Wisconsin. Radioactive Waste Review Board: Records, 1977-1995

Biography/History

The Radioactive Waste Review Board was created by the Wisconsin State Legislature (statutory reference 15.915(4) and 36.50), in 1981 in response to the U.S. Department of Energy's activities in granite states. The board was responsible for representing the state of Wisconsin in all activities with the Department of Energy and was authorized to enter into written agreements covering siting activities. The board consisted of ten members: four governor's appointees, one member from the Senate, one from the Assembly, public representatives appointed by each of the above, as well as the chairs of the board's Policy Advisory Council and the Technical Advisory Council. The Technical Advisory Council consisted of representatives of the Department of Health and Social Services, the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Transportation, the state geologist, the Attorney General, Department of Administration, the Division of Emergency Government, the Division of State Energy, chairperson of the Public Service Commission, and the president of the University of Wisconsin System. The Nuclear Waste Review Board was advised by several special councils and committees. The Technical Advisory Council was responsible for advising the board on technical matters relating to disposal and other nuclear waste siting issues. The Policy Advisory Council consisted of members appointed by the Radioactive Waste Review Board and included representatives of local government, tribal governing bodies, and the general public. It was responsible for advising the board on policy matters. The board ceased to exist after 1996, and its responsibilities were assumed by the Division of Energy and Inter-governmental Relations.
