Abstract: One of a series of tape-recorded oral interviews conducted with union leaders by James A. Cavanaugh of the Historical Society staff, documenting the origins, growth, and decline of the TWUA, internal disputes, relations with other unions, and organizing drives. The interviews document textile unionism prior to the formation of the TWUA, as well as discussing major strikes and gains made through collective bargaining. Specific references are made to organizing activities in Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The Paul Swaity interview is part of the Textile Workers Union of America Oral History Project.

Abstract: Papers, circa 1831-1991, of Alfred Wilson Swan, a Madison, Wisconsin United Church of Christ pastor who served at the Forest Lawn Presbyterian Church (Marion, Ohio), Park Congregational Church (Greely, Colorado), and the First Congregational Church (Madison, Wisconsin), documenting Swan's sermons and writings, and the membership at these churches. Also included are papers related to Swan's family and his great grandfather, Matthew Wilson (1811-1892), a portrait artist who painted the last portrait from life of Abraham Lincoln in March 1865.

Abstract: Legislative papers of James D. Swan, a conservative Republican politician and farmer from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, who served in the State Senate from 1967 through 1974. Swan was well known for his fiscal conservatism; the collection includes files from his term as vice-chairman of the Joint Committee on Finance in 1973. His views are also well documented in files on the University of Wisconsin and anti-war disruptions on campus, the Equal Rights Amendment, welfare, and taxation. Other topics with extensive coverage include the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the Committee to Visit State Properties, and the State Building Commission. There are also files on Republican politics, on Swan's 1970 and 1974 reelection campaigns, and some personal materials.

Abstract: Interview conducted by Dale Treleven of the Historical Society staff with Swanton, long-time executive secretary of the Wisconsin Council of Agricultural Cooperatives; concerning rural life as Swanton knew it in his youth in the Town of Blooming Grove, Dane County, Wisconsin; education in a one-room school, at the Wisconsin Academy, and at the University of Wisconsin; his farming experiences from World War I to 1966, the formation and development of many farm cooperatives, the Wisconsin Employment Peace Act of 1939, the National Farmers Organization, and other topics.

Abstract: Papers, primarily composed of addresses, sermons, and reference material, of a prominent Madison, Wisconsin rabbi, Jewish spiritual leader, scholar, and community activist. The majority of his addresses and sermons date from the 1960s and 1970s and in 1981 were compiled into a book, Intimates and Ultimates. The book manuscript is also present in the collection, as are some personal papers. The latter include biographical materials, memorial tributes, a small amount of correspondence, honorary degrees and records of Rabbi Swarsensky's two trips to Berlin during the 1970s. Rabbi Swarsensky's records of Madison Jewish community activities include dedication ceremony files, temple bulletins, and president's reports of Temple Beth El, a Reform congregation, a few materials documenting the restoration of the Gates of Heaven synagogue, cemetery records, and items from the American Jewish Tercentenary. The majority of the collection is composed of Swarsensky's reference files of clippings, near-print materials, and notes gathered for use in sermons, speeches, and writings. Four speeches are available on tape, as is a recording of a memorial service for Rabbi Swarsensky at Beth El Temple, November 22, 1981.

Abstract: Interview conducted on July 27, 1979 by Sara Leuchter of the Historical Society staff with Nathan Sweet for the Wisconsin Jewish Archives; concerning his youth in Kapule, Russia, his escape to London, Yiddish plays he saw there, his coming to Madison, Wisconsin in 1908, the Madison Jewish community, and the anti-Semitic feelings of some of his fellow workers.

Abstract: Collection of materials pertaining to Walter M. Swietlik, who served as Milwaukee's commissioner of Public Works from 1940 to 1956. The collection includes biographical information, certificates, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and some miscellaneous materials. The collection contains some documentation of Swietlik's school and United States Army service years, but most of the collection pertains to his days as Milwaukee's commissioner of Public Works. The collection includes images of Milwaukee's Dept. of Public Works and city personnel, including Frank Zeidler, as well as images of downtown Milwaukee, including city hall and the Mecca Arena.

Abstract: Papers of a public relations pioneer who was a founder and chairman of the board of Carl Byoir & Associates, Inc. The collection dates primarily from the early 1950's and consists of Swinehart's speeches and promotional programs for clients such as the American Can Co., Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co., Mutual Insurance, and the Tile Council of America; the programs fail to indicate, however, if Swinehart personally prepared them or merely supervised their preparation. Also included is a folder of correspondence with University of Wisconsin professor Scott Cutlip concerning research on Byoir.
