Scope and Content Note

About the Lake City Guards of Madison there are minutes of meetings taken by Reuben Gold Thwaites as secretary and printed extracts from the minutes, clippings about prize drills and guard inspection, records of the financial secretary, and a record of dues paid. Also included is a recollection by Francis A. Lamb of the participation of the Guard in the so-called “Sawdust War” in Eau Claire in 1881.

Troop A of the First Cavalry Regiment is documented by a letterbook of Captain R. W. Mueller relating to transportation, ordnance and quartermaster stores, and financial allowances to cover expenses and by a roll book, muster book, treasurer's book, and cash books.

The First Infantry Regiment, also headquartered in Milwaukee, is represented by general and special orders and circulars; and records of small arms practice.

About Company A of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, headquartered in Neillsville, there are descriptive and clothing books, an order book, and a guard record. For each member of the unit, the descriptive books list name, rank, age, physical description, birthplace, occupation, and enlistment data, and information on the name of the nearest relative.
