Lee Weiss Papers, 1958-2009

Biography/History

Lee Weiss is a nationally-known and acclaimed water colorist whose impressionistic paintings usually focus on small aspects of nature. Born Elyse Crouse in Inglewood, California in 1928, Mrs. Weiss worked as an interior decorator before turning to painting as her career. Her first professional exhibit was in 1959. In 1962, she moved with her husband, economics professor Leonard Weiss, to Madison, Wisconsin, where a lack of local galleries forced her to seek outlets in Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. During the 1970s, her style evolved towards larger pictures focusing on smaller and smaller subjects. Mrs. Weiss has received many awards and other recognitions and her work has been purchased by many public and private collectors.
