Under the Railroad Commission and Public Service Commission, railroad case files were
assigned the prefixes R, 2R, and 2SR and were filed in a single numerical sequence. Prefix
2SR indicates street railways; prior to 1931 street railways were given R numbers. 2SRs are
interfiled with Rs. Beginning in June 1975, a new file numbering system was adopted. Files
now receive a three-part number. A four digit, 9000 number prefix indicates the railroad
involved. It is followed by a two letter case type designator. The final portion is a
sequential, unique case number. 9040 RX-23 is typical of such numbers, designating the
twenty-third case involving the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. A separate set of unique
case numbers is assigned to general cases and to each railroad, creating thirty-six filing
sequences. The case type designator has no filing significance. Appendix A provides a key to
these docketing codes.
