Abstract:

Papers of Joe Mills, a conservationist and chairman of the Wild Rivers Committee of the Sierra Club’s John Muir Chapter, concerning the passage in 1968 of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, which pertained to three rivers in Wisconsin: the Wolf, St. Croix, and Namekagon. The papers also reflect Mills' personal outdoor ethic and his passionate argument for the preservation of wilderness. Reference files contain material on wild rivers in several states.

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence files which contain exchanges with Walter Scott (Wisconsin Conservation Department) and Harold C. Jordahl, Jr. (Department of the Interior). There is also information on the Wisconsin Wild Rivers Conference held in 1964; an article written by Mills called “Canoeing the Wild Rivers Pine and Popple” and the raw research data on which this article was based: a highly detailed log of a 1967 canoe trip on the rivers; and a file on the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act Committee (the funding source for implementation of the Wild Rivers bill).
