Abstract: Papers of a Barron County, Wisconsin state assemblyman, consisting of campaign materials, correspondence, and an obituary. The campaign materials include a newspaper clipping announcing St. Angelo's decision to seek the assembly seat in 1960 and two campaign brochures dated 1960 and 1962 respectively. The correspondence comprises the bulk of the collection and is composed of alphabetical constituent correspondence and St. Angelo's replies for the years 1962-1963. Among the subjects discussed are lowering the drinking age, the sales tax and oleo margarine controversies, the problems of maintaining effective education in northern Wisconsin, and retention of the Barron County Teachers College in Rice Lake.

Abstract: Photocopies of transcripts from forty-seven oral history interviews pertaining to Saint Croix County, Wisconsin history conducted as a project of the St. Croix County Extension Homemakers. Although farm and daily work, recreation, education, and family life were discussed, the interviews focus on description and history of various cities, villages, and townships in the county. These include the cities or villages of Baldwin, Burkhardt, Deer Park, Erin, Glenwood City, Hammond, New Richmond, Pleasant Valley, Wildwood, and Woodville; and the townships of Cylon, Erin, Hudson, Kinnickinnic, Pleasant Valley, Springfield, and Troy. One interview relates to the Mann Valley Cemetery and nearby German settlement.

Abstract: The St. Francis School of Nursing operated in La Crosse, Wisconsin, from 1902 to 1970, and was associated with St. Francis Hospital (now Franciscan Skemp Health Care), Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and Viterbo College (now Viterbo University). Materials of the School of Nursing include historical photographs, newspaper clippings about the school and students, bulletins and promotional materials, handbooks for students, biographical information on nursing faculty, clippings and other miscellaneous information about St. Francis Hospital. Also included are records of the St. Francis Alumnae Association, the nursing school’s alumni group, which include constitution/bylaws, historical materials, and homecoming booklets (1943, 1947, 1963, 1970, and 1983).

Abstract: Records of a church and its founders, an association of Roman Catholic emigrants from Freiburg, Germany, led by Father Ambrose Oschwald, who sought a religious environment and practiced a communal economic system. Available in paper form is a copy of the articles of agreement governing the colony and a newsclipping on finding the articles in Manitowoc County, Wis., Circuit Court files. On microfilm is a published history, a chronicle book, financial records, a pastor's diary (1884-1890), and records of land transactions and other activities. Much of the collection is in German. The collection documents the establishment of the village of St. Nazianz in 1854, building of the church in 1866, dissension within the church over communal property ownership and transfer of property to a corporate entity known as the Roman Catholic Religious Society of St. Nazianz, and an 1896 agreement with the Society of the Divine Savior in Rome to provide spiritual and temporal care for members in exchange for property rights.

Included is a certificate of incorporation of St. Joseph's School (1899); volume of minutes, articles of incorporation, and by-laws of the St. Joseph's Nurses Alumni Association (1914-1924); and lists of graduates of St. Joseph's and Trinity Schools. Each list also gives the married names and addresses of many of the nurses.

The congregation became St. Luke's Lutheran Church in 1909 and St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1966. It is affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The records include sacramental records, nineteenth century family membership records, and copies of 1898 articles of reorganization and of other legal documents, 1922. Most of the entries are in German.

The congregation, begun in 1856 under the name La Crosse Second Church and later known as the Caledonia Street Methodist Church, is still active and is affiliated with the United Methodists. Records include historical materials, including photographs, clippings and historical booklets, as well as materials related to buildings and grounds, Christian Education, events, financial materials, membership, a few sacramental records (1897-1918), church clubs, the West Wisconsin Methodist Conference, and the Bice Family (a family with a long association with the church).

There are also some materials relating to nursing education elsewhere in Wisconsin.

The records were filmed from several bound volumes kept by the minister and the microfilm reflects the inherent order of those books. The earliest records are congregational minutes which span from 1870-1881. Sacramental records date from 1873-1898 and include baptisms (1873-1898), marriages (1881-1898), burials (1888-1898), confirmands (1882-1898), communion records (1877-1898), members of the congregation, members who have left the congregation, and holy events. All records are written in the Norwegian language.

Abstract: Legal papers, trial transcripts, memoranda, exhibits, correspondence, and reference material created and collected by Willard S. Stafford and other members of the law firm of Stafford, Rosenbaum, Rieser, and Hansen, in preparation for the 1966 trial of the case State of Wisconsin vs. Milwaukee Braves, Inc., et al. The case involved Wisconsin's attempt to prevent the Braves National League baseball team from moving to Atlanta, Georgia. Stafford served as special counsel to the state attorney general (plaintiff) during the trial of alleged violations of the state's anti-trust laws.

Abstract: Papers of Democratic State Senator and U.S. Congressman Lynn Stalbaum, representative of Wisconsin's 21st Senate District from 1954-1963 and the 1st Congressional District from 1964-1965. (Stalbaum unsuccessfully ran for re-election in 1966 and 1968.) The collection documents his political career, especially his campaigns, as well as issues of interest to his constituents. Included are press releases; newsletters; clippings; speeches; campaign materials; photographs; legislative, topical, constituent, and campaign correspondence; statements and testimony before committees; and project files. Of note is a file devoted to Stalbaum's work as chairman of the “Wisconsin Harriman for President Committee” containing Stalbaum's correspondence and Averell Harriman campaign material.

Abstract: Papers of Jeremiah Stamler, a distinguished Chicago physician and cardiovascular researcher who refused to testify at a 1965 hearing of the House Un-American Activities Committee and instead filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Committee. The collection includes legal papers from the three lawsuits involved: the original suit, Stamler vs. Willis, the Committee's criminal contempt of Congress suit, U.S. vs. Stamler, and a counterclaim, Stamler vs. U.S. The lawsuits were joined by Dr. Stamler's research assistant, Yolanda Hall, and intervening plaintiff Milton M. Cohen. Also present are a few personal materials, and research materials and photographs of the HUAC hearing in Chicago created and collected by Stamler's lawyers, Albert E. Jenner, Jr., Thomas P. Sullivan, and Chester Kamin. Included is a major statistical study conducted by Dr. Hans Zeisel, University of Chicago, of the effects of the Committee's subpoena power and the results of testifying or refusing to testify at a HUAC hearing. In 1973, after the House Committee on Committees unanimously recommended that the government's lawsuit be dropped and the Committee be eliminated, the suit was dismissed at the government's request. Subsequently, Stamler and Hall withdrew their civil suits.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1930-1935, of Fredrick J. Stare, a biochemist and physician originally from Columbus, Wisconsin, entirely concerning his undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Wisconsin and his National Research Council fellowship at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Included are personal correspondence, records concerning the Kappa Sigma social fraternity, and research and professional material. The personal correspondence includes exchanges with his father, Fredrick A. Stare, and other family members; his fiancee (Joyce Love Allen, daughter of Governor Oscar Allen of Louisiana); numerous fraternity brothers such as University of Wisconsin Dean Scott Goodnight; and other friends. Kappa Sigma files, which make up half of the collection, include planning files for the 1933 national conclave held in Madison, correspondence, reports on individual students, and other documentation pertaining to his preceptorship in the fraternity house. The research files are incomplete but include exchanges with Conrad A. Elvehjem, his doctoral advisor, and other scientists at the University of Wisconsin and elsewhere.

Abstract: Papers of Joseph Starobin, a leftist writer, university professor, and activist who associated with many Communist Party leaders throughout the world and who attempted to arrange peace talks between North Vietnam and the United States during the Vietnam War. He served as a professor of political science at York University in Toronto from 1968 to 1976; edited and wrote for Communist publications, including The New Masses (1939-1942) and The Daily Worker (1942-1954); and was a member of the Communist Party from 1934 to 1954. The collection consists primarily of personal, business, and political correspondence, with the bulk of materials dating from 1954 to 1976. Included are letters from political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski, Senator J.W. Fulbright, columnist James B. Reston, historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and a 1962 letter from author Doris Lessing. Also included are manuscripts and writings by Starobin and others, and subject files.

Abstract: Papers of Starr, a lumberman and real estate investor, relating to the timber and land holdings of the Davis and Starr Lumber Company of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; other business investments in Wisconsin, Louisiana, and California; and the management of his estate after his death. Also present are papers of companies with which Starr was closely affiliated: the Weston Heights Stock Farm and the Weston Orchard Company, both in Dunn County, Wis., 1919-1927; the California Forest Protective Association, 1922-1926; and the Florence-Louisiana Company, 1920-1935; and documentation of other real estate holdings in Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, and elsewhere. Correspondence, financial and legal records, minutes, and other papers are included, much of it relating to insurance and tax matters, rentals and sales, mortgages, and similar matters. Business associates included A. L. Arpin, C. T. Bundy, Burt E. DeYo, J.D.R. Steven, and staff of the Red River Lumber Company representing the California timber interests of T. B. Walker. J. B. Tasker managed the stock farm and reported regularly on cultivation and the Hereford cattle there. Paul Grant corresponded with Steven, executor of the Starr estate, on the apple orchard operations.

Abstract: Records of an organization founded as the Wisconsin Bar Association which in 1957 became the integrated bar for Wisconsin to which all lawyers were required to belong. The records include convention proceedings (1933-1947), the Board of Governors minutes (1939-1948), correspondence of the president's office (1933-1945), and records of the secretary-treasurer (1913-1948). The records document the lobbying efforts by the association to establish an integrated bar, activities of the American Bar Association and Wisconsin county associations, membership campaigns, and financial activities of the organization.

Abstract: Accession master lists, accession number assignment logs, and completed accession forms recording library, museum, sites, and manuscripts (private papers) acquisitions from donors. (Government records accessions are part of a separate system.) Created originally by the Office of Field Services (later a division), the collecting arm of the Historical Society, the records diminish in completeness as the various collecting programs within the Society assumed responsibility for this function and the associated record keeping. In 1982, the Archives Division absorbed Field Services and subsequently that staff's collecting and accessioning focused entirely on manuscripts. By 1992, procedures and record keeping practices changed significantly and this series was discontinued.

The collection documents the Society's governance and activities, and changes in Wisconsin physicians' concerns, attitudes, and practices over the years. It contains extensive information on the early development of prepaid sickness insurance plans; the development and administration of Wisconsin Physicians Service insurance plans; distribution of medical care to the poor in Wisconsin, especially before World War II; medical malpractice issues, including the founding of the Wisconsin Health Care Liability Insurance Plan (WHCLIP); and the Society's attempts to monitor chiropractors and homeopathic health practitioners. The records also contain biographical information on many deceased physicians who were members.

Abstract: Mainly correspondence, 1834-1860, of Thomas Steel, a Waukesha County, Wisconsin, physician and farmer with his family in England, describing his voyages to India and China as a ship's doctor and his efforts to find a fruitful medical practice in the United States and Canada. Later letters comment on his struggles to homestead and eke out a living as a rural physician; some discuss the Socialist Society of Equality, a group with which Steel immigrated to Wisconsin in 1843 to establish a socialistic community. Other letters mention local and national political affairs. There is also a folder of miscellaneous legal documents, including an agreement written in Middle English, November 9, 1660, concerning the use of land at Inveraray, Scotland.

Abstract: Fragmentary papers, mainly 1849-1907, of Halle Steensland, a prominent Norwegian immigrant and Madison, Wisconsin businessman who was a founder of the Hekla Fire Insurance Company and the Savings, Loan and Trust Company Bank and who served as vice-consul for Sweden and Norway for many years. The papers, which are written in Norwegian and English, consist of correspondence, official documents and certificates, speeches, biographical clippings, and a brief journal. Also included is a biography of Steensland by Byron C. Ostby and a transcription of all documents by Oskar Garstein. The correspondence, which was primarily written to Steensland during the 1850s and 1860s consists of letters from his family in Norway and from friends who were also Norwegian immigrants. Photographs include the Steensland family and homes in Maple Bluff, Wis., and the Wisconsin Governor's Mansion and Tenney Park, Madison, Wis.

Abstract: Congressional office papers of William Albert Steiger of Oshkosh, who represented Wisconsin's Sixth Congressional District, 1967-1978. Included are correspondence to and from constituents, colleagues, and governmental agencies; working files on legislation supported or introduced by Steiger; files on local grants and issues; press material and information; reference materials; and correspondent indexes. Brief personal files relate to his first term in Congress and to his prior career in the Wisconsin Assembly and as a leader in Republican student politics. The files are generally arranged by function or by subject, with indexes to individual correspondents. Documentation is extensive on a number of legislative initiatives with which Steiger was connected: the Williams-Steiger Bill, which established OSHA, and the Steiger Amendment which reduced capital gains taxation in 1978. There are also files on the all-volunteer army of the post-Watergate era and congressional reform. Arising from his membership on the Education and Labor and the Ways and Means committees are files on his interest in manpower legislation and legal services for the poor. There are also substantial files of correspondence on issues which stirred general constituent interest during his term in office such as abortion, environment, Watergate and Vietnam. The press material includes press releases, newsletters (additional titles are available on microfilm in the SHSW Library), clippings, speeches, and statements. Extensively weeded case files primarily concern the Selective Service and Vietnamese immigration.

Abstract: Papers of a playwright, screenwriter, and Tony-winning librettist, consisting of scripts, revisions, outlines, correspondence, routines, lyrics, programs, photographs, reviews, and financial records for works in various genre for which Stein was writer or collaborator. Among the plays represented are Enter Laughing, (1963), Fiddler on the Roof (1964), Juno (1959), Lend an Ear (1948), Mr. Wonderful (1956), No Time for Sergeants (1955), Plain and Fancy (1955), Take Me Along (1959), and Zorba (1968). Stein also adapted Enter Laughing (Col., 1967) and Fiddler on the Roof (UA, 1971) for the screen, and scripts are included for both these titles. During the 1940's and 1950's he wrote extensively for radio and television. Well represented are contributions to The Henry Morgan Show (ABC), NBC Comedy Hour,Your Show of Shows (NBC), and numerous other series, specials, and routines for performers such as Tallulah Bankhead, Hildegrade, and others.

Abstract: Papers of a Republican legislator from Oshkosh who served in the State Senate and Assembly, 1966-1974. Included are legislative bill files, constituent correspondence, subject files, and documentation on committee assignments such as the Senate Urban Affairs Committee and the Legislative Council's Advisory Committee on Court Reorganization and its Special Committee on Criminal Penalties. The urban affairs files include minutes, agendas, and memoranda of the Wisconsin Housing Finance Authority collected by Steinhilber as an authority member for his investigation in the propriety of the agency's financial activities. An audio recording of the public hearing held as part of this investigation is included with the collection.

Abstract: Research of Anthony Stelter for his booklet All Roads Lead to Hope Valley: A Look at Black and Tri-Racial Migration to the Hope Valley Located in the Forest Township of Vernon County, Wisconsin. Hope Valley was settled by a mix of Black, White, and Native American settlers who peacefully co-existed until ca. 1900 when racial tensions began to escalate. Stelter, a descendant of the Walden family, documents the histories of various extended families residing in Hope Valley in 1899, principally the Revels, Walden, Shivers, and Roberts families. Included are papers relating to the churches and schools in the Hope Valley area and genealogical materials on individual family members including notes, news clippings, school and cemetery records, and other biographical information. The tape recording is an interview with Gen Roberts (2000) during a drive through Hope Valley in which Roberts recounts the history of the area and various anecdotes regarding life in the community.

Abstract: Photographs taken by Milwaukee activist, Al Stergar, that document various social justice events. Some of the most thoroughly documented events are Milwaukee area protests including anti-war demonstrations, anti-apartheid demonstrations, labor strikes, Native American demonstrations, anti-racism demonstrations, and demonstrations against the U.S. policy on Central America. There are also photographs that depict the Latin American community in Milwaukee, the United Community Center, and various activists, speakers, and political figures who spoke at or attended Milwaukee events. These figures include Amiri Baraka, Jimmy Carter, Jaime Escalante, Jane Fonda, Magic Johnson, and Dr. Spock. In some cases there is a concise description of the event written by Al Stergar on the back of the photograph.

Abstract: Records of the Stern Fund, a philanthropic foundation established by Edgar and Edith Stern in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1936. In its early years, the Fund mainly supported New Orleans organizations, especially those related to the arts and the education of African Americans. Later, the Fund touched a wide variety of groups and projects, particularly fledgling organizations working for social change. The bulk of the collection consists of grant files and documents applicants to the foundation's funding programs.

Abstract: One of a series of tape-recorded oral interviews conducted with Textile Workers Union of America leaders by James A. Cavanaugh of the Historical Society staff, documenting the origins, growth, and decline of the TWUA, internal disputes, relations with other unions, and organizing drives. The interviews document textile unionism prior to the formation of the TWUA, as well as discussing major strikes and gains made through collective bargaining. Specific references are made to organizing activities in Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The Sol Stetin interview is part of the Textile Workers Union of America Oral History Project.

Abstract: Correspondence of Steven, an Eau Claire, Wis., businessman involved in lumbering and retail selling. Letterbooks detail Steven's lumbering enterprises, land and lumber transactions, and deeds of sales. In May 1890, Steven began work in the office of Davis and Starr Lumber Company. In 1907, Steven organized the Steven and Jarvis Lumber Company, with Arthur Jarvis, to deal in wholesale lumber. Steven was also involved with the Eau Claire Book and Stationery Company, and became vice-president in 1917 and president in 1921, succeeding William J. Starr.

Abstract: Papers of Philip E. Stevenson, a writer and editor on social justice and labor, who was blacklisted for his refusal to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1951. The collection best illustrates Stevenson's career as a writer and his interests in the American Southwest, the labor struggles of the New Mexican coal miners, culture and aesthetic theories, and the House Un-American Activities Committee. There is little directly concerning the Hollywood Ten. The largest portion of the collection consists of drafts of five volumes comprising The Seed, which were Morning Noon and Night, Out of the Dust, Old Father Antic, The Hoax, and The Sowing. Other major works documented in the collection are the novels The Edge of the Nest, The Gospel According to St. Luke's, and “The Pig-Iron Venus” (unpublished). A small administrative file of letters, subscriptions, and draft articles submitted for publication reflects Stevenson's work as co-founder and editor of the California Quarterly. On tape is a memorial service for Stevenson. The photographs include family snapshots; albums of photos from a 1912 family European trip and from Stevenson's World War I service; and photos of Paris (1919), Saranac Lake, New York (1920), the Southwest (1930s-1950s), and the Zuni Indian Reservation (1933).

Abstract: Papers of a physician, pharmacist, and author who worked to establish standards for pharmaceutical preparations, change existing patent and trademark laws, and increase the level of cooperation between physicians and pharmacists. Stewart founded scientific departments at Parke, Davis and Company, Frederick Sterns and Company, and H.K. Mulford Company, and was active in numerous professional associations. The collection includes a large correspondence file and records pertaining to Stewart's employment, both as a physician and with pharmaceutical firms. It also contains correspondence, committee reports, articles, and research materials relating to Stewart's work with the American Medical Editors Association, the American Pharmaceutical Association, and the American Pharmacologic Society. Abstract: Papers of Isaac Stewart, an educator of Waukesha County and Appleton, Wisconsin, and of his sister Mary, both of whom were at times editorial writers for the Milwaukee Journal. The correspondence includes family letters, letters describing life at the University of Wisconsin about 1860, some Civil War correspondence and diaries; letters from May Wright Sewall before her marriage; and letters received by Miss Stewart from journalists and publishers. There are a few articles mostly reminiscent of early life in the region of Pewaukee, Wisconsin; Miss Stewart's records of her visits to expositions; and a volume of records of Christ Church, Pompey, New York, 1828-1842, containing minutes of meetings and a register of births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths. The diaries describe Isaac Stewart's work as an army recruiter in Chicago, Ill. in 1862 and discuss his camp duties and efforts to be assigned to the front while at Camp Randall (Madison, Wis.), 1864.

Abstract: Personal, business, and political papers of James A. Stone, a Reedsburg, Wis. attorney who was active in the Wisconsin progressive movement, particularly in Sauk County. Throughout his active political career Stone maintained an correspondence with Wisconsin congressmen, notably John J. Esch, Merlin Hull, Paul O. Husting, A. W. Kopp, and Irvine L. Lenroot; members of the La Follette family; and national political figures. Stone was an active supporter of Robert La Follette and served as assistant secretary of state during his governorship, 1901-1903. Much of the business correspondence, 1892-1907, relates to Stone's law practice. It affords a view of the small town lawyer's activities, with emphasis on debt collection and land cases. Stone was also secretary of the Reedsburg Canning Company, member of the board of directors of the Harley-Davidson Company, and an investor in the Milwaukee Lead and Zinc Mining Company. Some correspondence relating to these business interests is included in the collection. Other letters document Stone's numerous educational and other civic activities in Reedsburg and his real estate investments.

Abstract: Twenty-seven leather bound volumes and numerous memoranda booklets kept by George L. Storer, Madison, Wisconsin, his wife Mary, and three of their children, John, Anna, and Mary Frankenburger. They document family financial affairs and financial transactions of the First Unitarian Society which George apparently served as treasurer. Included are records of real estate investments which include mortgages in Wisconsin and the Dakota Territory, rent received, and personal and household expenses. There are also two diaries kept by Mary Storer, 1906-1907, and the family bible, 1858-1945. George Storer retired to Madison after running a dry goods wholesale business in Sanford, Maine.

Summary: Two storytellers recorded supernatural stories from 6 individual tellers and a middle school group of 10-15 in Wisconsin's Iowa County during 1991-1992. They obtained over 50 stories and story segments including legends, urban legends, memorates, personal experience narratives, and superstitions featuring the Ridgeway ghost, ghostly animals, gamblers, vanishing hitchhikers, poltergeists, haunted houses, troubled deaths, and more. The interviewers transcribed the recorded stories and used them as the basis for versions they published in The Bookcase Ghost and tell to public audiences.

Abstract: Papers of Stowe, a Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II correspondent, radio broadcaster, lecturer, and educator, including personal papers as well as documents related to his articles, books, lectures, news stories, and broadcasts. Personal papers include biographical and genealogical information, interviews, correspondence with friends and family, photographs, and a copy of his FBI file and lengthy refutation of its allegations. There are also many love letters to and from his second wife. Other correspondence include letters from Max Ascoli, Carroll Binder, Alois Dersoe, Ralph Edwards, A.R. Holcombe, Wesley Maurer, Helen Rogers Reid, Dinah and Vincent Sheean, and DeWitt Wallace, as well as many other individuals of interest for their autograph value. The photographs include formal and informal portraits, as well as documentation of his career activities, particularly his coverage of the Greek-Albanian front during World War II. Pertaining to Stowe's career as a newspaperman are scrapbooks of clippings from the New York Herald-Tribune and the Chicago Daily News and loose clippings, copies of his post-war column for the New York Post Syndicate, and some draft stories. Records of freelance magazine work include draft and printed articles submitted to Argosy, The Reporter, and Reader's Digest. Radio scripts include wartime commentaries for ABC and post-war analyses sponsored by the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers Union that were broadcast on MBS. The collection includes limited drafts of published books, but there are reviews and reader correspondence for all titles. Supplementing the writings are unpublished memoirs and an autobiographical novel and many notebooks and journals about his coverage of the Spanish Civil War; the Russo-Finnish War; the Greek-Albanian front, 1939-1940; post-war Europe; and his travels as a writer for Reader's Digest. This section includes interviews with Aristide Briand, Gamal Abdel Nasser, John Pershing, Raymond Poincaré, the Shah of Iran, and Walter Ulbrich. Other documented aspects of his career include course outlines and teaching materials from his tenure at the Journalism School of the University of Michigan, transcripts and outlines for public lectures, and reports (1950 to 1954) prepared as a director of Radio Free Europe. Of special note is a group of four photographs of Charles Lindbergh, with Stowe and other individuals, taken in Paris in 1928. One of these images showing Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis has been autographed.

Beside family images, other photographs include pictures of the Shelby Dairy truck, the Stroeh farm in the town of Shelby, a Shelby fire truck, the La Crosse Garment Workers (1938), Hamilton Homemakers, and Shelby Homemakers. The collection includes personal notes, writings, and correspondence, as well as printed literature, and is most complete in its documentation of the printed informational materials produced for national distribution. There are also extensive materials relating to the local and regional groups in which Stromquist took an active part, in particular: Pitt Professional Union, American Federation of Teachers; Milwaukee Independent School, Free University, and Independent Learning Center; Citizens for Safe Energy, Gays Mills, Wisconsin; and the Rural Politics Discussion Group, formed by Stromquist to discuss political and social issues of interest to the rural community of southwestern Wisconsin. Strong, a resident of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, who came to Wisconsin in 1836; served as territorial surveyor and member of the territorial council, the first constitutional convention, and the state assembly in 1850 and 1856; and engaged in numerous and widespread business enterprises. His papers document his major business interests: land, railroads, lumbering, and mining. Political letters run throughout the collection, covering both Strong's participation in and his consultation with colleagues on sectional and party affairs, and legislation affecting business interests. Abstract: Records of the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam (SMC), a national coalition (1966-1973) formed to coordinate opposition to U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam among college and high school students. Best represented is the early period (1966-1968) when the national office was headquartered in New York City. Most complete are the files on anti-war groups in California (some correspondence from Bettina Aptheker is included here), Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, and New York. Most extensive international contacts involved Australia, Canada, France, and Vietnam. Other files concern the G.I. Press Service, an arm of SMC which organized anti-war sentiment in the military.

Abstract: Records of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee's (SNCC) Arkansas Project initiated in 1962 and of the Arkansas Summer Project begun in 1965, which were designed to combat segregation in public facilities and schools, to assist voter registration, and to raise the consciousness of black citizens. Included in the collection are records of the state headquarters in Little Rock, as well as the records of three local SNCC-sponsored citizens' groups: the Gould Citizens for Progress, the Pine Bluff Movement, and the St. Francis County Achievement Committee. Accessions of personal papers of Arkansas SNCC workers, including Laura Foner, William W. Hansen, Collin Minert, Vincent O'Connor, and Mitchell Zimmerman, have also been added to this collection. Both the collection as a whole, and the correspondence which comprises two-thirds of the collection, are most complete for the period 1961 through 1963. Abstract: Records of SDS, a national organization of students founded in 1960 that provided much of the force and direction for the New Left during the 1960's. Three boxes relate to SDS during its initial growth, 1958-1962, and contain national convention papers (including the Port Huron Statement); files on the League for Industrial Democracy and the Student League for Industrial Democracy from which SDS developed, projects, and related organizations; and correspondence of early leaders Al Haber and Tom Hayden. Thirty boxes date from the fall of 1962 to August 1965, the period when SDS still considered reform possible and when it maintained four separate national offices: the administrative national office and the offices of the Economic Research and Action Project, the Peace Research and Education Project, and the Political Education Project. National office records include voluminous correspondence of leaders such as Todd Gitlin, Paul Potter, and Clark Kissinger, reports, minutes, membership lists, pamphlets, registration forms, newsletters, clippings, and check stubs. These records relate to conventions and meetings, projects involving the anti-war movement and South Africa, publications, and intra-organization matters and relations with local chapters and other organizations. ERAP, which was headed by Rennie Davis, sought to organize a radical political movement among the poor. This section includes files on meetings, publications, and projects such as its extensive work among the poor in Chicago. PREP, which served as a clearinghouse and publisher for research on peace, disarmament, and foreign policy, is documented by correspondence, leaflets, manuscripts, newsletters, prospectuses, reports, and files on Boston PREP. One-half box of correspondence, memos, minutes, leaflets, prospectuses, and reports document PEP's efforts to push national electoral politics leftward in 1964. The third series consists of 23 boxes regarding the operations of the national office from late 1964 to 1970 when SDS became increasingly action-oriented, violent, and fractious, ultimately dividing into Progressive Labor, Weathermen, and Revolutionary Youth Movement. Included are correspondence (containing many references to Paul Booth and Bernadine Dohrn); minutes, notes, resolutions, and further correspondence of the national conventions and meetings; office files; project and subject files; reference files; and material concerning local chapters and related groups. Also part of the manuscript collection, but not available with the microfilm edition, are 24 tape recordings of SDS conferences, conventions, meetings, and speeches; the April 17, 1965, March on Washington; and the 1966 National Conference for New Politics Electoral Campaign Institute.

Abstract: Records of the Students for a Libertarian Society (SLS) and of its local chapters in Minneapolis, Minnesota (1979-1980), Madison, Wisconsin (1981-1984), and Evanston, Illinois (1983-1984) created and collected by an active member, David Beito. SLS is a group formed in April, 1979, to move college students toward the Libertarian Party movement, with which it is associated. Included are local and national SLS administrative records, correspondence, convention records, flyers, opinion papers, literature, and clippings primarily relating to anti-draft and anti-tax activities and to a proposed anti-pornography ordinance in Madison. Also present is some material on related anti-draft organizations in Minnesota with whom the SLS collaborated and some personal papers of Beito including campaign literature from his unsuccessful 1982 congressional campaign.

Abstract: Most of the collection is background materials, especially published literature, concerning Israel and Palestine, compiled by Joseph McCarty, a former officer of the SPJME, a UWM student organization. The only material dealing exclusively with the organization is a scrapbook containing a constitution, correspondence, flyers, letters, and memorabilia. The collection also contains audio reel recordings of a December 6, 1970 edition of a Milwaukee radio talk show, Milwaukee Talkie, hosted by Bob Schuster with guest Uri Davis, an Israeli pacifist and war resister.

Abstract: Records of a socialist journal whose editorial focus included the social and natural sciences, literature, and the arts. Over half of the collection is comprised of correspondence concerning content, advertising, exchanges, circulation, and other business and financial matters. The correspondence, which deals with content and which spans the journal's existence (1959-1967), relates to editorial policy in general and to the publication of individual articles. Included are extensive exchanges with authors such as Herbert Aptheker, Noam Chomsky, David Dellinger, W. E. B. DuBois, Philip Foner, Eugene Genovese, Thomas Hayden, Langston Hughes, Corliss Lamont, Staughton Lynd, Herbert Marcuse, C. Wright Mills, Sidney Peck, Howard Selsam, William A. Williams, C. Vann Woodward, and Maurice Zeitlin. For the period 1965-1967, there are manuscripts of articles and reviews. The remainder of the collection is comprised of fragmentary business and financial records.

Abstract: The Study Club of La Crosse (Wisconsin) was organized in 1928, under the name Thursday Study Club. In 1929, the group became affiliated with the Wisconsin Federation of Women’s Clubs. At biweekly meetings, club members took turns presenting programs of intellectual interest or inviting guest speakers to lecture. The name of the club was changed to Study Club of La Crosse in 1950, and the group was disbanded in 1983 due to the advanced age of its members and a lack of interest. Records of the Club, 1928-1983, include study club program announcements (1928-1983 with gaps), minutes (1962-1980) and several scrapbooks (1928-1978).

Materials include business correspondence and records (1922-1941), inventories, annual reports, tax records, employee records, and time books. Also included are records of a predecessor firm, Rubolt and Wolter Co.

Abstract: A small group of military and family correspondence and military reports and orders of General Samuel Sturgis, Civil War commander and Indian fighter, including letters from General George A. Custer, John Hay, and William H. Seward. One letter by Sturgis, June 12, 1870, recalls a conversation with Abraham Lincoln. Also contains biographical sketches of General Sturgis written by his wife, Jerusha Wilcox Sturgis, and of his daughter and his son-in-law, Ella Maria Sturgis and John Dinan Lawler, written by their daughter, Eleanor (Juty) Lawler Pillsbury. References are also made to John and Mary Sturgis, prominent Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, residents.
