Appendix A: Thwaites Collection Nitrate Negatives

The negatives and prints are listed chronologically, an order established by referring to Thwaites's carefully assembled photographic albums and to earlier numbering systems on the negatives and prints. With some exceptions, the negatives and unmounted prints processed by Kodak from 1891 to 1905 bear a penciled number written by a Kodak employee when the individual exposures were cut, so as to identify them with the original roll. For some of these rolls, an additional number has been added, probably by Reuben Gold Thwaites, to designate individual exposures. Thus 20-42 and 21-42 are consecutive exposures on roll 42 from 1891. Thwaites numbered other photographs as he captioned them in the album, a practice that has been extended to previously unnumbered album prints to establish the most likely chronological order for photographs not otherwise dated. These original roll and exposure numbers are useful but cumbersome, and so they have been retained as the last entry in the table's DESCRIPTION column, and thick lines have been added to the table indicating the change of rolls. The last column contains new negative numbers, all of which begin with the prefix (T53).

Descriptions of the photographs come from Thwaites's album captions and notes on the backs of prints and negative envelopes. Additional information, comments, and descriptions provided by this cataloger appear in right angle brackets.

All negatives have been given dates. When the month and day are not given (for example, 00/00/1891), the negative's place in the chronology is a conjecture based on similar negatives with authoritative dates.

Recently found negatives have numbers through (T53)803 but are located in their chronological places in this list.
