Otis Hoyt Papers, 1792-1921

Biography/History

Dr. Otis Hoyt was born in Sandwich, New Hampshire, December 3, 1812 and died in Hudson, Wisconsin, November 12, 1885. He graduated from Dartmouth College and from Jefferson College in Philadelphia, and practiced medicine in Mason, New Hampshire and Framingham, Massachusetts. In 1846 he entered the army as surgeon for the Mexican War.

In 1849, Dr. Hoyt came to St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin where he continued his practice of medicine and moved to Hudson, Wisconsin, in 1852. The same year he was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly.

In 1862 he entered army service again as surgeon of the 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, but was on detached service most of the time. For a while he had charge of the hospital at Camp Randall and later was medical director at Bowling Green and Louisville, Kentucky.

Dr. Hoyt also engaged at various times in real estate and railroad operations.
