Abstract:

Records of the UWM chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, including materials regarding the establishment of the chapter. The collection largely documents the selection of students and faculty for Phi Kappa Phi membership. The collection contains minutes, which include committee reports; initiation programs and membership lists; constitution and by-laws; correspondence, mainly regarding membership, initiation and chapter activities; some brochures, program materials, and a guide for planning chapter activities; handbooks from the national office; and a number of miscellaneous items.

The UWM chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor society was organized in 1960, but did not received its charter from the national organization until 1962.

Phi Kappa Phi's beginnings date to the establishment in 1897 of a student group at the University of Maine devoted to the recognition of scholarship in all disciplines. Shortly afterward a national organization was formed.

Phi Kappa Phi recognizes superior scholarship in all fields of study. Distinguished students and faculty are elected into membership.

The files are organized alphabetically folder title, then chronologically.

Acquisition Information

Bruce Maas transfered part of the collection to the Archives in 1989; an unknown donor transferred the remainder of collection to the Archives prior to 1989.

Christel T. Maass processed the collection at the Archives in April 1995.
