McCormick Harvesting Machine Company Letterpress Copy Books, 1856-1902

Scope and Content Note

The original order of the volumes has been lost. Here they are arranged chronologically. Most are preceded by an internal alphabetical index to correspondents, consisting of individuals and organizations. Each reel of microfilm includes one complete volume. Indexes to the volumes (8 cubic feet) have been retained in original form after filming.

While the vast majority of the volumes contain general office correspondence, after 1876 a few scattered volumes within the chronological arrangement relate to specific departments or functions. These pertain to machine prices, rake orders, factory supplies, and invoices for repairs and are identified in a special reel list labelled Appendix A at the end of the register. Other volumes contain the correspondence of a particular company official and these too are noted in Appendix A.
