Wis Mss WO
|
Part 1 (Wis Mss WO, Micro 923, Audio 1718A, PH 4975): Original Collection, 1858, 1907-1978, 199269.6 cubic feet (124 boxes and 20 records center cartons), 6 reels of microfilm (35 mm), 2 audio recordings, and 0.3 cubic feet of visual materials (1 archives box and 1 oversize folder) The Papers are primarily composed of correspondence between Derleth and hundreds of his friends, acquaintances, associates, and readers; and of manuscripts of many of Derleth's published and unpublished writings. The collection spans Derleth's entire adult life and reflects on all aspects of his writing career and his private life. Besides his will, however, there are few personal records. The collection is arranged in eight series: Correspondence, Manuscripts, Subject Files, Arkham House Business Papers, H.P. Lovecraft Materials, Published Materials, Miscellaneous Restricted Materials, and Correspondence-Additions. CORRESPONDENCE Nearly half of this collection consists of correspondence. Most of these letters are ones that Derleth received from family, friends, acquaintances, confidants, other authors, hopeful writers, publishers, readers, and fans; the rest are original Derleth letters addressed to Samuel Colehour, Edna Meudt, Barbara Pence, J. Vernon Shea, Mary Stiver, Inez Weaver, and his fiances, family, and relatives, and a smaller number of carbon copies of letters to other persons. All correspondence is arranged in one alphabetical file by writer's or recipient's name. Cross references between related files and notes explaining the name changes or subdivisions of certain publishing houses are interfiled in appropriate locations throughout the series. It should be noted that no H.P. Lovecraft correspondence is to be found in this series: instead, it has been grouped together with other Lovecraft documents under H.P. Lovecraft Materials. The contents list below notes only correspondents with 5 or more letters. Letters from the other correspondents are included in the proper alphabetical locations. The content of Derleth's correspondence ranges from discussions of business matters and inquiries about writing and publishing to intimate revelations of personal activities and billets-doux. In general, the letters tend to be friendly or personal and all are revealing of both the writer and the recipient. Almost all are lengthy and most are a part of a series of letters written over a period of months or years. Letters which deal primarily with business topics generally relate to the publication of Derleth's stories and novels or to Derleth's compilation and publication of other authors' works. More personal correspondence includes inquiries from readers, fans, and prospective writers who usually ask for Derleth's opinions and comment on his and other authors' works; series of letters from prominent writers, associates, and acquaintances who trade information with Derleth about their writing and publishing activities; and files of intimate correspondence between Derleth and his fiances, family, and close friends. Because Derleth was forthright, uninhibited, and never reluctant to express his satisfaction with his successes or acknowledge his short-comings, his letters paint an especially revealing portrait of Derleth the man and the writer. In his letters he generally discusses the background, progress, meaning, significance, and failings of his works and talks about his philosophy, opinions, acquaintances, present and past experiences, and public and private life. Derleth's openness seems to have inspired similar traits among his correspondents as well, and many of their letters therefore have additional importance for what they reveal about the characters and the minds of the individuals who wrote them. MANUSCRIPTS Notes, drafts, revisions, final copies, and proof sets for a number of Derleth's (and other persons') writings are included in this series. Most of these pieces are typewritten, a substantial number on the backs of routine correspondence and printed letters that Derleth received from individuals, businesses, and organizations. The manuscripts are arranged alphabetically, either by title or author, within five groups: Prose, Poetry, Notebooks, “Sac Prairie Journal,” and Miscellany. Prose consists of manuscripts of over three hundred of Derleth's short stories, novels, and articles. Since Derleth published in so many different magazines and sometimes wrote under pseudonyms, it is not clear whether all the short story manuscripts in this group were published: most were, however, as were all of the book length pieces. The few drafts that are dated cover the years between 1924 and 1970. Copies of the book reviews that Derleth wrote for the Madison (Wisconsin) Capital Times during the 1960s have been placed at the end of this group of manuscripts. Manuscripts of Derleth's poetry include collections arranged by Derleth, most of which were eventually published; individual finished poems, alphabetically organized by title or first line; and handwritten fragments of poems that Derleth never completed or else completed elsewhere. Manuscripts of poems written by other persons but edited or published by Derleth can be found under Manuscripts - Miscellany - Editorial Works. Additional drafts and fragments of Derleth's poetry are written in the backs of the 184 small pocket notebooks which make up the third group of manuscripts. Derleth carried these notebooks during his nature walks and recorded in them his observations as well as his thoughts and sudden inspirations. These booklets were the primary source for much of Derleth's nature and regional writings. Derleth often expanded on his notes in the “Sac Prairie Journal” --his personal record of the incidents that occurred in his private life and in his community. Derleth kept this journal faithfully, making daily entries between 1935 and 1970, and used substantial portions of it as the basis for Village Daybook, Wisconsin Country, Walden West, and other works. There is a twenty year restriction on access to parts of the journal. The rest of Derleth's manuscripts are grouped under Miscellany. Included are well organized research notes, clippings, and transcripts of original documents that Derleth used in writing his biographies of Zona Gale and Nelson Dewey; manuscripts that were sent to Derleth for inclusion in The Arkham House Sampler, Hawk and Whippoorwill, Fire and Sleet and Candlelight, New Poetry Out of Wisconsin, and the unpublished “Wisconsin Fiction,” together with pertinent correspondence; additional manuscripts sent to Derleth for criticism or for inclusion in his other anthologies and magazines; and photocopies of the dedications inscribed in the books which formed Derleth's personal library. Most of the dedications are short and inconsequential, however, and the books in which they were originally written have been separated from the collection. SUBJECT FILE Derleth kept a number of separate files of miscellaneous materials. These files, together with biographical and bibliographical materials extracted from the rest of the collection, comprise the Subject File. A microfilm copy of Derleth's collection of Clippings Concerning Comics forms the largest part of this series. Those clippings that relate to a specific author or comic strip are arranged alphabetically by the author's name; the rest of the clippings concern several authors or comics in general and are arranged chronologically. The majority of the clippings are from Editor and Publisher magazine. There are also a number of original comic strips clipped from old newspapers, some dating back to the first decade of this century and one to the 1850s. Derleth's collection of comics has been separated from the collection and placed in the Iconographic Collection of the State Historical Society. Other materials in the Subject File include a copy of Derleth's will; very early manuscript fragments; reviews of Derleth books; letters and speeches by Derleth about community affairs; copy for the dust jackets of various Derleth and Arkham House books; and clippings and biographical information about Derleth. ARKHAM HOUSE BUSINESS PAPERS Bills, customer orders, copies of invoices, purchase orders, and some correspondence -- all related to the distribution and sale of Arkham House publications -- are arranged chronologically by month within this series. Because Arkham House was not an incorporated business and was never thought of as a money-making concern, Derleth did not compile annual reports or keep precise financial records. These business papers are therefore the only records of Arkham House's operations and sales. Unfortunately, most of the pre-1963 materials were destroyed when this collection was originally processed, so substantially complete records survive only for the years between 1963 and 1970. Customer orders that were part of personal letters are filed in the Correspondence series, as is most of Derleth's correspondence with authors, printers, and distributors about matters relating to the acceptance, printing, and sale of Arkham House volumes. Additional related correspondence may be found under Manuscripts-Miscellany-Editorial Works. H.P. LOVECRAFT MATERIALS Derleth corresponded with H.P. Lovecraft and completed, edited, and published many of Lovecraft's works. Derleth therefore amassed a considerable collection of Lovecraft letters, manuscripts, and published works, all of which have been brought together in this series. In addition, there are two subject folders containing Lovecraft biographies and bibliographies. All of Lovecraft's many, lengthy letters to Derleth are included in this series, as are the few extant Derleth replies. There is also a file, arranged alphabetically by recipient, of Lovecraft letters addressed to third parties. Most of this correspondence is on microfilm and the rest has been copied: special permission must be obtained if one wishes to use the original Lovecraft letters. The manuscripts in this series include drafts and proof sets of Lovecraft works, most of which were prepared for publication by Derleth after Lovecraft's death. They are dated 1915-1967 and are arranged alphabetically by title. A folder of individual Lovecraft poems is filed under the title “Poetry.” Published materials include photocopies of magazine stories, works published while Lovecraft was alive, and works compiled, written, or published by Derleth after Lovecraft's death. They range in date from 1919 to 1963 and are also arranged alphabetically by title. Pieces about Lovecraft can be found: elsewhere in the collection, particularly under Manuscripts - Prose, and Manuscripts - Miscellany - Manuscripts By Other Authors. PUBLISHED MATERIALS The published versions of a number of Derleth's works are to be found in the periodicals and volumes which comprise this series. The periodicals include several issues of 318 different magazines and journals which each contain one or more pieces by Derleth. In some instances Derleth wrote under a pseudonym. There are also 32 volumes of works by Derleth and 29 volumes of other persons' works that were published by Arkham House.
: In 2010 the following periodicals listed in the PUBLISHED MATERIALS series were missing: Destiny, 1951-1952; Dragon-Fly, circa 1936; Fantastic Worlds, Summer 1952; Fantasy Fan, 1933-1935; Gargoyle, 1950; Household, April 1942; Leaves, Summer 1937; and Phantagraph, March-April 1937.
RESTRICTED MATERIALS Box 139 contains six packages of material to which access to package 4-6 are restricted. Details are listed in the Administrative/Restriction Information section. CORRESPONDENCE-ADDITIONS Letters written by Derleth to various individuals and Charles Scribner's and Sons gathered by the donor from numerous sources.
