Mss 30
|
Part 1 (Mss 30): Original Collection, 1955-19600.8 cubic feet (2 archives boxes) This small collection presented by Philleo Nash is almost entirely related to the presidential campaign of 1956. Mr. Nash had been elected chairman of the Wisconsin State Democratic Committee in 1955, and was a member of the Wisconsin delegation to the Democratic convention in Chicago in August of 1956. Philleo Nash supported the candidacy of Averell Harriman for nomination as President at the convention; but after Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver became the standard bearers he worked on their behalf in the state of Wisconsin. Correspondence and itineraries that passed through his hands, especially in the fall of 1956, are filed in the first folder of Box 1. The other folders in the box chiefly contain mimeographed speeches of the candidates, press releases, and literature. The small folder concerning Mr. Nash himself includes a few manuscripts relating to his election as state Democratic chairman in 1955, his election as Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin in 1958, and his unsuccessful race for reelection in 1960; and clippings referring to Nash in the 1956 presidential campaign. Box 2 contains three scrapbooks composed of news articles, editorials, and cartoons taken from the newspapers during the campaign of 1956; and a collection of mounted campaign literature, from single flyers to pamphlets.
