C.B. Cox Company Mill Records, 1872-1911

Scope and Content Note

The C.B. Cox Company mill records consist of two volumes and two folders which came into the possession of Fred Chinnock and were used by him for his personal accounts.

A complete listing of the contents of both volumes is given below. The personal household expense accounts in volume one were for Fred Chinnock, a millwright, who lived in Colfax and River Falls, Wisconsin. A separate folder of miscellaneous, unorganized receipts and bills in Fred Chinnock's name, covers additional years and concerns his personal and business expenditures in the River Falls area.

Volume two may have served as a guide-book for the proprietors of the Junction Mill. The listing of transit points may have assisted them in choosing terminal points and re-shipment locations for flour in several midwestern states. The “scoring” system used---that of giving each transit point one or more alphabetical ratings---has not been deciphered.

The second folder contains several copies of a map of the mill, showing the location and size of the buildings and also giving the type of machinery used in the milling operations, as well as the mill's daily capacity. This map dates from the last two decades of the nineteenth century.
