Part 1 (Mss 1074, Audio 1543A, PH 6658, AD 565): Original Collection, 1848-1994 (bulk 1930-1979)33.4 cubic feet (25 record center cartons, 4 archives boxes, 10 flat boxes, and 12 card file boxes), 16 audio recordings, 1 film (16 mm), 3.7 cubic feet of photographs (9 archives boxes and 1 oversize folder) and 0.2 cubic feet of negatives (1 card box) The Ben Bergor Papers document three members of Madison's Goldenberger family: Ben Bergor, the performer; his sister Olivia Monona, an opera singer; and their father Benedict Goldenberger. The papers of each member of the family are a separate series in the collection: BEN BERGOR PAPERS, OLIVIA MONONA PAPERS and BENEDICT GOLDENBERGER PAPERS. In addition to the preceding series: there is a small series of GENEALOGICAL PAPERS primarily collected by historian John O. Holzhueter, Bergor's son-in-law; VISUAL MATERIALS documenting Ben Bergor, Olivia Monona, Bergor's theatrical agency, and the Goldenberger and Moessner families; and AUDIO RECORDINGS. The professional careers of Bergor and his sister are both well covered in the manuscript papers, although there are some notable gaps. For Bergor, the papers are professional rather than personal, whereas Monona's papers include a long run of her diaries. Benedict Goldenberger's papers are entirely personal in content. In addition to the manuscript papers, the Bergor family donated many artifacts to the Wisconsin Historical Society Museum. The BEN BERGOR PAPERS is the largest portion of the collection. His papers divide into general correspondence, which is chronologically arranged; subject files, which are alphabetically arranged; and a library of reference material about humor and public speaking. The early correspondence is primarily incoming, and limited during the 1920s. There is little information here about Bergor's early days on the vaudeville circuit. A few letters from Herb Willett during the 1920s concern their song writing team. After 1927, when Bergor toured with Mel Reilly and the Curtis Comedy Company, the correspondence becomes more voluminous. Thereafter, there are numerous exchanges with individual magicians and magic dealers such as Percy Abbott, Joe Berg, Dave Coleman, and L.L. Ireland. As a result of his leadership in the Houdini Club of Wisconsin, there are also letters to and from amateur and semi-professional magicians in Wisconsin such as R.C. Finkle and M.F. Zens. The exchanges with the magicians and magic dealers, which are a highlight of the collection, often discuss tricks, bookings, and general conditions of the entertainment business, as well as personal matters. The general correspondence also reflects Bergor's gradual shift from performer to licensed entertainment booking agent during the 1930s and 1940s. The correspondence from this period consists of exchanges with talent, employers, and other agents documenting the way in which a small Midwestern entertainment agency operated. On many occasions Bergor acted as the show's producer, and sometimes he appeared as the master of ceremonies. Additional correspondence for the Wisconsin organizations for which he frequently booked entertainment, such as the Wisconsin Road Builders Association, the Wisconsin Conference of School Safety Patrols, and various veterans' homes and hospitals, as well as the Eastern Iowa Light and Power Cooperative can be found in the Subject files. During the 1950s Bergor renewed his song writing career, although with little success, and there is correspondence about that effort. A more successful career shift concerns his humorous writing. Bergor's humorous remarks, which had always been an important part of his act, were published in the Madison newspapers. During the 1960s he was a contributor of humorous quips to national magazines such as Quote, and to Earl Wilson's column in the New York Post. This is reflected in correspondence with these editors. The alphabetically-arranged subject files cover virtually the full range of Bergor's diverse career, but, like the general correspondence, only limited material dates from the vaudeville era of the 1920s and 1930s. Despite this chronological gap, there is good documentation about magic, even including notes and instructions for a few of Bergor's tricks and draft and printed advertising. Other files contain the mailings received from a host of magic dealers; individual magicians' brochures and business cards, and scattered records of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the Society of American Magicians, the Wisconsin Houdini Club, and other organizations in which he was active. The series also includes the Houdini Award album. Bergor's papers also contain many of his theatrical booking agency records. Included are business ledgers that document the appearances of each client, their earnings, and Bergor's fees. There are also alphabetically-arranged brochures, some draft advertising written by Bergor, performance programs, and information on how Bergor kept track of each entertainer's availability and particular talents. There is also an extensive file of publicity stills in the separate VISUAL MATERIALS series. Correspondence, contracts, and working files document shows he produced for Wisconsin organizations such as the Wisconsin Road Builders Association, the Wisconsin Conference of School Safety Patrols, various veterans homes and hospitals; the Eastern Iowa Light and Power Cooperative; and as sports shows during the 1940s and 1950s. The writings section of the subject files contains material in a variety of genres, including files of “one-liners” and “patter” that are seldom thought of as a literary form, as well as material that is so incomplete and indecipherable as to disguise the intended product. Among the published items are “Proverbs and a Cash Box,” a story from Mystery Magazine published in 1924; Highlight Magic, a booklet written in 1941; and many “Ben Bergor Says” quips published in the Wisconsin State Journal, the Capital Times, and elsewhere. Bergor's speeches and remarks are incomplete and fragmentary, more often resembling notes rather than polished manuscripts. Even his best known speech, “Apathy,” is represented only by unfinished drafts. Bergor's poor handwriting and casual identification makes many items difficult to read and understand. A similar problem with insufficient labeling and poor handwriting plagues the draft scores, melodies, and lyrics in the music subject files. Very little here, except for his religious work, represents polished compositions. Bergor was, nevertheless, a talented musician, and several tape recordings, thought to be Bergor playing the piano, hint at this as found in the AUDIO RECORDINGS series. The final subseries in the BEN BERGOR PAPERS is a library of humor, jokes, and cartoons books and magazines that he mined for ideas for his career as a public speaker, master of ceremonies, and humorist. The library has been retained in the archival collection because it is out of scope for the SHSW Library and the University Library, because it includes some of Bergor's published humor, and because many items bear his notations. More mainstream publications concerning public speaking have been transferred to University of Wisconsin-Madison's Memorial Library. Together, the library presents a representative sample of mid-20th century humor. Highlights include Charley Jones' Laugh Book, Gags, 1000 Jokes, and Quote. Magic books, which probably once made up a substantial part of Bergor's reference library, were not received by the Archives. The OLIVIA MONONA PAPERS present a rare, although incomplete, picture of life in an opera company. Documenting two of the most important opera companies, her perspective was unique because she was not a featured singer. Her diaries span almost her entire professional career. Although the entries are relatively brief, her handwriting is neat and easily read. Her correspondence primarily consists of letters and postcards received. Although not fully identified, many of her correspondents are clearly friends from the opera world. Miss Monona trimmed some of her incoming correspondence for an unknown purpose, and when otherwise unidentified, these letter fragments have been left together as she stored them. Her alphabetical subject files contain publications, programs, notes, and clippings about the Chicago Grand Opera, as well as lists of chorus members and copies of her contracts. Similar, but fewer documents refer to her career with the Met. The Chicago files include a notebook that may have belonged to conductor Attico Bernabini. Also part of her papers are an early career scrapbook; ephemera relating to recreational travel; and reminiscent articles about Gutzon Borglum, Luther Burbank, Dale Carnegie, Enrico Caruso, and Robert La Follette. The BENEDICT GOLDENBERGER PAPERS are a small group of loose letterbook pages, dated 1880, that concern his first marriage, and family letters concerning his son Ivanhoe and the disposition of Washington State property; and his diaries. The journal-like entries in his diary as a student at the University of Wisconsin are more extensive, but short, incomplete diaries span his adult life. Also included is a volume of University Press during the years when this student newspaper was edited by Robert M. La Follette. The articles written by Goldenberger are marked. The GENEALOGICAL PAPERS primarily collected by historian John O. Holzhueter, Bergor's son-in-law, is a small group of documents consisting of Holzhueter's correspondence regarding the Goldenberger, Moessner, Madden and Topel families; a few 19th century documents; and some clippings regarding various family members. The VISUAL MATERIALS series consist of portraits, snapshots of Bergor performing, publicity stills of magicians and other entertainers that Bergor booked, and portraits and snapshots of Olivia Monona and chorus members of the Chicago Grand Opera. The publicity stills are filed alphabetically by name or by talent when unidentified. There is a separate alphabetical file for magicians. Unlike the agency photos which date from the 1940s through the 1960s, there are portraits of magicians dating from as early as the 1920s. Olivia Monona's photographs include identified and unidentified snapshots, many of which document chorus members of the Chicago Grand Opera during the 1920s. There are also portraits of the Goldenberger and Moessner families. The film is the brief televised broadcast at WMAQ of Bergor performing a sleight of hand card trick in 1930. Television equipment and a family watching a television are also seen. The AUDIO RECORDINGS series consists of auditions; radio broadcasts of skits, tricks, satires, etc.; family piano and opera performances; sound effects; and performances of “My Heart Went Boom,” a composition by Bergor. Some of these recordings are also listed in amongst the paper portion of the collection.
