Gilbert Miller Scripts, 1929-1958

Biography/History

Gilbert Heron Miller, a theatrical producer, was born July 3, 1884, in New York City. From 1910 to 1915 he managed all of the productions given by his father, the famous actor-manager Henry Miller.

In 1921 Miller succeeded Alf Hayman as vice-president of Charles Frohman, Inc., a post he held until 1932. He managed the St. James's and Savoy theatres in London, and was an executive of Famous-Players Lasky Corporation.

From 1956 to 1958 Miller produced four plays: The Reluctant Debutante by William Douglas Home, Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, The Rope Dancers by Morton Wishengrad, and The Sleeping Prince by Terence Rattigan.

He has presented on the Broadway and London stage, as both producer and director, over 200 plays, among them such successes as Victoria Regina, Journey's End, The Late Christopher Bean, The Cocktail Party, and Gigi. His production of Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution was a sensational hit in London's West End in 1952 and in New York in 1954 to 1956, where it ran for 645 performances.

Miller is credited with introducing to Americans such notable English stars as Basil Rathbone, Charles Laughton, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Robert Morley, and Alec Guinness.
