Biography/History

Glen E. Pommerening was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 27, 1927. In 1950 he received a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin and an LL.D. in 1953. Until his election to the state Assembly in 1954, he practiced law. In the Assembly he represented the 20th District of Milwaukee (City of Wauwatosa) for six terms, through 1967. Currently Mr. Pommerening is serving in the Wisconsin Department of Administration.

While in the Assembly he served on a number of legislative committees, of which the following are some of the more prominent.

  1. Board on Government Operations (vice-chm., 1963)
  2. Building Commission (vice-chm., 1963, 1965)
  3. Joint Committee on Finance (chm., 1963)
  4. Legislative Council and Committee of 25 (during the 1963-1965 interim)
  5. Tax Compromise Committees (member, 1963, 1965)
Scope and Content Note

The collection consists almost equally of correspondence and the reports of legislative committees and commissions with which Assemblyman Pommerening was involved from 1961 to 1965. More than two-thirds of the correspondence is for the year 1963. Most of the letters are from his Wauwatosa constituents, in which they state their views on such issues as the mental health program and the licensing of T.V. repairmen; there are also requests for copies of the Blue Book, for guided tours through the state capitol, or for help in obtaining admittance to the University of Wisconsin.

Correspondence dealing with certain bills has been filed separately under subject headings. For instance, the papers contain files on some legislative bills of 1963, such as the state Blue Cross-Blue Shield program (131-A), the Minimum Age to Purchase Alcoholic Beverages bill (132-A), the Fair Housing Bill (367-A), the bill to allow redemption of trading stamps for merchandise (543-A), and the Concession Phone Service bill (866-A).

Legislative reports have been broken down into two catagories - legislative committees and legislative commissions. Committee reports include those of such committees as the Tax Compromise Committee, 1963, and the Committee on Elections, 1963. Commission reports include those of such commissions as the Board on Government Operations, 1963-1964, and the Building Commission, 1963-1965.

No personal papers are included in the Pommerening collection. Although replies to constituents were frequently made from Pommerening's office, they seem to be form letters provided by a secretary or an assistant.
