials concerning their relationship with Sigmund Freud, and vast genealogical files on their ancestors in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, including copies of the accounts of two Baptist churches in Fayette County, Kentucky. Also included is a taped radio interview with Smiley Blanton for the Martha Dean Program about his book, The Healing Power of Poetry, 1961.

Blatz Brewing Company Title: Blatz Brewing Company Records, 1862-1944

Abstract: The majority of the collection consists of over three hundred accounting books that document the financial history of the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company. Most of the records are from the 1880s through the early 1920s, although some date as early as 1862 and as late as 1944. A variety of records are included in the collection, such as general ledgers and journals, cash books, inventory books, and cash customer journals. The records trace the history of the brewery, the bottling plant, various branches, and Valentin Blatz's Estate. The Blatz collection documents the company's rapid growth in the late nineteenth century, the sale of the business in 1890, the disposition of the Valentin Blatz estate, and the impact of the Prohibition movement. There is also extensive information pertaining to the beer bottling industry, including data about finances, vendors, customers, productions, product development, and sales. The records also demonstrate the complicated network of branches and depots that was in place as early as the 1880s.

Abstract: Political papers of Michael N. Bleicher, a Democratic Party activist, former state chairman of the Democratic Party (1978-1980), and mathematics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The collection documents Bleicher's service on the Democratic National Committee, his participation in several National Democratic Conventions as a delegate (1968-1976), and his support of various candidates for public office. Noteworthy campaigns Bleicher was involved with include the presidential campaigns of Eugene McCarthy (1968), George McGovern (1972), and Fred Harris (1976). Other campaign files are from Bleicher's position as campaign manager for Wisconsin Assembly candidate Midge Miller (1970) and Madison mayoral candidate Leo Cooper (1971). Also included are materials relating to Bleicher's tenure on the Energy Research Advisory Board and a small amount of material pertaining to Bleicher's mathematical career.

Abstract: Papers of Charlotte Anschuetz Bleistein, 1940-2003, granddaughter of Milwaukee attorney, Richard Elsner, and an attorney in her own right with a law practice in Greendale, Wisconsin. Bleistein graduated from Washington University in 1939 and worked as a review attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in the early 1940s. The papers principally document her involvement with the Greater Milwaukee United Nations Association (GMUNA) and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee native who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in England, France, and Switzerland in 1945-1946 and served as a radio/teletype operator. The collection is made up of photocopies of three memoirs written by Blessing entitled “Coming of Age in the 1930's,” “A Yank on the Homefront, 1943-1945” and “A Yank Abroad, 1945-1946.” Blessing wrote frequently during his enlistment to family and friends in Milwaukee and kept many diaries. Included with the collection is the original correspondence and diaries as well as typed transcripts. It is principally from these transcripts that the memoirs were derived.

Abstract: Business papers of Bliss, a La Crosse, Wisconsin, civil engineer, surveyor, and land agent. Correspondence deals with payment of taxes, rentals, collections, and western Wisconsin and southern Minnesota real estate transactions, with occasional reference to Bliss's position as city engineer. There are letters from Cadwallader C. Washburn, Levi Burnell, and Samuel D. Hastings concerning business affairs, and from Senator Angus Cameron in regard to the La Crosse post office building. In addition to the correspondence, there are bound and unbound deeds, abstracts, land plats, surveyors' field notes, office accounts, and other similar papers accumulated or produced by Bliss and his associates in their various business enterprises.

Abstract: Papers of a public relations consultant, consisting chiefly of material on the International Public Relations Association, an organization of which he was a founder and president. The three boxes of IRPA material include correspondence, minutes, reports, bulletins, and working papers for the magazine Communique. A smaller group of papers relate to Bliss' activities in behalf of the Public Relations Society of America and the Third World Congress of Public Relations and to a public relations course taught at Cornell niversity. Abstract: Personal and professional papers of an innovative and talented composer, lyricist, and librettist best known for his concern with making his work socially as well as artistically significant. The collection provides particularly interesting documentation of the creative process of composition and of Blitzstein's efforts to reconcile the political, psychological, and musical aspects of composition. Blitzstein was most famous for his operas The Cradle Will Rock, a controversial work produced for the Federal Theatre Project in 1937, Regina (1949), Reuben, Reuben (1955), and Juno (1959); his motion picture score for Native Land (Frontier Films, 1942); The Airborne Symphony (1946); and his very successful adaptation of The Threepenny Opera (1954). The collection is comprised chiefly of scores and scripts, with related correspondence, research material, and clippings, pertaining to Blitzstein's work in motion pictures, opera, ballet, theater, and symphonic orchestra. Also included are personal papers such as correspondence, contracts, notebooks and journals concerning his travels, writings and lecture materials, and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and memorabilia. Papers of Blitzstein's wife, Eva Goldbeck (1901-1936), including many personal letters, journals, and unpublished writings, are also present. There are tape and disc recordings of performances or excerpts of many of Blitzstein's works, including The Airborne Symphony (complete 1946 recordings of its world premiere performance by the New York Symphony Orchestra, and by the NBC Symphony Orchestra for General Motors' Symphony of the Air, The Cradle Will Rock, Freedom Morning, I've Got the Tune, Juno, “Mother Courage,” Native Land, No for an Answer, Reuben, Reuben, Regina, This Is the Garden, and Valley Town. Also on tape are interviews with Blitzstein, July 29, 1943; and with opera singer Lina Abarbanell.

Abstract: The collection contains the letters of science fiction novelist Robert Bloch, best known for his 1959 book Psycho. The letters, written to Vernon Shea and Bruce Walker, are of a personal nature, although they contain a good deal of information on the science fiction writing community of the time, particularly the writings of Harlan Ellison, Phillip Jose Farmer, H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and other of Bloch's works. Included is a short screenplay by Vernon Shea and Bloch's critique.

Abstract: Papers of Blood, a surveyor in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, active as early as 1836. Included are sketches and survey maps (some in watercolor), descriptions of interior lines, and field notes primarily for Waukesha County, but also relating to portions of Milwaukee, Racine, and Walworth counties. In addition there are lists of property owners, assessment rates, and legal descriptions of property for parts of Waukesha County. Personal material includes a notebook of surveying assignments at Chester Academy, 1836, and a docket book, 1844-1861, for School District No. 6, Town of Vernon, for which Blood was the clerk, including accounts and narrative school reports. The Town of Muskego survey notebook includes two lists of names, circa 1863, probably from the Town of Vernon, that contain information on military status including age, place of birth, occupation, and physical impairments.

Abstract: Papers of a producer of many award-winning Broadway plays and musicals. Although the amount and type of documentation present varies for each play, the collection includes correspondence, scripts, promotion and reviews, and various kinds of production files. For several titles there are floor plans, elevations, drawings and sketches, costume materials, light plots, property and furniture plots, and prompt books. In addition, legal and business aspects of production are extensively documented by financial statements, budgets, contracts and agreements, tax forms, and royalty statements. Among the productions treated are Another Part of the Forest (1946), The Autumn Garden (1951), The Children's Hour (1952), Command Decision (1947), The Crucible (1953), Death of a Salesman (1949), Deep Are the Roots (1945), The Diary of Anne Frank (1955), Equus (1974), Hot L Baltimore (1973), The Lark (1955), Look Homeward, Angel (1957), The Most Happy Fella (1956), The Music Man (1957), The Shrike (1952), and Toys in the Attic (1960). Prominent correspondents in the files include Jean Anouilh, Leonard Bernstein, Melvyn Douglas, Ketti Frings, Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Julie Harris, Rex Harrison, Lillian Hellman, George Roy Hill, Garson Kanin, Joshua Logan, and Anthony Perkins. Also present are correspondence, reports, and scripts for plays which Bloombarden only considered for production, many of which were written by noteworthy playwrights. Personal papers and general business records document Bloomgarden's investments and finances, his work with various theatrical and other organizations, the Kergan Corporation, and Kermit Bloomgarden Productions, Inc. Correspondence with Melina Mercouri, Arthur Miller, and John and Marguerite Sanford is also included.

Abstract: Incomplete papers of Frederick A. Blossom, a social activist, translator, and librarian active in a variety of areas. Included is correspondence, mainly with his mother Sarah, two of his three wives, and his daughter Sidney; his mother's diaries; brief financial papers; notebooks; a scrapbook; and a subject file documenting his many-faceted career and interests. Also present are files on his translations of works by Marcel Proust and Maxence van der Meersch, and concerning his work at the Library of Congress and his support of Margaret Sanger's birth control campaign, the Industrial Workers of the World, and the Southern Conference Educational Fund. Also represented are Blossom's connections with Scott Nearing and suffrage leader Elizabeth Stuyvesant.

Abstract: Scrapbooks kept by Daniel Blum, theatrical producer and publisher of Theatre World (1944-1965), Screen World (1950-1965), and Opera World (1952-1954). These microfilmed scrapbooks contain playbills, reviews, clippings, and obituaries of famous actors, actresses, and film and theater personalities. A small group of the scrapbooks concerns athletes, and another group contains “Autograms,” stars' answers to a few short questions posed by Blum. Most of the theatrical performances documented were for legitimate theater performances in New York City, though other cities are represented as are some revues and vaudeville productions.
