George Cook Diaries, 1862-1865

Biography/History

George Cook was a farmer and Civil War soldier. A resident of Menomonee, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, Cook enlisted as a private in Company A, 28th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1862 under Captain J. A. Williams for a period of three years. The company was mustered on October 13, 1862 in Milwaukee by J. M. Growbridge and left for Columbus, Kentucky, on December 20, 1862. When the 28th Regiment was stationed at St. Charles, Rockport, and then Pine Bluff, Arkansas, it participated in numerous campaigns in 1863 including the White River Expedition, the Yazoo Expedition, the Battle of Helena, Arkansas, and the Little Rock Expedition. In 1864 the Regiment was sent to Alabama and was involved in the Battle of Mount Elba and Mobile Point. It entered Mobile, Alabama, on April 12, 1865. Prior to being mustered out, the Regiment also served in Texas. Mustering out occurred in Texas on August 23, 1865 and George Cook was discharged in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 22, 1865.
